Suddenly, Ares jumps through Gem's hole, this giant hammer cocked behind his head. Rose and I open fire, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Soon, I'm out of bullets, and I roll out of the way as Ares barrels past.
I pop up again next to Rose. Ares had missed Gem with the hammer, but he had spun around for another swing.
"Man, where's a high-powered rifle when you need one?" I muttered. I grabbed my longbow and nocked an arrow. It would have to do for now. It could do a lot of damage at close range, actually--on a good day, I could create over a hundred twenty pounds of thrust with this thing.
"Gem, look out!" I shouted. I loosed the arrow, which hit Ares right in the side of the knee. His knee buckled, but he just got up and kept going, as if the arrow was more of an annoyance. This guy must have had bones of steel, or something.
