Chapter 2 - The White Boy | The Performer: A Danganronpa Fanfiction

A/N ~ So this chapter is quite a bit longer than the previous one, so yeah.

And I'm rubbish with chapter names, I know, no need to tell me :')

Anyways, I hope you enjoy mateys ',:)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Leon and I had made it to the gymnasium in time before the entrance ceremony had begun, and sat in the back row of seats so as to not be seen by the other students present. One or two had noticed our quiet and rushed entrance, but other than that we were mostly ignored.

The headmaster of the school eventually came on to the stage and stood at the podium that was placed there and started his speech, welcoming us all to Hope's Peak Academy. I zoned out a little during his speech and looked at my surroundings.

The school's gym was huge, probably big enough to fit a few hundred people in for special events. The floor was made out of oak slats, with the Hope's Peak emblem printed in the middle of the room. White tiles covered the walls, and huge windows were letting in a great amount of sunlight from the sides. Tiered rows of benches led up to these windows, most likely there for any students wanting to watch a sports event that was held in here. The stage had only a red curtain as a backdrop, but it seemed to make the stage appear more glorious than it actually was due to it's rich colour.

"Pssst," Leon hissed, nudging my side with his elbow. "You bored? 'Cause I sure as hell am."

I turned to him and shook my head. Being bored was never a thing that happened to me, no matter the lack of activities. I was always either taking an interest in where I was or had ideas swirling around in my head relating to my work. Maybe since my mind was always busy I never ever got bored, not even once.

"Pffft, lies." The punk sighed before slouching in his seat. "I just want this to be over with so I can go and check out my dorm."

Dorm? Oh yeah, that's right! We were all assigned a dorm to stay in during our time at Hope's Peak. I started to wonder what mine would look like. Was it a light and airy room, or was it rather bland and dull? Was it decorated, or would we have to do that ourselves? Would I have one to myself, or would I be-

"Alright! I need you all to pay close attention now!" The booming voice of the headmaster snapped me out of my thoughts. I guess my questions would have to be answered later. "When I call your name, please stand up! Got it? Good!" The headmaster then beamed whilst holding a sheet of paper in front of him. Then the name-calling started.

I gripped the bottom of my pink skirt nervously. Why were our names being called out? Was it to put us into our classes? Or was it to put us into groups to get to know each other? If either of those were the case, then I hope that I'm put in the same class/group as Leon. It would be nice to have one person I knew with me.

"Emily Robertson!"

My name was called and I stood up obediently whilst neatening my skirt. Several eyes looked at me, mainly those who were standing along with myself, but I was too nervous to look back. Instead, I averted my gaze to the matte black brogues that adorned my feet.

The headmaster cleared his throat before speaking again. "Those of you who are standing, you are all in the seventy-seventh class!"

Ah, so that means I wouldn't be in the same class as Leon. Damn it.

"Those who remain will make up the seventy-eighth class!" The headmaster then bowed, and started to take his leave before saying, "I'll leave you to make yourselves acquainted with your new classmates! And remember, your timetables are in your dorms!"

Then he was gone, leaving all of us to start making introductions.

I sighed sadly as I sat back down. Turning to Leon with a small smile, I said, "You may as well go and make yourself familiar with everyone."

"You sure Emily? I can stay with you if ya want."

"It's fine, honestly. Just go and meet everyone. I'll... be fine." I said that last part more to myself than to Leon to convince myself that I was okay with it. I just didn't want to be an unnecessary burden.

"Well, if you're sure..." He sounded hesitant as he stood up, pulling up the handle of his suitcase as he did. "I'll catch ya later, yeah?"

Smiling wider to reassure Leon, I nodded in response.

"Well, see ya later then!" And then he left to talk to a blue-haired girl and a black-haired boy with red eyes.

After seeing Leon leave I trembled slightly. I had no idea who to approach and talk to. Ugh, why did I have to ignore the people who stood up alongside me? It would have been useful to know what everyone in my class looked like, but no, I had to look at my feet the whole damn time.

A tap on my shoulder startled me out of my thoughts, causing me to almost fall out of my seat. My head whipped around, and my eyes met with ones of a grey-green colour, which were framed with fluffy white hair. The face of this person was too close to me for my liking, but I couldn't back away, otherwise I would have ended up on the floor.

"Hey," the person's breathy voice said, which helped me identify them as a male. "You seemed like you were lonely, so I thought I would keep you company."

The boy's face moved away from mine as he pulled the seat next to me out and sat on it, then smiled politely at me. However, when he saw how I anxious I was, he panicked a little. "Ah, unless you don't want me to keep you company! I wouldn't blame you." Then his eyes looked down at his hands as he fidgeted with them, looking rather upset.

'Seriously, Emily, you need to get a grip.' My conscious was telling me. 'Snap out of it and make sure he knows that it's fine for him to be around you!'

"N-no, it's absolutely fine!" I assured the white-haired boy. "It would be nice if you stayed and t-talked to me."

