The rest coming up tomorrow, I happen to be a bit busy today :/
~Lilith
I opened my eyes to soft greenish light. The sheets around me were soft, pillows luring me to let go and lose myself in the oblivion of dreams again, and silent music almost sounded as a lullaby.
"You're awake!"
I moaned. The girl's voice was way too loud for me to handle - I didn't even know my head hurt so much. What happened? I blinked a few times and met the scared glare of the other girl. She was a writer as well, and didn't belong to this world, that much I could tell. I tried recalling her name, but her words cut my thoughts.
"I thought you won't wake up. I thought you've died."
"I haven't," I muttered. Doing my best to sit up, I cried in pain around my ribs. With the sensation came all the memories, and I glanced around looking for Corin.
Oh, wow, I couldn't not think. The tower from the inside was much more beautiful than I imagined it. I never really bothered describing it much, so even if I'd known I'd end up in it, I would never expect to see that; the walls were thick and as if made of dark glass, with something almost moving inside of them, reminding me of the lake itself, and a spiral snake of shelves filled with bottles and papers climbed all the way to the ceiling. I slowly got up, still feeling the other writer glaring at me.
"My name is Anna," she said, and I nodded. "You don't talk much, do you?"
I turned my back to the wall I began to observe, and frowned a little. Talking? I barely ever had anyone to just talk to, unless it was about lying or talking my way out of something.
Back home, there was no one I could have called my friend - and so far, from the examples I've seen, here was neither.
"What are you even doing here?" I finally asked, "weren't you supposed to go with the demon and company?"
"His name is Dusty." She sounded defensive now, even though the guy almost killed us both. I almost smiled - despite of everything, if anyone even tried offending Corin or either of my characters, he would have ended up in scars. "He healed you with some of his blood - it has such powers - but also tied us all together, so, um.. You die if he dies. And he dies if I die."
"And Corin dies if I die," I muttered. Well, now at least it made sense that she was still alive in my villain's tower. "Smart demon you made there."
"Your murderous prince isn't all that better," she replied, and I smiled a little.
With every new word, I liked this girl more - partly, I was sure it was the instinct the streets have given me.
Despite of being younger than her, I felt protective, like I always did towards people who acted scared yet friendly. And she was another writer, and, judging from the way of talking and her appearance, not far from the time period I came from myself.
"Corin isn't a prince," I said. "I'm Lilith, by the way. But I guess you could just call me Cy."
"Great," she answered quickly. "And didn't you say something about his princess before?"
I winced a little. If I hadn't mentioned Kyra, I was pretty sure he would've killed us both. Unless his revenge to the Celetals was more important to him than his revenge to his suddenly mortal and available creator.
"He was in love with a princess," I said. "They, uh, they made her think he died and practically took his magic away from him."
She said nothing, so I turned my back to her, staring at some papers on a shelf. They were dusty and yellow, and it took me a few minutes to realize what I was staring at.
Letters.
I carefully took one out, grimacing to the pain I felt as I lifted my hand, and Anna walked over to look over my shoulder. For a moment, I had to resist the idea to lean my head on her shoulder and just let someone else be the strong one for once.
Then I unfolded the letter and ended up speachless.
Building the bridges it read, doesn't make the river stop flowing. I did everything they told me to, I tried everything you asked me to do, but I can't - I won't - just let go of it. They have no right to order us that, and you know it very well. You said once you don't see me they way they do, you said I'm not your way to power packed in gorgeous dresses and mannered words, so why did you just adhere like that? The gardens are dying without you. The roses won't grow white to anyone else. My father had recovered from Mother's death, and I'm afraid.
What if they send me away?
I took another letter, this one written in darker ink and somewhat sharper handwriting. As I unfolded that one, a dried white rose almost fell out of it.
I can't tell if it will cost me my life, nor if anyone but you will ever read this, but I'm not intending on letting you go. Meet me at the Garden tonight, and bring all the letters you still keep. It's over, my love. Not a thousand-
The flower burst to flames in my hand, and I let both it and the letter fall on the ground, turning around.
