Wake Me Up Inside

A Saeverse Production

Image

No matter where you might come from, there is a forest that you are not supposed to enter. It is said that this forest stretches across all realities, tainting those that it comes across. The forest is a terrifying, wild place, and few have knowledge on what lurks within. But despite the many warnings you may have received, you have wandered into the forest. Maybe you wanted to prove to the adults in your life that you can handle things on your own. Maybe you were trying to run away. Maybe you saw the forest and wanted a new place to play. Whatever the case is, you are here, and the forest will not be letting you out of its clutches in the near future.

Fortunately, you are not alone. There are other children here, too, each just as scared as you are by the darkness and the mysteries that surround it. But this is not merely an adventure. You keep getting flashes, things that almost feel like long forgotten memories or long lost dreams - it must be the second option, because there's a problem if it's not...

...In every one of those flashes, you are older than you are now.

An Explanation

The characters were all adults - or relatively old teenagers - when they entered the forest, but have become kids now that they're in it. They've lost all memories past the age they're supposed to be at. While they might have had a good reason for going into the forest, they've forgotten what it is; instead, they'll come up with a reason that makes sense for their childhood self. As the roleplay progresses and the kids explore the forest, they'll begin to get their memories back. They'll come in flashes, and the kids likely won't think too much about them the first few times. Once it begins to happen more, they'll start to question what's going on.

When they finally remember who they are, their bodies will return to normal - but they likely won't be in the company of the other characters when they do. The second challenge they have to face in this roleplay is either convincing the kids that it's them and that they're not actually children, or just deciding its best to keep an eye on the kids to make sure they don't get hurt.

Spoiler! :
Meet Saentiel! You may or may not recognize that name as one of my old usernames. :P Saentiel doesn't look that old right now - he's eight or nine, max. He has short, messy blond hair, and his eyes are a bright blue. He's currently what looks like a white tunic and a pair of sandals. He's definitely on the short side for his age. Most importantly of all, he has a pair of large white angel wings.

While he might have been afraid of the incredibly creepy forest on the edge of Heaven, he'd never admit it. And that had led to his current problem - he had been dared to enter it by a few of the older angels, and he had quickly agreed to the terms. After all, he had to look cool in front of them! They might have been kind of mean sometimes, but everyone in his year looked up to them.

So now he was wandering through the woods, thoroughly lost and growing steadily more terrified. Every noise and every slight movement he caught out of the corner of his eyes made his fear grow exponentially, and he was becoming increasingly more convinced that this forest would be his grave.

Spoiler! :
Taber Aurelius-Renatus, age 8. Bipedal wolf (technically wolf/lion hybrid, but his usual appearance is mostly wolf). Short, gangly, lot of gray-brown fur. Small claws and visible fangs, but pretty harmless. Black shirt, brown pants, both littered with small holes and scratches. Still as easygoing and friendly as ever, if with a slight language barrier.

Aegeas Weywot, age 10. Bipedal otter. Very short and very frightened. Blue shirt and baggy tan pants. A shy kid.

Why did he ever think this was a good idea?

He hadn't seen a forest before, sure. They'd torn up all the trees around his home a long time ago. All those sailors needed bigger boats, or all the lions downstream needed bigger houses, or whatever else his parents told him whenever he complained about living in a mud hole. But wood had a much better texture than adobe. It looked nice, smelled nice, felt new and unique and interesting. Which is all to say that, when his family went to town, where else was he going to wander off to than the grove of trees that somebody had tried (and failed, if the posts embedded into the trees were any sign) to fence off?

Now he was starting to have regrets. He stumbled along, tail smacking against tree roots or brushing against fallen limbs. This forest was far bigger than he'd been led to believe, and he didn't like the mist that had settled over everything. Every little gust of wind, creak of a branch, leaf crunching under his teeth, or trunk that his tail brushed against sent a shiver up his spine.

And that was before he ran into the kid.

He froze when he spotted a figure sitting on top of a very large rock. The mist parted enough for him to catch what looked like a wolf. Paws gripping the stone, the wolf stared ahead, swinging his legs back and forth. Then the wolf glanced down, spotting Aegeas standing between the trees. Flashing his teeth, the wolf waved and growled something incomprehensible.

Aegeas screamed and ran back the way he came. It only took a second or two before the wolf followed - Aegeas could hear twigs snapping as he saw a shadow out of the corner of his eye. It wasn't even a close race. The wolf was sprinting on all fours, had much better traction, and wasn't as likely to run into a tree. And Aegeas was an otter. Otters weren't known for running. So, as much as panic gripped him and kept him moving, he wasn't as surprised when something knocked him onto the ground.

The otter squirmed as a pair of arms pulled him off the ground, but was more than a little confused when those same arms wrapped around his chest. Why wasn't he dead yet? Isn't that how this worked? But no, the wolf was resting his head on Aegeas's shoulder, and looked really happy about it. Didn't it know any better? How rude.

The moment he heard the noises, he immediately froze up. He knew angels couldn't die easily - every kid knew that! - but there was still something terrifying about hearing something running around the in the forest when he had been so certain that he was alone.