He looked back at me with a bigger smile than he had before. "Really? You want trash like me to stay here with you?"

Trash? Is that what he thought of himself? He didn't look like trash to me, but I guess he had his reasons for calling himself such a thing, so I let it slide. "Y-yeah, if it's not too much of a b-bother."

The boy chuckled lightly, clearly happy that he had someone to talk to now. Then his gaze shifted from my face down to my hands, which were tightly gripping the hem of my skirt again.

"There's no need to be so nervous," He spoke softly, whilst prying my iron grip away from my skirt. He then held my small, timid hands in his soft, slender ones. "We are classmates after all."

This boy was going to be in my class? Really? Well, I don't think he would've approached me so easily if he wasn't going to be in the same class as me, so what he said must have been true.

My eyes skimmed over him, taking in his appearance. He seemed to be taller than me, and appeared to be really skinny. His snow white hair was messy and shoulder length, with a slight ahoge sticking out the top of his head. The ends of his hair were a slight reddish-brown colour, perhaps from dip-dying his hair quite a while ago. His skin was almost as pale as his hair, almost resembling porcelain. He wore a dark green coat which went past his knees at the back and had a jagged-cut tail. A red square pattern could be seen on the right shoulder of the coat, contrasting with the cool tones of the green underneath. Below this he wore a white t-shirt with a strange red symbol printed on it, which kind of helped make the boys' skin look just a little less pale than it actually was. He also wore typical black jeans, with a chain that attached to the front and back of the waistband. He wore smart brown shoes, which had two zippers on the front of each one.

"You have rather interesting eyes," The skinny teen said, his thumb now starting to draw circles on the back of my left hand. "In a good way, of course."

I knew what the boy was referring to when he said I had 'interesting' eyes. My eyes were different colours on each half of my face, which meant that if I wanted to look normal in public I had to wear a coloured contact in one of my eyes to make them both match. On the right half of my face was an emerald green eye, which I know I inherited from my mother; on the other side was an eye of ocean blue, which, according to my sister, I got from my father.

Bowing my head, I mumbled a "thank you" before the boy spoke again.

"Someone else in our class happens to have the same kind of thing going on," He leaned closer to me and spoke quietly, probably so the person in question wouldn't hear him. "He's the guy wearing the purple scarf over there." He then motioned with his head behind him, where I could see a rather tall figure wearing a long, black jacket with a long purple scarf wrapped loosely around his neck and the lower half of his face. He was looking down at his feet, mumbling something to himself.

"Who's that?" I asked.

"Ah, that's Gundham Tanaka." The young male said whilst laying my hands down on my lap. "He's the Ultimate Breeder."

So that Gundham guy was into animals then? Well, that's actually pretty cool. He might be an okay guy to talk to, but seeing him talking to himself creeped me out a little. It was kinda weird.

"Sorry, where are my manners?" The pale-skinned boy stood up, offering me his hand. "I'm Nagito Komaeda. Nice to meet you."

I took his hand hesitantly, and he pulled me out of my seat. Tilting my head back to look up at him, I responded with, "Emily Robertson."

Wow, he really was tall. How tall? A whole head taller than me. His height may not seem like much to other people, but to an average height girl like me he was pretty tall.

For some reason I started to feel guilty. Maybe it was because Nagito had approached me with the intention of introducing himself and having an actual conversation, but for the whole duration of being in each other's company I had barely said anything. Perhaps now would be a good time to make a contribution?

"U-um, so," I stuttered, my hands going back down to the hem of my skirt. "What's your Ultimate t-talent, Nagito?"

He seemed taken aback by my question, as he took a small step away from me and had a distressed expression across his face. Did I offend him? Oh God, was his talent something embarrassing that he didn't want to reveal to me? Damn it! I open my mouth to try and be nice towards someone and I end up making them upset. Jeez, can't I do anything right?

"A-ah, Robertson-san... Y-you used my first name..." He chuckled nervously, folding his arms across his chest.

Dear Lord, I forgot! The Japanese refer to each other by their last names until they're close enough to refer to each other by their first names! How could I be so stupid?!

"O-oh my gosh, I am so sorry!" I hid my face with my hands in shame. "Please forgive me! It was a mistake, I didn't mean-"

"I-it's okay!" I felt a hand patting me on the head, then my arms were pulled away, revealing the gentle smile that Nagito had on his face as he crouched down to my eye level. "If you're used to calling people by their first name, then I won't object to it."

"A-are you sure? I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable-"

"Really, it's fine!" He stood up straight and beamed at me. "Actually, I'm quite flattered."

Really? He was flattered that I called him by his first name?

"In fact," He put his hand on my head again, locking his eyes with mine. "If it makes you feel better, I'll call you by your first name too."

"U-uh, you don't have to-"

"Please, I insist! An Ultimate Performer like you deserves to be called by their first name, right?"

"W-what?!" My eyes widened to the size of saucer plates. "How do you know what my talent is?!"

He giggled. "Emily-san, it's easy to know what your talent is because of your celebrity status! Your name is known worldwide, is it not?"

