As I walked into class most people quieted down except for one.
"Why haven't you been fired yet?" some girl said smarmily.
This sets other students off. "Yeah, you killed a student! You're a murderer! You side with vamps!"
I calmly reply, "I killed Heike because she was harming other students, it didn't look like anyone else would intervene, and I had no choice."
"They aren't students, they're vamps!" One bigot shouts, but I seem to have not even have heard him.
"As I was saying, I killed them either in self-defense or to protect my students." I repeated.
The same person cried out, "Heike was your student too!"
I walked up one her. She pulled back in her seat as if she was trying to get away from me. "Yes, she was my student. She also tried to shove a knife through my heart."
The look of shock on her face was priceless. "Bet you didn't know that, did you?"
She swallows and shakes her hand. "And I bet you didn't know that Heike's the reason Raven's in a wheelchair."
Her eyes popped wide. I walked back to the front of the class and turned to look at them.
"If you wanna judge make sure you have the whole story." I stared her down. "And about those 'vamps' you hate so much, they were out there trying to defend all of you ungrateful brats."
They didn't have anything to say about that. Except that one girl. "Why are you defending them?"
"Why would anyone defend a a woman being beaten by her husband?" I counter. "I do it because it's the right thing to do regardless of whether she's Muslim or a vampire."
"But-"
"I've explained time and time again I don't judge or discriminate, so don't ask me questions you should already know the answers to." I interrupt.
She opened her mouth again. Ugh. "But-
"End of discussion. Now."
As I begin the lesson I still hear whispers. "If you don't quiet down now I'll have you all write a five page essay on Zeus and his roll as king of olympus."
They shut up pretty fast. I smile. "Now, turn to chapter three in your books."
It was quiet for most of the class until kids started whispering again. Trinity blew up.
"If anyone has anything to say, why don't you come say it to my face and we'll see how it ends for you!" she growls.
I walk over and put a hand on her shoulder. "Trinity, calm down."
"No!" she screams and moves my hand off her shoulder. ""I won't calm down! If you were in my shoes, would you?"
Before I can answer, she bolts from class without warning. Steve tried to follow, but I stop him. "Give her a chance to cool down and think for a while."
And to answer her question, I don't know if I could. Would you?
