In Mishaps of an Overlord DRAFT

Lin’s room is small, but not yet cramped. The walls are painted obnoxiously pink, but she couldn't repaint it. To make up for that, Lin covered the walls generously with posters, pictures, drawings, and post-it notes. There is a small window on the side of the room facing the street. There is another window on the adjacent wall, revealing a hint of the family garden. A petite, high-hanging chandelier and a matching table lamp are the only lighting in the room. There is a desk and a chair by the door. A bed nestled next to the desk--underneath the garden-window.

Perhaps some strange loathing of her dwelling drove Lin up to the attic often, where the windows were bigger and more plentiful in number. Despite being a storage space, the attic was the most empty and dust-free place in the entire house. But now, it has morphed into a makeshift living space for the Overlord of Tildes. Despite Jen’s obvious dislike of messiness, her belongings were strewn across the attic in the most ridiculous positions-- there were stacks of tomes at one window, topped by an archaic, gilded clock; pens and pencils were laid out in strange patterns upon the hardwood floor, as if expecting some sort of make-believe ritual; an occasional stuffed bird hung by a foot from the ceiling; hard, leather boxes and half-unraveled rolls of fabric sat everywhere in precarious formations.

The rest of the house was ---///?@>>^//&

Lin poked her head through the trapdoor. Two raps on the floor brought Jen’s prompt attention. “Ah, the young Lin! How d’ye do?”

Lin shook her head in an attempt to conceal her smile. Aside from her habit of ripping off of other people’s works, Jen also liked to switch accents every other day. Instead of answering her, Lin simply hoisted herself through the tiny trapdoor, lugging a bag of sugary treats behind her. “Finished already?” She asked rhetorically, casting a quick glance at an empty sack on the makeshift desk. “You sure can consume a lot of sugar.”

The other girl huffed, “Of course, I’ve explained before that I require the constant intake of sweet-tasting carbohydrates, yes?” Lin shook her head again.

A smartish snap from the delicately pale, long fingers of the Overlord brought the meandering books to attention. Another commanding snap, and they flew back to their supposed roosts in a forthwith. Lin deposited her offering and drew the rickety rocking chair up to the bed.

“I have a math test tomorrow,” Lin explained hesitantly, “Can you help me study for it?” A familiar green-covered book slid out from its hiding spot in a corner of the attic-- Jen had requested a copy of all of Lin’s textbooks. The heavy material landed lightly upon the crate-desk--imaginary stardust flew. “Of course~~~” The book flipped open obediently under Jen’s stern gaze, and proceeded to spew out its innards in the form of formulas, numbers, and equations. Lin watched raptly as the symbols wriggled free of their dormant selves and lept into the air. Jen poked at the floating numbers, rearranging them until they fell in line. “You’ve been struggling with quadratics in particular. However, they’re not so bad, if you can learn to see them like this…”

An hour of unintentionally humorous lectures later (some of the formulas are quite playful, and had to be yelled at by Jen in order to stay still), Lin felt quite hyped for good results and thanked the Overlord with promises of more cookies. A quick look outside the window told of afternoon tea and light naps, and Lin was compelled to fulfill her chores for the day. Just as she turned to leave, however, a sudden squeak from Jen stopped her in her tracks (A/N: I DON’T squeak. The Overlord does, but I don’t squeak, okay? >:C Okay…).

“‘Eeeeeey! I’ve been summoned!” Jen squealed happily (A/N: I DON’T SQUEAL EITHER, JUST SAIYAN.), the single strand of raven-black hair sticking outrageous out of her head writhed as if dancing. “Ohhhhh! And it seems that the person in distress is quite close to here. Right next door, if I may say.”

“Next door?” Lin’s eyes widened. “W-well… we only have one neighbor…”

“That is perfect, yes?” Jen piped up happily. “Why don’t you come with me, Lin? You can learn how the process works, yes?”

“What process?” Lin inquired, completely bewildered.

