Okay so what was your favorite childhood memory?

I dunno...Do you ever stop asking questions?

I didn't say it was your turn, Mister!

A smile spread across my lips as I sent the text out to him.

"Mari, what are you smiling about?" My sister asked, looking at me suspiciously. I quickly locked my phone and turned to her.

"Nothing. Just a funny text." I said, trying to hide my expression.

My sister raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Is it from Jakob again?"

I looked away, ignoring her question. There was a new text on my screen. I had met Jakob through some friends when I had entered my new school. He was really a cool guy. We had similar interest (do you know how rare it is to find a guy who likes anime?) and he was intelligent and had a comforting steadiness to him. We had been texting, non-stop, since the beginning of the school year. We met during break and shared lunch with our friends. We had become best friends in the shortest amount of time.

"Why not just go out with him?" My sister asked, taking my silence as a yes. I looked at her, unable to control the heat rising towards my cheeks.

"We are going out tonight."

"I mean as more than friends, stupid." She teased.

I just shook my head. It was a valid possibility, but what if it didn't work out? I liked him but did he like me?

Jakob picked me up that night in his shabby, out of shape, but endearing truck. We called her Betsy. I tried hard to look normal, but the thought of dating had crept into my head, making me flustered over how I looked. I lifted myself into the vehicle (it was pretty tall) and gave my usual hello to Jakob.

"Hey, Mister. How are you feeling?"

"I'm good. You?" He replied, looking at me directly.

"Spiffy."

"Neat." He smiled slightly and we drove off. Jakob didn't speak freely very often. He chose his words carefully, replying to everything steadily. He laughed appropriately. I laughed unnecessarily. He always had an important thing to say. This is what I liked most about him.

Tonight, it went the same as usual. We looked through piles of manga (Japanese comic books), I asked him questions, he replied in the most interesting way, then we grabbed a drink, reading our new books. I felt my heart pick up as I looked at him. I kind of liked the way his black hair flopped down in front of his face and how he looked so concentrated in what he was doing.

I shook my head. No, Mari. I mulled it over in my mind and decided to see what kind of possibilities were there.

"Uhm, Jakob?" I said, trying to sound aloof.

"Hm?" He looked up from his book.

"What do you look for in a girl?" I said. Darn me and my inability to be stealthy.

"Huh? Where did this come from?" He raised an eye brow. "Let's just say I'm pretty picky. Look at my past crushes for reference..."

He had liked three girls before. Each were short, cute, with long black hair and almond shaped eyes. Each of them had artistic capabilities. Each were very sweet and nice.

"Ah..." was all I could say. I didn't look like those girls. I was average in height, not as perky and anime-like, and my hair was full of black curls. This disheartened me a bit. After reading the rest of our books, we were walking back to the car and sat there for a few moments. I couldn't conjure up any conversation that could fill the silence.

"Uhm, so...why did you asked me what kind of girl I liked?" He asked suddenly.

"I...I just wanted to know so maybe I could...I could help you out." I said quietly. That's a lie, I thought to myself.

"Help me...get a girl?" He said, smiling a bit as if it was silly.

"Yea. I know you want a girlfriend." He had told me this awhile ago, considering he never had one before. He never liked taking chances without knowing a certain outcome.

"Okay, so what do you suggest?" Jakob said, brushing the strands of hair that always found a way to cover his forehead.

"I think...You should be more confident..." I said. "I mean...You're pretty charming and nice and sweet...girls probably would go for you."

"What if they count me out and I make a fool of myself?" He asked.

"Well, sometimes you have to take that chance." I said, looking directly at him. We locked eyes. It happens a lot, though now it made my heart beat kick up a few paces. He had a thoughtful look about him and his lips formed into a small smile.

"Maybe you're right...I think...I'll try and take a chance..." He said. My face grew hot. Was he going to ask me out?

Then I realized he took out his phone and our eye contact broke. He started typing and I took the time to compose myself. In the dark car, I don't think my red face was noticeable.

"So what should I say to her?" He asked suddenly. I swore my heart fell down to my stomach.

"Who?" I asked, trying to sound normal.

"Taylor." He said. Taylor was a girl who he had developed a crush for a year earlier, but she had gotten a boyfriend a few months later and he gave up.

"Just...start by talking about homework or something...." I took a deep breathe and sighed out, "Then maybe something will happen from there..."

He nodded and I heard his phone clicking as he texted her, then started up the car. Silly Mari, how could you ever have think that he could...?, I thought quietly, keeping my eyes out the window.

We arrived back at my house at 10 pm.

"Thanks, Mari, for the advice. I really think you helped me today..." He said as I got out of the car. I looked at Jakob's face once more, locking eyes with him again.

"No problem!" I said, trying to sound cheerful. I closed the door and started to walk back to my house, but I turned suddenly.

"Jakob, I-" I started but the engine revved and he was off. I watched the car turn the corner and vanish from my sight. I finished my sentence quietly to myself. "I think...I love you..."

hullo, MissAtomicBomb. here to review.

technical errors

"Mari, what are you smiling about?" my sister asked, looking at me suspiciously.

dialogue tags do not stand on their own; they are part of a sentence and is attached to the direct dialogue quotation.

"Nothing. Just a funny text," I said, trying to hide my expression.

when a dialogue ends in a period, it is replaced with a comma.

"Why not just go out with him?" my sister asked, taking my silence as a yes.

"I mean as more than friends, stupid," she teased.

don't forget that when the dialogue tag-phrase doesn't start with a I or a proper noun, it is not capitalized.

"I'm good. You?" he replied, looking at me directly.

"Uhm, so...why did you asked me what kind of girl I liked?" he asked suddenly.

