if it had anything to do with the expectation of sex, the term would say as much. The fact there are people who think it does, says more about them then the term. All it defines is "a situation in which a friendship exists between two people, one of whom has an unreciprocated romantic or sexual interest in the other." It does not outline a expectation of sex, claiming it does more implies your interpretation of one sided affection then changes the meaning of the term.