“Helping people is the job of an Overlord!” The impatient reply squashed all senses of mutiny, and Lin found herself being dragged down the attic quite forcefully by an over-excited Jen. “And as my not-so-official apprentice, this is an important hands-on lesson, yes?”

Why does it feel like you’re ripping off of Gintama more and more as the story progresses???!! Lin complained to the black hole she entertained at the back of her mind. And this is only the second chapter!!!

The door of Lin’s centuries-old house burst open in a frenzy of exhilaration as Jen dashed out, only to be stopped immediately as she skidded to a rapid halt on the dirt road. A middle-aged lady was ambling towards them in a crazed fashion as she struggled with an ink-like blob of something that clung to her graying brown hair. “Lin!” She cried out, upon seeing the girl, “Help! Do SOMETHING!”

A/N: Does this chapter hurt to read? It should. I forgot about the deadline due to Review Day, so I forgot to finish this chapter until literally 20 minutes before RD started… ehehehe…. ._________________. Well, I will rewrite this someday, but please only pay attention to the part up until Jen has finished helping Lin with her mathzzzz. Ignore the rest, as it is nothing but the author’s mad ramblings in a desperate attempt to catch up to deadline… ehehehe…. sorry………. yeah……….

Alright, time to annoyingly nitpick again! AHAAHAHAHAHAHA I'MSORRYPLZDON'THATEME

First off, I'd like to say that mid-chapter A/Ns... aren't my favorite thing. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like these small message disrupt the flow of the story, or, if it's serious (which yours is not), take the seriousness out of the situation. I prefer people who mark the line with '*' and make a note at the end. I mean, okay, fine, you want to emphasize that the Overlord is based off of you but doesn't share the traits you don't like, OKAY, just please don't stop the story to do so.

As I mentioned before (or maybe not), try breaking up your dialogue paragraphs more. They're stuffed together and confuse me. Description is fine, since there's not much to be done about that.

And... done! Wow, I just reread my review and I sound really prissy while writing these. Hue hue hue.... hue?

Hue hue hue hue hue... well at least summer's here :D
Thanks for anader rebuew, an' Ah shor dew 'ope dat yew'll dew s'moar o' dem. Can you understand my accent? Nope. :D But if you can, I might just use it at some point in the story... ('w' ) Hmn....
And I do tend to like making a lot of little tsukkomis and the such, and I am aware that not a lot of people are fond of that habit, so I'll watch it in my future installments.

Hey Jen!
Hope it's not too late to review this, I hadn't noticed it earlier. :(

Anyway, another fun piece! I liked it a lot, continuing your great style from the first chapter.

I just wanted to let you know that in the first and second paragraphs, you accidentally switch to present tense for a bit. The rest is written in past, so I suggest you just look over that bit and adjust it.

I know you wanted readers to ignore the last part, but I just wanted to comment on a bit of it:

A middle-aged lady was ambling towards them in a crazed fashion as she struggled with an ink-like blob of something that clung to her graying brown hair.

I just don't think that anyone could amble in a crazed fashion. Ambling is more like walking slowly without too much purpose, and I don't think it matches up very well with the lady trying to get away from the ink blob, who is probably frantic and hurrying.

Anyway, happy to read your work anytime!~~~ :D

'Eeeeeeey :3 Thanks for the review~~~ \(>w<)
I'm always looking for reviews, so it's never too late to R & R one of my works! :3 Also, verb-tense is one of my greatest struggles... hehehe.... >_> Ahem. Well, anyways, thanks for dropping by, and happy writing~~~!

Hey, Sarah here for a review.

I liked your use of humour in this piece. It was less straight out funny and more pure absurdity, which is a style I love, but hardly ever see people using. I especially liked the references to different anime's (even if the only one I recognized thus far was the Black Butler one from your first chapter).

The character of Jen seems quite crazy (in a good way of course). Her excitability kind of reminds me of myself (BTW, I do squeal when happy), which was another reason I found myself getting quite absorbed in this story. Lin is also a rather interesting character. I found it funny how she's using all these powers for homework help, even though it seems like she could do literally anything. (I wish I could have Jen's help to study for exams).

