Disclaimer: Jen is not responsible for the insanity of the Overlord, as the Overlord is merely a persona of Jen, exclusively for YWS use.
Lin gawked at the black-eyed girl in front of her, almost dropping her favorite pen in her utter shock. There’s no way that worked! What is this, Ao no Exorcist?
The black-eyed girl’s mouth opened and closed in some strangely familiar rhythm. “Good afternoon!” A hollow and sickly sweet voice drifted from her pulsing throat. Her head tilted cutely, a few strands of straight black bangs fell over her pitch-black eyes. “Hast thou summoned watashi?” A lifetime of manners forced Lin to stop staring, smile, and answer the ridiculous creature she somehow managed to conjure. “Er…. yes…. Yes I did.” What was with that absurd mix of old English and Japanese…?
“What biddings hast thou for me to do?” Again, the strangely familiar pattern of the Overlord of Tilde’s mouth triggered some strange feeling in the back of Lin’s mind.
“Um… Er… sorry… I… uh… didn’t think that would actually…” Lin quickly rotated her swivel chair back towards her paper-littered desk. She glanced back at the Overlord nervously. “I didn’t think I would actually be able to… summon… you.”
“Most people don’t.” The other girl looked around, spotted a tray of cookies on Lin’s messy desk, and stalked over. She continued after purloining a particularly eye-catching one. “Recently, I’ve been summoned more than usual. However, it doesn’t seem that any one of them carried the process through on purpose. Youngsters are strange, yes?”
Lin gave up her facade of politeness and simply stared at the Overlord as she scrutinized the cookie. Well of course! It's way too easy! I literally drew one single tilde enclosed in a circle and you came??!!!!!
After finding the treat to be of satisfactory quality, the black-eyed girl perched on a nearby chair and began nibbling on it. “If you have no use for me, I will leave, yes?” Failing to find meaning in the strangely au courant voice, Lin simply shook her head. “No, wait, actually… Can you help me with my math homework?” The Overlord immediately polished off the cookie, produced a napkin from a pant pocket, and elegantly cleaned herself off before leaping energetically off of the chair. “At your service~~~!”
HOW DO YOU SPEAK IN TILDES????!!!! Lin took her mental outburst and threw it into the black hole at the back of her mind.
The next ten minutes consisted of Lin looking onwards in amazement from the side as the Overlord cheerfully pulled a freaking stereo from her left pant pocket, listened to upbeat anime theme songs, did Lin’s math homework, cleaned up her desk and her room, organized her school binders, and watched half an episode of Assassination Classroom, all while occasionally sneaking away more of Lin’s cookies. “That tray of cookies was my birthday present, you know.” Lin remarked, raising an eyebrow. “It is good to share good things with everyone, yes?” The Overlord finished her work by making up Lin’s bed as well. “That should do it.”
“How do you work so fast?” Lin inquired, wide-eyed and genuinely interested. “I’m simply one heck of a butler, yes?”
THIS IS THE WRONG UNIVERSE FOR THAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!! Lin mentally screamed again, and once again, took that and chucked it into the black hole. “Er… I see…” A sudden thought crossed her flustered mind. “Um… would you mind teaching me how to… do that?” The Overlord’s whiteless eyes widened, slightly frightening the girl. Then, she vanished in an instant. Lin gaped at the spot where she once stood, then ran into the corridor of her house, looking around wildly for her. “Um… Over--Overlord of Tildes?” She called out softly, wincing at the ridiculous title and the fact that she just uttered it out loud. “Just call me Jen!” A sudden rush of air on the nape of Lin’s neck brought her spiraling around, only to stagger backwards as she found herself only inches away from the void-like eyes. “Woah--what? Where did you--”
Jen held up a bundle of blankets and a turned slightly to reveal a gorged and overstuffed backpack. “I teleported home to collect some things. You would like to learn how to be an Overlord, yes? I will teach you, but I would need to stay at your house, yes?” The girl finished her nonsensical speech and wheeled around to head back into Lin’s pink-walled room. Lin stared at her back for awhile, speechless from an unexplainable sense of longing, then turned to glance down the lifelessly gray corridor of her empty house. A moment’s pause brought her determination, and she ran back into her room.
