My eyes nearly popped out of my head when the strange man flung a hidden dagger at Everlee.
LOOK-OUT! Poca called, but was too far away to do anything.
Reva jumped in the way, and the dagger hit her in the shoulder. I was behind her, a little ways back, but I still saw the blood seep from the wound.
Reva hit the Doll and he went limp against the ground. But I still shrank back. I slowly walked backward until I bumped into a tree. My mind was whirling.
He tried....to kill Evee... I thought in shock, still trying to convince myself of what just happened. She had been trying to help him, no one expected him to have done that. It was just too fast.
Why...why did he try to kill Evee?! She was trying to help...she always tries to help people! Why would he want to kill her? It just doesn't...make sense... I pressed my fingers to my temples.
You-can expect...that much from-a Doll. Poca spat with disgust.
So much had happened in the past week that I couldn't even think anymore. A while back to what felt like ages ago, that Doll, Raya, betrayed me. My trust nearly got Poca and I killed! I learned I shouldn't trust anyone because of that. Then, I run into this group of Rogues and a few Dolls, and meet Davy. I learned I shouldn't be so quick to judge others and that just because someone looks scary, that isn't really true. (Even though I still felt a little shaky on some people in our group.) It was so great! It was like Heaven had sent me a big brother! Then, suddenly that Fire Rogue came and he and Davy beat each other up! It was okay now...and the Fire Rogue had helped with the fire, but...I still didn't know what to think of him.
Not to mention he says bad words...
Then, this hungry-looking and very sad Rogue girl joins us. I made a side note to myself to say "Hollow!" later.
THEN, a bad guy and Reva fall off a little cliff and into the camp, and he tried to kill Everlee!
Calm-down Sheara. You-need to-sleep.
I sighed and layed down by the fire. Poca was right. I needed to forget about everything and sleep for a little while. I hugged myself in an attempt to shut out the world and closed my eyes. I silently prayed no harm would come to anyone during the night.
...
I was in a metal cage, watching as my friends were picked off one by one by a monster with horrible sharp teeth. I tried to get to them, but I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. All I could do was watch in terror. The only two left were Poca and Davy. Poca had tripped while running away from the monster, and Davy tried to pick her up just as the monster swung a blow to finish them off.
I woke with start, cold sweat beaded over my forehead. Even my dreams didn't feel safe anymore.
With all the fights, cursing, new friends, scary bad guys, and close calls with death, I began to feel very small...like a bug under a shoe...of a big mean guy...that hated bugs...
It's-okay Sheara, it-was just a-dream. Poca tried to comfort.
Just then, the bad Doll grumbled in his sleep. I immediately shot a small tornado under me and launched myself into a tree. I grabbed a high branch with my legs and swung my arms up, clinging to it like an scared upside-down kitten.
Poca gave a surprised yelp at my quick escape. She looked up at me from the ground.
"Sheara! What-are you...doing? Get-down from-there!" I shook my head and gripped the branch tighter.
"Uh-hu. No way. Down there is scary and dangerous! I'm staying here where it's safe."
I heard Poca and some other noises, but I blocked them from my mind. I blocked it all out. The terror, the responsibility, the guilt, the love, the pain, everything. I felt so out of place here...I didn't need anyone to tell me that this was no place for a child. It clearly wasn't.
I suddenly thought of how I must look from the ground. I hoped I hadn't woken anyone up...I didn't want anyone to see me. Frankly, at the moment, I didn't want to exist. They must think I'm so weak...well, I was weak, but I didn't want others to see just how much. I wanted to protect them all...but...I couldn't. I just couldn't. I'm much too...soft and squishy. If I got in the way of any bad guy, they would just flatten me, then continue on hurting the others.
Man...I'm pathetic...but be that as it may, I'm staying here. Here, where it is safe.
First off, you-are...not pathetic. Poca had resolved to speaking to me mentally. And-second off, COME-DOWN!
No. Down there is full of scary people and friends getting hurt. Poca growled.
Don't-make me-come..up-there...
(Sorry for the long post! I started to post, but then other people did too, so I had to change and add things. Shadowlight, I just thought I would open up an opportunity for Sheara and Rayden to have a little bonding moment like you wanted. Feel free to do whatever you wish with this!
