This has been driving me crazy lately. The words "gray" and "grey" are both acceptable... but which one is preferred?

Which one do you like better?

I always thought one was Canadian and the other was American. Apperantly not.

'grey' is the original english spelling.

'gray' is american.

and i don't know about canadian; i always presumed it'd be the same as the american spelling.

so yeah, i'll say 'grey' is my preferred choice.

Actaully, Canadian English is a big mess of American and British, but with spelling we generally use the British.

Yeh, "Grey" is British and "Gray" is American.

If we are argueing which is more correct I would say "grey" was as it is the original spelling. American English is merely a simplified version of UK English.

Apparently it derives from the Middle English form, "Grei" so the "e" spelling would definitely be older.

I have always prefered English grammar to American grammar. Spelling and all.

Bah! English spelling stinks! There is no 'u' anywhere in color.

But I'm with the grey caucus on this issue. Not sure why, but gray just does not look right. Probably for the same reason I spell 'defense' as 'defence' and often spell words that have a 'z' with a 's' instead; the Economist and Financial Times. It's too bad the US does not have any good news mags...

But I will never ever spell color with a 'u.' And women should be spelled wimmin.

Nate, I think you're just labouring under the illusion that spelling is phonetic.

I don't think that any good self-respecting person prefers the american way. All british spelling is better. It's....so...beautiful...*gets all wistful and remembers the anger the felt when teachers took points away on essays he wrote with words like "colour" and "grey" and "theatre"...mmmmmm.
