I've just finished it--this morning at 2:00. ^_^ Smith catches the quiet despondency and cynicism of a post-Soviet Russian deftly. And he's not at all predictable. Chernobyl is a bleak thing to work through at such god-forsaken hours though, after fencing most of the early night...I was hearing dosimeters as I stumbled around on my way to bed @_@

(I can hear echoes of DD in the dialogue; and dear Arkady has moments that sound like Shan. ^_~ But not as far as rip-off--very much their own characters, Shan and Renko.)

Ach, that's what Dad said, about Shan and Arkady. To which I replied "Ya are aware, Dad, that I wrote this before you gave me the book to read, right?" He shrugged and said something to the effect of "So?" But then, Pros told me he thought Shan was suspiciously similar to Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October, so who knows? ^_^

Glad you enjoyed it, Imp - but still, a dosimeter? Are you sure you don't want to go to the doctor...? *feels under desk for silent alarm button*

I could never imagine Shan anything like Alec Baldwin. Oy, but Smith did very well translating a Russian tone into English. Victor's colourful swearing was easily directly from the Russian (I'll only write it in Russian...)--'Yob tvoyu mat'.

And Shan certainly has more than his own character, and his own atmosphere. It's merely the cynicism and melancholy.

*tries to remember what yob tvoyu mat means... and then decides she really doesn't want to*

Nothing like Alec Baldwin, you say? ^_^ A good thing.

And melancholy's so much fun to write about... or maybe I'm the one who needs some of those little red pills... ^_~ In any event, I'm glad you liked it - though seriously, three in the morning is not a good time to be reading it.

Currently though, I'm reading the diary of Elbridge Gerry, Jr. - Gerry's son who was the Vice President to Madison. Elbridge Gerry from Mass also signed the Declaration. The diary or more apporiately a journal is highly amusing. Young Gerry Jr. is, how should I phrase it? He's a young Buck "in heat." LOL!

Then there's The Hornet's Nest by Jimmy Carter, our Ex-President.
