I Don't Belong

I don’t belong
to your world of smoke and steel.
To endless wars and fallen forests;
Pollution devouring anything on its path
and corruption lurking in every corner.

I roam this place of torment,
looking for a way home.
I haunt old antique shops,
praying that I find something
to take me far away.

An old mirror, a loose coin;
A dragon figurine or a brass ring.
I step into wardrobes
and visit abandoned homes,
searching, begging for a gateway.

I jump down rabbit holes
and dance in fairy rings.
My fingers turn dusty pages,
looking for a sign, a spell, a map.
I never find anything.

I look up at the sky
and plead with a broken voice
for wings to sprout from my back
and carry me far, far away
to where I truly belong;

To a different reality,
where dragons rule the skies;
their scales more beautiful
than planes could ever be.
Your world has no dragons.

I dream of a place where
elves enchant me with music
more beautiful than anything you’ll ever hear,
and dwarves tell the best stories
or mythical creatures far beyond your imagination.

I don’t belong here,
but far beyond the horizon
where magic makes life worth living
and anyone can be a hero.
Even me.

So I continue to roam
your black-and-white world;
I continue my search for
that one door, spell or trinket
to at last take me home.

Don’t weep for me, please.
Just turn your head and keep walking.
Ignore the ghost of a girl
who haunts this grey Purgatory,
looking for something that isn’t there.

Hi!

I really love your use of imagery and detail in this poem. It makes it fun to read and follow along with, and it creates a strong visual in my mind. My favorite part is

"I roam this place of torment,
looking for a way home.
I haunt old antique shops,
praying that I find something
to take me far away."

The part reminded me of Narnia for some reason and I really liked that. Also, it reminded me of a person who has a slightly old soul, like they're trying to go back in time to their youth and away from all the craziness of this modern era.

You're work is truly beautiful, and you are incredibly talented. Can't wait to read more of your work in the future!

Hello!

I jump down rabbit holes
and dance in fairy rings.
My fingers turn dusty pages,
looking for a sign, a spell, a map.

My favorite section ^

Oh gosh, I really love this poem! A good book really can take you far away! At first, I thought this sounded a bit like a spirit or an immortal person trying to escape life or something. But wow! You are so creative and convey things so vividly.

Please, you must keep writing! :D

I like this more than you can divine. Okay, you probably know exactly how much I like it. To such an extent that it can't even be measured because it's over the head of my heart... and on it flies.

Hello EldrichArchivist, dachsie here for a quick review.
I enjoyed reading this poem because I could really connect with it. You used great vocabulary and punctuated the stanzas well. I especially liked the line about how in books anyone can be a hero, but that isn't true in the real world. I think that since the 'average person becomes the chosen one' theme in books is so common, this is definitely a relatable line.
I have a couple critiques that you can choose whether you want to change or not, depending on if you think it works. They aren't spelling or grammar issues, so it's your choice.

To a different reality,
where dragons rule the skies;

The poem is describing the stories very subtly, without going and saying outright that it's subject is books. This line felt to me like it broke the consistency of describing the stories.

My second suggestion is to maybe not use as many semicolons. In some places, the poem would flow better if there was a comma there instead.

That's all I have for the review. I look forward to reading more of your poetry!