He gulped, then promptly felt ashamed for showing any sign of weakness. What if this was part of the dare? They were probably just trying to test him! His shoulders relaxed a bit. Yeah, that had to be it. It wasn't because a monster was lurking in these woods, eager to eat him and his wings. It was just another angel. It had to be. He took a deep breath and peered into the darkness.

"Hel-" he started to hesitantly call out, voice loud, only to clam up several seconds later. What if he was wrong, and it was a monster? Worse, what if it was a human!? He crossed his arms and began to tremble, wings nervously lingering between sticking out straight and protectively wrapping around him.

Maybe he'd been a little hasty about that whole 'not dying' thing.

Aegeas had heard the rustling and shaking in the distance (and what he'd guessed might be the flapping of large wings, but that didn't make much sense, given the density of trees in the forest), but the voice confirmed his fears. There was somebody else in these woods, and he had no way of being sure if that somebody else was friendly or not.

So he tried to place a paw over the wolf's mouth when the wolf howled back a response. Aegeas didn't want to lose his fingers, but there wasn't any point in revealing his location. Especially if the wolf was working with the creature in the woods.

Spoiler! :
Sevy Dawner: Right now, Sevy is seven (and three quarters!). His black hair is worn in a crew cut (a fact that still bothers him), and he has honey-colored eyes and a missing front tooth. Currently wearing a nondescript striped polo (which he finds itchy) and shorts that show off the scrapes on his knees. And, of course, he has a pair of black wings, which are just barely shorter than his arm span.

Sevy stumbled through the undergrowth of a large, spooky forest, desperately trying to keep the tears in his eyes from spilling over.

He had been playing outside when the trees had caught his eye. He had started exploring at first, pretending to be a pirate, but now he was completely lost, just like Mom had said would happen!

Suddenly, through all the noise of crushing leaves he was making, he heard rustling up ahead. His eyes immediately widened, and he stopped and held himself still. The tears dried in his eyes as he focused on listening.

What was out there? Was it an animal, or someone else in the woods?

Maybe it's a monster... he thought inevitably. Well, if it was that, then there was no choice to fight, he decided. No matter how scared he was.

"C- come out, monster!" He steadied his voice and let it taper out into a little war cry. "I'm not scared of you!"

If Saentiel had been scared before, he was absolutely terrified now. All color immediately left his face when he heard the sudden howl. His wings shot outwards, and he wanted to fly far, far away from this place - he knew what that sound had to be! It wasn't a normal wolf. He knew what normal wolves sounded like that. That sounded like a person making a wolf noise, with the same fluctuations in the howl that someone speaking would have.

Which meant that the howl could have only come from one thing.

A werewolf.

How was someone supposed to fight off a werewolf!? Was there even a way to? Werewolves were big and powerful and could rip him to shreds in a heartbeat! He vaguely remembered that werewolves wouldn't really have any lasting effect on an angel, but he was far too frightened to pay any attention to that key piece of knowledge.

He needed a stake-no, wait, that was for vampires. What about holy water? Would do that anything? Or was that just for demons? And what about that song-no, that was for him, something he could use to tell if someone was an angel. He gulped. He had no idea what someone was supposed to use on a werewolf!

And, to make matters worse, there was a boy demanding for a monster to come out with a war cry, and, despite sounding close to his age, Saentiel couldn't recognize his voice at all. A strangled noise escaped his lips. That could only mean that the speaker was a human! A human who would be totally terrified of him, and would drag him back to his home and get all the powerful adults to hurt him because they'd think he was a monster!

He took an unsteady breath.

He could do this. He had to do this. He was going to go out there, and he was going to be confident. Maybe make himself more intimidating? He thought over the possibility for a moment, quickly deciding that size would be an ally. Gone were his small proportions; now he was older and taller, at least twenty years old, looking just like one of the older, more powerful angels - someone who saw him would surely know he was an adult, and not mess with him.

And, just to be on the safe side, he made his flaming sword appear, because it looked cool, made him feel safe, and would totally scare away any dangerous human! The fire felt warm to the touch as he grasped the weapon made solely of flames, but it didn't burn him - it was his fire, and was made of his magic.

How many people were in this forest? Yet, the third stranger was different. The third stranger sounded scared, confused, lost. This wasn't some hunter or murderer (well, hopefully) - this was someone in the same predicament as Aegeas. So the otter started struggling against the wolf, trying to slip out of the wolf's grip.

He didn't have to, fortunately enough. A flame burst into life some distance away. The wolf immediately let go and bounded in its direction, darting from tree to tree to get a good luck at the fire. Aegeas took the opportunity to get up and run in the direction of the third stranger. Hopefully they'd be able to protect him.

The little resolve that he had gained during his internal dialogue immediately left him when something came hurrying towards him. He stumbled back into the tree behind him - slamming his head on the lowest hanging branch, which was now lower than his head, due to the sudden height increase - and almost dropped his sword when he started to make out the shape hurrying towards him.