"I...I just wanted to know so maybe I could...I could help you out," I said quietly.

"Help me...get a girl?" he said, smiling a bit as if it was silly.

"I think...You should be more confident..."

i'm sure you can choose on your own if you should capitalize after an ellipses or not; but please stick with one.

"What if they count me out and I make a fool of myself?" he asked.

"Maybe you're right...I think...I'll try and take a chance..." he said.

"So what should I say to her?" he asked suddenly.

Taylor was a girl whom he had developed a crush for a year earlier, but she had gotten a boyfriend a few months later and he gave up.

an objective pronoun is needed here.

"Just...start by talking about homework or something...."

delete extra period.

"Thanks, Mari, for the advice. I really think you helped me today..." he said as I got out of the car.

thoughts

i think this was so cute. it's an easy read, which works very well with general fiction YA (well, in YA in general). the flow was nice and non-confusing. the first scene (Mari texting Jakob) was a good start - a situation that is very relatable. *coughs*

i like the way you made me wish all throughout that Mari and Jakob would actually start dating though deep inside me i knew they wouldn't. the parts where you give the reader brief hopes (such as when Jakob was about to text the girl) i shall give you a like for making me smile so much.

keep writing,
porcey xoxo

p.s. read that this is based on real life. *whimpers*

thank you for your interest :) and your corrections. It is greatly appreciated

Hey there MissAtomicBomb! :)

I love this. I absolutely love this.
I cried a bit at the ending. It's just so different and so nice.

It's a flawless piece, no grammatical or any other errors whatsoever. But the flow of words aren't very smooth at places.

It's quite emotional and I like pieces like this. This has little emotional description but adequate. I like stories like this. Most love stories emphasis on the thought and feelings way too much.

I loved it that it didn't end with Mari and Jakob getting together. That saves the story form getting too cliched.

You have great narrating skills and you did a pretty good job. :D

Keep writing,
~Gigi

Thank you for the encouragement. I truly appreciate it!

This is so sad and sweet!! I love how in the end it doesn't end with the clichê love story, but more of a realistic one. I can feel Mari's pain through your descriptions, but I might suggest adding a bit more imagery and sensory details to really put the reader in the moment. But, overall I really enjoyed this piece.

Thank you for your consideration.^~^

Hey there,

Dreamy here to review. This was indeed a very good teen love story. It was a bit cliched, but you pulled it all really well. I can't find any punctuation or grammatical mistakes, it's the flow of the words, that pulls a sudden brake while reading. I had to go back and repeat the sentence to understand it, correctly. What I really liked about this, is the way you chose to narrate the story. First-person narration is always a mystery to me. But you did a good job doing it. I was able to connect to Mari and her feelings towards Jakob. This is a well written story. And I liked it. Keep up the good work!

Keep writing.

Cheers!!! :D

Thank you for your time ^_^

Hey Miss, Raven here for a review.

I must agree, with John that your story though cliche has a very realistic voice to it, and this voice is more important than anything else in teen romance fiction. For if you cannot express how your protagonist is feeling through words, and thus not creating a good mental landscape. Then the writing is useless. But you, you have created a very clear and emotional landscape of our main character, Mari here.

Everything from her inner dilemma to her outer words are both cleverly written and shaped. Well, I didn't pick up any major grammatical mistakes and this piece is rather well done! I will be interested in any future work of yours.

Keep up the good work!

I appreciate the time you took reading my story and will keep your suggestions in mind. Thank you! ^_^

Hello, my friend.

First, I found your writing to be rather charming. You have a realistic voice steeped in the sort of day to day realism that I am never able to create. That ability is crucial for someone writing within this genre. Therefore, I congratulate you for your words.

Second, a few grammatical things:

After while we were walking back to the car and sat there for a few moments.

A think you left out a word or misspelled one, "After awhile, we were walking..." Something like that, perhaps.

It was only a few quick glances over the story, but I couldn't find any major grammatical mistakes.

Third, some stylistic suggestions:

A smile spread across my lips as I sent the text out to him.

All of my stylistic suggestions will seem annoying and insignificant, I assure you. The "...out to him" part of this sentence disrupted the flow of your writing, to me. You had a rhythm going, that was the first time in my life I spelled rhythm correctly the first time, and that ending seemed to take away from that. I apologize if that makes no sense.

He was really a cool guy.

I do not think this line is necessary because of what comes after. This line simply tells us that the protagonist finds Jakob "cool." However, the next few lines show us why Jakob is "cool." I find showing to be far more effective when writing.

After while we were walking back to the car and sat there for a few moments.

You could simply fill the "while" part of this story with actual dialogue and action, just so no portion of this short story is left unexplored.

It happens a lot, though now it made my heart beat kick up a few paces.

"It happened a lot, though now it..." Keep your tense straight.

Other than those few suggestions, your style fit the story masterfully.

Fourth, your characters.

I do not think I need to say anything about them. Mari was real to me. She was a breathing, living character and I felt her conveyed concisely through your words. For a character in a short story, she was surprisingly developed.

Jakob was a character, through and through. He could have used some depth, though. However, his ambiguous characterization also helped your story, in my opinion. A sort of universal lost love, if you will.

Fifth, your plot.

Now, this story seemed to follow a cliched plot line. That does not mean that it was bad in any sort of way. However, the plot line did feel a bit overused. I challenge you to shake it up a bit. Let us see Mari and Jakob played out in a different way, perhaps?

Overall, a sweet, short story. I would love to read more of your writing. Keep me posted. Happy Writing!

Thank you for your consideration! ^_^ I will take all of your suggestions into consideration and try them out.

You have a fantastic voice, my friend. Message me if you write anything else you'd like me to read!