Corin was standing in the doorway, his arms crossed on his chest, and there was something in his eyes that reminded me very well of the pain I've felt before.
I hugged myself, wanting to lie down again, and Anna took a step back and hid behind me. Great, thanks, I couldn't not think, but I couldn't blame her either - even with knowing of Corin's abilities, I was scared out of my mind.
Yet I couldn't have kept silent, not seeing the way he glanced at the letters. What the hell have I done?
"You still love her," I whispered. "Don't you?"
He gave me a freezing look for my efforts.
"You have parts of your body that can yet be broken," he muttered. "So watch your tongue."
I shook my head. It was wrong, that wasn't what I wrote, was it? Love wasn't supposed to be driving him. Not any emotion was. Just how many things happened behind my back in my own story?
He slowly walked over to me, picked up the letter and the flower from the ground - they weren't burnt at all, and a moment later I figured he must had just made it an illusion to make me stop reading.
I offered him to take the first letter, Kyra's one, my hand slightly shaking. He looked me in the eyes, and then waved to the wall; it became darker, turning into a mirroring surface, and I could see my reflection in it. I was pale, but not as much as Corin, and both Anna and I looked even more scared and lost than I thought we did. Based on the look on her face, she came to the same conclusion.
"That," Corin whispered, standing behind me and with his hands on my waist - just gentle enough not to hurt, but we both knew he could cause me pain again by just moving a little. "That what you feel right now, that is all you'll have of feelings when it comes to me, little Creator. Don't you fool yourself into believing there's anything more, and don't." He tensed his fingers on my ribs. "Ever." I whined as I felt the pain again, his hands not letting my injuries heal. "Touch anything in the tower again." I felt tears in my eyes again, as strange pain spread through my body as if he replaced my blood with it. If he hadn't been holding me, I was sure I would've fallen.
"Stop it," Anna interrupted, stepping in in the same way I did before with Dusty - she caught Corin's hand, and though he didn't let me go, the pain disappeared. Gasping for air and trying to calm my heart, I shook my head as his eyes locked on Anna's.
"No," I muttered. "Don't hurt her. She had nothing to do with it."
He seemed to be fighting with himself, backing off at the end. Not letting me go, he looked away from Anna.
"One floor under, you will find food," he said to her. "Go get it before I change my mind and lock you in here to starve."
Anna left, giving me a worried look. I tried to smile and show her I'll be alright, but she didn't seem convinced - even I wasn't convinced myself. I had no idea what would happen. He could've brought me as close to death as one can be, hurt me so much to make me beg and cry and do whatever he says, and I was pretty sure we both knew it.
"I'm sorry," I said silently. "I-I won't do it again. Please, just let me go."
He didn't let me go - but he didn't hurt me either. Instead, he turned almost gentle.
"I take it you do know how much you resemble her," he muttered, and I closed my eyes.
Kyra. His beautiful, yet witty and strong princess. She had all the virtues and flaws as myself, and a few more I wished I had. If it ever occurred to me that I might once meet either of them, I would've reconsidered putting all the good things I knew of in one person - Corin could as well use some of the heart Kyra had.
"I wrote her after myself," I confessed. He let me go, and walked away, the wall turning to its usual self again. I couldn't tell what he was thinking of, until je stopped and our eyes met.
Oh no. Please don't ask.
"I want to know," he said, ignoring my untold plead. "Did you write us seeing each other again?"
Biting my lip, I glared back at him. Yes, I did write them seeing each other again - in an ambush on a bridge, where she puts herself in front of him and gets killed, and he then turns Celest to ashes. No matter how much his revenge still meant to him now, however, I was sure he would be happy with the truth.
"You do see each other again," I practically whispered. I was sure he would've said something more, if there wasn't for the demon appearing in between us out of thin air.