It was the werewolf.

He gave a startled cry, which he quickly hid behind a very manly and completely inconspicuous series of coughs. He straightened. He took a deep breath. He adopted the stance that he had been taught, sword out in front with his legs spread ever so slightly apart. "I'm not afraid of you," he informed the werewolf as it approached, using a deep, masculine voice to sound more powerful and frightening. He hesitated, thought for a moment, and then added, "...Why are you in Heaven? Only angels are supposed to be here."

Taber loved how exciting today had been already. His mom had told him not to go in the forest - she'd said it had just shown up one night, even though everything in that world kinda did - but he hadn't wanted to miss out on the opportunity. New places were always dangerous for a little bit, but they brought new people with new appearances and new personalities. And Taber wasn't going to make friends with everyone if he didn't meet everyone.

So here he was, standing in front of a man with huge wings holding fire in the shape of a sword. The man seemed kinda scared, but that was also just like newcomers. They always calmed down quick enough. At least, that's what his mom said - she didn't let Taber near them. He wasn't sure why. He wished his mom was here; she could see how friendly he was being. Both to that playful otter kid and to this guy.

"What's that place? And what's you?" he said, not sure how to begin to use words like "Heaven" or "angel." It came out in a series of growls and hisses. Sure, he was speaking in another tongue, but it was always more interesting than any human language. The sounds were more soundy, the expressions more expressive. And everyone usually knew what he was talking about.

Sevy let out a shriek as something ran out of the clearing, and he instinctively cowered and threw himself to the ground. It looked like something furry, maybe a bear, or-

"Oh." He peeked up from the leaves, his curiosity getting the better of him, and was able to get a better look at the creature.

It looked like an animal he saw at the zoo, but he couldn't place the name, and it was wearing clothes!

"Oh! You're so cute!" It slipped out of his mouth, and he covered it a moment later, eyes widening.

Oh no! He hated being called cute, and this creature probably did to, and now it would probably get mad at him.

Cute? Cute? He wasn't cute. He was tough. That's why he had that tail, and that's why he could swim so well, and that's why he kinda knew how to use a sword (if sticks counted as swords).

On the other hand, he wasn't tough enough to not walk up to the winged stranger and cling onto his shirt for dear life.

"Hey.." Sevy's eyes widened as the- otter!! that's what he was!- the otter clung to him.

He hadn't had time to think about it, but maybe the stranger was just as scared as Sevy was- or even more scared. He reached out a hand and rubbed the otter's head in a way that he hoped was reassuring.

"It's okay." he whispered. "Don't be scared. I was only scared because I thought you were a monster, but you aren't, and there isn't anything to be afraid of, so it's okay, see?"

The werewolf wasn’t attacking him.

It - he? - was just standing, looking up at him and his sword with big eyes as it made a series of noises at him. His posture relaxed. This werewolf wasn’t scary at all! The way it was looking at him was peaceful, and he was starting to notice that everything about it seemed little. It was still too soon to tell if the werewolf wasn’t going to harm him, but he felt comforted when he realized one key detail about the person before him: the werewolf was another kid.

His form returned to its original size, and the flaming sword disappeared from his hands. "You're just a kid!" he exclaimed, being more than a little hypocritical due to him also being one.

Spoiler! :
Ciaran Kinnear has appeared! He looks about 7 or 8 with pale skin, dark brown hair and red-brown eyes. Yes, he has adorable tiny little fangs and there's four of them! He's currently wearing a dark-coloured, oversized t-shirt and a pair of black, over-sized socks and not much else. There is a mobile phone in his shirt pocket but he has no idea what that is yet! And yeah, he's a really old vampire. Unfortunately, he's in human-child-mindset rn with a side of hungry, so fair warning.

Ciaran didn't remember seeing this forest before and he definitely wasn't sure how he'd come to be in it. Maybe he'd been playing with the other village children? Maybe he'd been told to stay away? Whatever it was, he was here now and he was gonna explore it. What else were forests for?

He kept wandering through the trees, fiddling with the hem of his shirt and wondering where the rest of his clothes and his shoes had gone. I probably lost them, he thought with a little grimace. Again. Mother's going to scold me for it...

A sound caught his attention. Howling? And screaming... And was that a fire he could see in the distance? Ciaran slowly made his way towards it and hid behind a tree when he saw who was holding the fire. A big man with big wings. Ciaran stared, and then he caught sight of movement below the big man. Was that...? No, it couldn't be! Werewolves didn't exist! his mother had told him that.... And why was he thinking that had been a long time ago?

Ciaran frowned and peeked out from behind the tree, watching the two interact. The wolf-boy seemed...to be trying to talk to the winged man. Angel! That's what the winged man was. He remembered his mother telling him stories about angels.

Suddenly, the winged man shrank down into a child and the sword disappeared.

"You're just a kid!"

Ciaran flinched and pulled back, but unfortunately in doing so, he stepped on a twig. It snapped and Ciaran froze, cringing. That was not how he'd hoped to introduce himself.
