"Alexander?" I blurted out, trying not to think of how black was his color. My stomach rumbled again as my cake belly swelled ominously beneath my dress. He smiled.
"Yeah, Mari?" He smirked, surveying my dress. Why had I eaten a ginormous cake, why oh why?!?
"W-won't you step inside?" I asked, trying to maintain some dignity as he nodded and followed me inside the living room.
Uh-oh.
The Kavanagh living room is a strange structure, halfway between compact and elegant. Most of the living room is occupied by an ornate, but medium sized dining table and its 6 chairs. Then we have that huge mirrored console on which you could see thousands and thousands of little glass people and animals, framed photographs of family and friends, and a stack of dusty albums, the topmost of which happens to be my baby album which is paraded around whenever someone visits. The remaining half of the living room is occupied by our wall mounted flat screen, a white coffee table and the couches.
The couches were problematic from the moment we bought them. Of course, at first my mother didn't even consider that they were white because the couches, with their gold colored embellishments were elegant, and occupied little space, much to dad's pleasure. After we came home, and the thrill of having bought new couches passed, mom suddenly realized.
The couches were white.
So began the adventures of scrubbing them down whenever there was a prospect of a visitor coming over. People suggested getting the fabric changed, but mom was not to part with her elegant embellishments. So she put up with that until she stopped caring 6 months ago, when she saw her best friend's couches with blue finger paint smeared over them.
However, this was not the only problem. You see, they were also small. We had a total of 3 love seats arranged around the television. Two of which were occupied by the Kanes and my parents, deep in conversation, and the other, by a solitary Kane.
I steeled myself and went over to sit near him. He had an incredibly intoxicating perfume. He also smelled like soap and shaving gel, like, well, a man. I tried not to swoon as I noticed him surveying my dress once more, a hint of a smile on his lips.
I looked back at him, and he grinned.
"I was trying to tell you I'd be seeing you, but you didn't listen to me, Raisin."
RAISIN! Had he called me a raisin? Gosh darn my parents and their stupid girl names book.
"My name is Roisin." I breathed, trying my best not to slap him in the face.
"Fine, Raisin," he snickered "Anyways, want me to continue with what I was telling you earlier today?"
I felt a blush creep into my cheeks, flooding them with color.
"Here?" I blurted in shock. He positively beamed.
"Not necessarily." He said and pulled out his phone, refusing to focus on me for more than two seconds when I poked him.
I spent the rest of the evening wondering what he meant as I conversed with his parents who seemed to know quite a bit about me. Had he told them? Probably not, it was probably my parents, or so I hoped.
After a while, my bun started to hurt my head and I left the room to put my bun down and brush my hair. When I came back, plates were set out with spring rolls, muffins and mini tarts surrounding them.
"Oh, Marigold, here you are. Could you go over to Target and grab a few bottles of drinks? We forgot to buy them on the way."
I nodded and walked over to the door.
"Hold on, Mrs. Kavanagh. It's late. I think I should go out with her." Alexander said, standing up and straightening his tie. That tie. I wanted to do things to it.
Like take it off.
I shook my head. This was still a trick.
My father, on the other hand was nodding.
"Alright, Lex. Here's a 10, get ice-cream or something for yourselves on the way back."
Ice-cream. I was surprised I wasn't vomiting already. I sighed and waited for him at the door, then walked a few steps ahead of him.
"Hey, Marigold?" He ventured.
"Yeah?" I asked, glancing back at him. He caught up to me.
"Do you really think I'm playing with you?"
"Yep." Monosyllabic replies helped me not to make gushy noises.
"Why?"
"For starters, you showed up at my door with people who'd been tormenting me all summer."
"Well, I thought that was a great way to get your attention. I did send them away."
"Yeah right."
"Ma-rigold..."
The way he said my name. Like a prayer. Like something so holy and beautiful, almost too good to be spoken by mere mortals. I shuddered.
"What is it?"
"I'm sorry. I should have thought better."
"You should have."
I quickened my pace once more, but he grabbed my hand. MY HAND! Millions of nerve endings rushed to action and my hand tingled and throbbed amazingly. I couldn't pull away.
"What ar-.." I tried to ask, but he interrupted me.
"Marigold, I've had my eyes on you since the start of tenth grade. We were in different classes mostly, you took social sciences mostly, and I took the sciences. But I saw you even though you didn't see me. I was so amazed by how beautiful you were, by how you carried yourself, your talents, how confident you were. I tried to get to you, but I couldn't. I didn't even go for the plethora of girls pushing their phone numbers through my locker. I wanted, no, needed you. I still do." he whispered, anguished and twitchy, not even looking into my eyes, but gripping my hand tightly.
I tried once more to be angry and confused, but all my common sense had been swept to the back of my mind. the empty recesses of my mind echoed;
"Need you... Need you... Need you..."
I couldn't even get a coherent reply out, just a choked, shaky gasp.
He finally looked up at me, with eyes so desperate and almost ashamed that I gripped back at his hand. He beamed at me with a toothy smile. He had a slight gap between his front teeth.
"Marigold. Be mine. I realize this isn't a very nice place to ask you, I mean, we're standing under a streetlight at night, but I have to know. I know I seem suspicious and, well, like a jerk to you, and I'm sorry, but please, just please overlook it..."
I stared back at him. Mockery be damned, I'd take it for the briefest company of this guy. Maybe, just maybe, he might not even be lying to me.
I nodded and he took me into his arms. I couldn't even suck my receding cake belly in as I breathed him in and clung to his chest.
Then we went over to the market, hand in hand, and back home with drinks and lemon flavored ice lollies, our favourite.