She returned to the sight of Jen cleaning off a completely empty tray. “Wait-- You ate all my cookies???!!!!!” Lin immediately bit her tongue. She didn’t mean to raise her voice. Jen simply shook her head in a grave fashion. “I have no choice. Once summoned, I can only support my existence through the continuous eating of sweets, or else I suffer from withdrawal symptoms, yes?”
Isn’t that trait from a whole different manga altogether??!!! Lin decided to ignore Jen’s tendencies to rip off of other mangas and sat on her bed.
Jen placed the sparkling tray down carefully. “Now, you would want to explain why you would like to learn from me, yes? Or else the readers will be confused and stop reading, yes?” What are you, Kagura-chan??!!!! Lin slapped her forehead, completely forgetting her promise to ignore Jen’s idiosyncrasy.
“I just want to take care of myself better, that’s all.” Lin twiddled her thumbs, averting her gaze. “Besides, it’s not that bad. I can finally talk to someone…”
“...There’s no need to think of me as a living being.” Jen remarked as she searched through Lin’s desk drawers for sweets. “The human tendency to seek company for a reason other than their own survival is quite unique, yes? As for me, I’m only here to help, yes?”
Lin smiled and shook her head, only barely reminding herself not to say anything. She collected Jen’s gargantuan bundle of blankets and pillows. “All the other rooms are taken, so you’ll have to sleep in the attic, sorry.” Jen sensed a pause in Lin’s motion and turned around expectantly. Lin dug a piece of Starburst from her jacket’s right pocket and held it out. “Thank you for staying, anyways.” The other girl took it graciously.

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
Pretty good! I'm going to ignore the fact that this was really random, since I think that was your point.
I might sound like a little bit of a hypocrite saying this, since I don't do it 100% of the time either, but try 'taking turns'. Meaning, one paragraph per character. Otherwise, dialogue and actions blur together and make it confusing. Sometimes, I have to briefly double-check to make sure I got the right dialogue to the right character.
Also, you spam the exclamations marks/questions marks. The fact that you bolded and italized AND did caps for some is enough. Wayyy too much emphasis, Jen.
Is it just me, or did the Overlord not speak consistently? She started off with a mix of Japanese and English, but I don't notice it again. It's one thing to give a character an unique speech style. It's another thing to drop something off suddenly, since it gives the impression of the writer trying to force the character to sound 'special' for that ONE line.
Alright, I'm just nitpicking now ;u; This is why I didn't want to write reviews... I'm probably just annoying you...
Pffft Ali, you were so soft on me I could have taken your review and socked a duckling with it, and the duckling wound't even have noticed.... ('-' ) Your review is fine, stop worrying so much. One advice I give: read the other reviews before you review, that ways, you know what to say, and what already has been said. Either way, thanks for the review, and hopefully you'll do more of them!
Hey there Jen,
Allow me to thank you for posting this. It was great! I found it to be very entertaining and rather funny.
I just though I would mention something here. So, you use the bold a lot, especially combined with italics. Personally, I wouldn't do that, but it's a style choice so you can decide how best to do that. It does kind of give the story its own personality, in a way, though, so you may wish to keep it. However, I definitely would not combine italics, bold, and all caps, as that is probably a bit much.
Other than that, I haven't got much to say, although I thought it was hilarious that Jen stole things from mangas, and I also like that Lin has a black hole in the back of her mind that she chucks things into. XD
Can I summon the Overlord and become a Tilde Apprentice? ~
Oh, one tiny mistake I found:
Just an accidental double quotation marks there.
Great job, looking forward to one next week!
