If you was all the fish could say...

I cocked my head slightly. "Now how can I speak to you?" I asked aloud. "I can't even tell if you understand me or not."

The fish burbled, "You?"

I just sighed. "Fins. No way you can write or do sign language. I can't even understand sign language, anyway. Actually, none of use could write, unless there any monkeys I haven't seen." I thought for a moment. "Say you twice is you understand what I'm saying."

Spoiler
I finally have post will on this WHAT?

Kyle / ...

I feel free! I feel alive! I feel...Wind? I looked down and saw a mismatched group of animals far down below.

Below? I looked up and saw clouds. I opened my mouth to speak and all that came out was a "Caw!" I tried again, and it came out as "Hah!"

Once more I tried, and finally it came out as "Hi!"

As soon as I said that, a wall of something blocked my way, and I fell down into the land.

"Yes, you can talk. There's no need to yell." I looked up at her and gulped. "You aren't feeling hungry, are you?"

Her immediate reaction was to feel disgust, but instead she felt a rumble shaking the hollowness in her belly. She subconsciously licked her lips, but then stopped when she realized what she was doing.
I can't eat something that talks, she thought.
"I'm not going to eat you," she said. "But I am hungry."
"we'll fasten it with some safety pins and tape and a dream, and you're good to go, honey."

Ingot/ Fish

The fish was pleased that the cat wanted to speak to her - was she a her? - but she didn't have a solution to their communication problem. Ingot's thoughts were quick and brief and they rarely touched on anything more than her current observations.

"You?" Ingot's happiness hadn't abated much and she could go all day with this one sided conversation without realising that her contributions were much less interesting than the cat's.

"Fins. No way you can write or do sign language. I can't even understand sign language, anyway. Actually, none of us could write, unless there any monkeys I haven't seen." This statement was met with another inquisitive look and then the fish swam once in a circle, trying to show that her fins were useful.

But the cat had a different idea: "Say you twice if you understand what I'm saying."

The fish paused and seemed to think about this - could she say the word twice? She had said it a lot already, but never two quick times in quick succession - was that something she could do?

"You-" the fish said tentatively and then again, "You" and so excited was she by this revelation that it was quickly followed up with a much louder, more excitable: "You!"

"That was three times," the cat said in a slightly bemused tone.

"You you!" Ingot agreed happily.

I think should find someplace to sleep. He yawns and stretches. Over there. I can sleep on one of those beds.

He walks over to large, fluffed up pad where several other animals were sleeping. He gingerly stepped on a pad and laid down. Oh, wow. This is really soft. Maybe just a little nap...

"So you do understand me. Are you sure there isn't anything else you can say?"

The fish cocked it's head at me, and there was a sad undertone to it's next words. "You you."

I sat and thought for a long time. "Can you do this?" I dipped my paw in the water and immediately recoiled. "I liked the water once. Never mind, not that." I traced above the water in the air the letters to spell out, my name is...I thought for a few seconds, realizing I had forgot my name. Night. "You try."

Ingot/ Fish

Night, was that a name? Ingot supposed it must be and she must have forgotten what could constitute a name. But she felt sure that Night was the name which belonged to the sky, when it was dark, when it twinkled like a score of fireflies.

Her turn. Ingot dipped her fin into the water, but it offered little flexibility and her movements were too small to offer much accuracy. So instead she swum in a long straight line and tried to indicate that this was an I. A line, a line, a line for an I! And next swum in a semi circle and then in an o with a monkey's tail. The next o was easy and Ingot happily burbled, "You you!" as she completed it.

The final letter was more difficult, but after some swimming, the fish thought she'd made it clear enough and turned back to the fur covered creature.

"Ingot?" Night asked her.

"You you," the fish agreed.

"That's not an animal name," Night mused slowly.

"You?" Ingot tipped her head to one side.

Poor fish. I couldn't imagine only being able to say one word. It was so restricting.
"This isn't the best way to communicate, but it will have to do. Can you remember anything of your life before, even if it's just scattered bits and pieces?" I paused for an answer.

"You you."

"I thought so. I can just remember a few scenes. The more I think about it, though, the more I miss the home I can barely remember. This place isn't so bad, but I think I had a family, friends, pets, back home. What about you? Do you like it here, or do you want to be...whatever we were again?"