Overall you have a style of writing that I don't really recognize, but still like. It's very casual and relaxed, which makes it easy to read and understand. It's kind of fast paced, but it doesn't lose the reader which is great. :)

Happy review day and I hope this helped :)

Thank you so much for the review~~~! \(>w<) It was helpful :D And yes, being an Overlord is quite advantageous, yes? Though, it's sad that the one character I named after myself is a few bajillion times smarter/cooler than I am... Being an author is hard~~~ X) Once again, thank you, I do hope you stick around some more, and happy writing~~~!

p.s. YAY someone gotz a specific reference! :D *happy dance* There are a few more, yes. The title of the chapters themselves are references, actually XD

Howdy!

First off, for the lack of of revision you claim to have, the chapter read fairly well. This is probably because of your clear writing style. I appreciate how you form your sentence structure. It isn't robotic or boring because you mix up the pattern of the sentences. (I'm sorry if this seems like I'm rambling. It's 12:30 am my time. It's starting to catch up with me.)

Anyway, my favorite part was your description of the setting within the first couple paragraphs or so. I felt as though I could easily picture her room and relate it to some of the tiny bedrooms my friends have. I also liked your characterization of the magic Jen was using to teach Lin. I found it entertaining as a reader.

The only trouble I saw throughout the chapter was your format for dialogue. It was difficult for me to follow with some intermixed into the paragraphs. Remember to make new paragraphs with a change of topic or speaker. This way, the reader will be able to follow your writing. You payed attention to this rule fairly well, I was mostly lost in this paragraphs:

Just separate with the change of topic/speaker and you should be good to go.

The last fix was about the missing content, but you have that under control.

Anyway, great job! If you need anyone to review anything for you in the future, just shoot me a message! Keep writing,

-Jade

Thank you so much for dropping by~~~~~ And yes, I do struggle with formatting the dialogue sometimes... thanks for pointing that out :D The main emphasize of this chapter is settings description, so I'm quite glad that it was enjoyable to read. Thank you once again, I do hope you stick around more, and happy writing~~~~~!

Wow. Just by reading that opening paragraph, I can tell that I really like your style of writing. :D It reminds of of Jessie Burton's style in The Miniaturist (and if you haven't read that novel, don't worry, its a good thing).

The rest of the house was ---///?@>>^//&
You are allowed to swear. :P

Jen poked at the floating numbers, rearranging them until they fell in line. “You’ve been struggling with quadratics in particular. However, they’re not so bad, if you can learn to see them like this…”
Your descriptions of the magic (should I call it magic?) are excellent and I imagined the scene without a problem.

It didn't hurt to read! I enjoyed it. Keep writing this, it's great. :D

Thank you for the review~~~~! \(>w<)
Oh, and the part I censored isn't a swear... *hint hint* *wink wink* You're going to see those a lot as the story progresses *hint hint* *nudge nudge* *wink wink except I don't wink 'cause I find it kinda creepy no offense to anyone hopefully*
I usually don't incorporate swears into my writing~~~

As for the book, The Miniaturist, is it good? \(OoO)/ I'm trying to build up both my writing style and my summer reading list, so I'm looking for good books~~~~~

Well anyways, thank you for the review, please do stick around, and happy writing~~~!

Hmn... for some reason, there's a section of the story missing, right after the part written with a jumble of symbols... It should say "but Jen's attic is a wonderland." Along with a lot of other things. Is it juts my computer glitching out? Or is it visible?

Nope, it's not visible.

It's a great book! You should give it a go. Although, the first half is quite boring, it's the second part where the real action begins.

Hm... It's strange, when I go to edit the work, it seems to be missing a huge chunk of the piece, but in the actual piece itself, it's only missing a little bit... I guess it's a bug...? I'll try to fix it after RD ends.

Okay... new book gotz! :D Thanks for the suggestion~~~