"Yeah, it... it is." I answered reluctantly. It's true that my name is well known in various countries, especially in Britain, due to my highly rated performances in musicals, dramas and even in dance shows, but the thought of my name being known in Japan never crossed my mind. Maybe I was more well known than I initially thought.

"Anyway," Nagito said, a hand now on his hip. "To answer your question from before... I'm the Ultimate Lucky Student."

Ultimate... Lucky Student?

"I-it's a pretty useless talent in my opinion!" He laughed, reaching up to scratch his head. "There's nothing special about it. It's not as great a talent as yours is."

"N-no, your talent is great!" I smiled up at him, starting to gain some confidence. "I mean, having luck as your talent means you must have a lot of amazing things happen to you, right?"

"Well, I guess," He looked down at his feet. Then, with a smile on his face, he said, "But enough about me. Why don't we go and meet the others?"

"The... others?"

"Yeah! I bet they would love to meet an Ultimate like you!"

"B-but..." I glanced over at the cluster of people behind Nagito. The thought of having to approach some of those people intimidated me. For example, there was the rather loud girl with colourful hair, whose voice I could hear from across the room as she talked and laughed with a large blonde man who wore a white suit. There was also the guy with a very muscular body, with what seemed to be blue electric sparks jumping from his eyebrows.

"S-some of them... Scare me a little." I told Nagito as I was cautiously looking over the crowd, trying to see if there was someone that seemed remotely okay to talk to.

"Don't worry! They won't bite-"

"Nagito," I turned to him, my shoulders hunched up protectively. "Everyone's so loud... And tall..."

"I'll be with you the whole time, okay?" He squeezed my shoulder gently, trying to reassure me. "You can choose who we talk to, if it helps."

My eyes scanned over the crowd once more, before I spotted a familiar dainty figure conversing with a small man in a chef's outfit.

"Hold on," I frowned, then started power-walking towards the girl.

'It couldn't possibly be her, could it?' I asked myself. 'She would've told me she was coming here, right?'

"E-Emily-san! W-what is it?" Nagito stumbled after me, clearly confused at my sudden actions. "I-is something-"

'It must be her. No one else wears their hair in the same style that she does.'

"Emily-san, w-wait!" Nagito was right behind me, struggling to keep up despite the fact his legs were longer than mine.

'I need to know. I just need to confirm it.'

I had reached the back of the blonde-haired girl and tapped her lightly on the shoulder. She finished what she was saying to the little chef before turning to face me, a sweet smile on her face. She dropped it straight away and replaced it with an expression of shock.

We said each other's names almost instantly.

"Sonia?!"

"Emily?!"

Hey there! I'm here for a quick review on this review day. I apologize because I haven't read/watched Dangaronpa, but hopefully I can be of some help nevertheless.

So I really like this so far! I really like Emily - she seems to be really sweet. I think it's really cool that she's a performer, especially at that age. It's definitely something interesting to add to her personality. Overall, this is written quite well, with a good balance of dialogue, description, and action.

All the talk of Ultimate Talents are interesting - I'm assuming this comes from the show (or whatever it is) and if I was familiar with it I'd know what they were talking about. Right now, I'm interested in what exactly the effects the talents have on their lives - like does the Lucky Schoolkid tend to win all the raffles the school holds and guess right on all the tests?

I do think Emily tends to stutter a bit too much, though, at least for my personal preference. The first few times, it's fine, but when it's almost every line, it gets rather repetitive and wearying.

I noticed you put Emily's thoughts in italics, which is what you're supposed to do, but generally you don't need to put the quote around it as well. Just italics are fine. ;)

Do the Japanese really go by last name until they feel comfortable with first name, even between teenagers/people of the same social status? Because I happen to live in Japan, and I don't see a lot of that, though I don't speak Japanese so I mostly talk to English-speaking Japanese people. You might want to fact-check that.

And that's all I've got! Good luck, and keep writing!

Review

Hi Born! Mage here to do the long overdue promised review! :D So let's get onto this review, shall we?

This chapter was very well written. Your descriptions of characters were incredibly detailed and awesome, especially with Nagito. I couldn't find many grammatical issues - in fact, I could only find one involving a comma.

One or two had noticed our quiet and rushed entrance, but other than that we were mostly ignored.

There should be a comma after "that" and before "we".

The rest of the review is just my reactions to different things revealed in this chapter.

Dear Lord, I forgot! The Japanese refer to each other by their last names until they're close enough to refer to each other by their first names! How could I be so stupid?!

Seeing that I am not Japanese, I could imagine myself doing the exact same thing. It would be funny if Emily continues to make that mistake throughout the story, but, if not, it was still something nice to include that most people would probably not even think about.

An Ultimate Performer like you deserves to be called by their first name, right?

And now we know her job. Maybe she met Sonia when playing for her family? Who knows? I guess I'll just have to read the next chapter!

Keep up the awesome work - which I doubt you'll have trouble with - and good luck on your writing endeavors! Have a great day/night! :D