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
Hello! Silverberry here for another review! And, as always, I'm reviewing this as I write so personal thoughts will be at the end.
They've met like twice, right? I understand what he's trying to say, and it's very cute, but it is also a little creepy the way he worded it, especially considering that Marigold hadn't even known who he was.Okay so I'm done reading, and I didn't really find any grammatical errors or anything like that so that's good! Personally, I believe that the relationship was a little rushed and that you could've spent more time going over every detail that was happening when he was asking him out and whatnot to make it more suspenseful and to keep the readers on edge. Another thing, it seemed a little strange that Marigold would go out with this dude considering that she JUST met him. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but I'm a little skeptical.
On a brighter note, I really like Lex's character and his attitude and his overall sweetness and how much it contrasts with marigold's sassy and blunt attitude in the story, I think their personalities go well together so far. Of course, this is because so far I know the very general traits of these characters. My advice is to imbed more of Marigold's characteristics in the setting and in the way she moves and speaks. So far you do well in showing her character, but its more blunt than deep and meaningful.
Another thing, I think your description of the living room was a little out of place. It was very nice and detailed and it was a very nice introduction to the setting, but it make the rest of the chapter seem a bit rushed, especially since it was a shorter one. Maybe go back and add more of this scrutiny throughout the entire chapter? Especially when it comes to Mari's and Lex's character traits, which I talked about earlier.
This wasn't exactly my favorite chapter, for it could use some improvement. Overall I am liking this story, and I'm curious on what will happen, but I think if you have more detail and take more time in perfecting every part (even the fillers) it will be much better. This chapter was a little rushed, but you can still improve it, and I hope you find my advice to be helpful. Keep writing and I'll keep reading!
Hey there Des. Just sticking with Des this time because I'm on mobile at the moment. Anyways I'm here on this wonderful review day to leave some great comments on your story.
Note: I have not read any of the previous chapters so hopefully that doesn't hinder this review too much.
The description of the living room was a bit much for me because it just seemed so out of place. It's like right off the main character is icing a narrative of the living and dining room. You did help the presentation of this with the introduction of the couch story. I found this slightly amusing but it wasn't strong enough to counter act the previous paragraph.
Just a quick question, but why did you leave such a lengthy description of the layout? Does it okay some significance later on or something?
The caps were another thing that sort of threw me off. I know the caps are used for emphasis but I prefer italics. You still get all the attention without getting people mad about the screaming. Or bold if you prefer that sort of attention grabber.
The story overall too me just seems a touch cliche too me. Here's the girl who likes this guy but he doesn't really know she exists or so she thinks. But he's really in love with her and then it all magically works out. Don't you dare let either of them die. I don't mean to be mean but the story is just a reworked plot that's no more exciting than it was the last thousand times.
I've only read this one chapter but I haven't seen anything that has really stuck out to me. Well anything that stuck out in the story and made it exciting and interesting. The main character is somewhat funny but I can't find anyway to relate to her. In my own life, I'm a pretty humorous person but her line of humor doesn't really line up with my own.
I guess my dislike for the story is because I can not relate to any of the characters. The main character seems like a goody two shoes to me and I can't relate to that at all. Obviously I can't relate to the boyfriend. And then none of the other characters were introduced much so I'm left with no one to relate to.
As far as grammar, spelling and typos go, the story is clean. Yay! You get one point towards how much I like the story.
*assigned for lines for grammar and spelling so just pretend that's what this is*
Well I guess I don't have many more comments on your story. Sorry if this wasn't much help to you but I thought my opinions on a couple of things would help.
Happy Review Day!

Hello, there! Anna Rae here to do a review
))
And I should probably say that I haven't read any of the previous chapters to this, so my apologies if I say something wrong or mess up a character, etc. Sorry in advance.
I love how she talks about her cake belly. I don't know if she's overweight in previous chapters or self concious about it or just ate cake but I feel like a "cake belly" is something everyone can relate to. Like I haven't even eaten cake but I got a cake belly. It does a good job of pulling the reader in.
Lol so I'm writing this review AS I read instead of AFTER bc that's how I roll and I just read that she just ate a huge cake so I get it. Nice nice, I like cake too, girl. No regrets.
Ok I love your descriptions. It's perfect - a lot without being too much. I could see the whole living room like a picture. However, I think the whole aspect of going on and on about how the couches were white got to be a little tenuous. I think you could do without all of that. Maybe a brief mention of the problematic color but that's it. The fact that they're small couches is fine and makes sense to the chapter, though.
I laughed when he called her Raisin, but the whole "RAISIN!" thing kinda stopped my laugh because it is honestly a pet peeve of mine to see capitol letters used to exclaim something. I dont' know, it just looks so unprofessional. My suggestionL italisize it instead of capitolizing it. Same effect, just looks better.
And ooh that boy sounds really hot, just saying.
And ooh your main character is funny. I love her already and it's been one random chapter of reading.
"MY HAND!" I repeat my commend about capitolization. You can choose to ignore it if you'd like but that's just my opinion
And all was going good throughout his confession of love and then he said "I mean, we're standin gunder a streetlight" and all I could think was "whoa, how'd they get there????" So describe a little more of them getting to the streetlamp in between all of the great lovey stuff.
The end was really sweet. Nothing about it really wanted me to read more, though. Like I'd be content with stopping there. Maybe add a cliffhanger or something just too hook the reader right at the end.
As for the rest, I love it. You have good transitions that bring one scene to the next, and I enjoy reading about your characters.
You've done a really good job with making the characters. They seemed really developed and real, so thumbs up in that category!
I enjoyed reading the chapter. I think you've got a good idea started. I wish you luck on the rest of it!
Happy writing,
Anna Rae
