Need...To Get...In...The Groove!

So, I've become determined to write a science-fiction. I've found a great topic to associate with said sci-fi (mainly because this particular topic and science-fiction are completely unrelated), but I need...some background inspiration.

What music should I listen to while writing? None of my music feels very good for dealing with science-fiction. (Also, it contains some fantasy elements.)

Two words:

Pink.
Floyd.

or alternatively, two better words:

Dream.
Theater.

Both bands have long instrumental sections that are easy to get lost in and let ideas flow through, but for Sci-Fi I'd go with Dream Theater, just because their music is more representative of sci-fi than Floyd's.

[Note: it works for me, but it may not work for everybody. ]

Trance is cool.

I'd also recommend the Dandy Warhols and Muse.

What exactly kind of music are you looking for?

A quick tempo, such as Hard Rock or Metal will provide, or a more tranquel background?

Perhaps a tranquel background but some zip in it?

I listen to a wide range of music genres when I'm writing such as metal, soft and hard rock, and pop. Some bands I listen too when writing - Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, Metallica, Billy Joel, Celine Dion and a bunch of others, lol.

It just depends on the mood I'm in, and not nessassrily what the current mood is in the scene of the story.

Often times though, I don't listen to music at all, which is hard. I've made it a horrible habit to write while listening to music. Still, without the headphones, you might be amazed what spurs from your fingertips without the influence. Some of my best paragraphs were written without music; it's also worth a shot.

Yeah, you ve got to choose the right genre for the scene you are righting, like a harsh battle might be as fishr said, some metal or hard music.

You might try some instrumental music (I mean, completely instrumental). I find when I write to music with lyrics I get distracted more easily, and hearing the timbres of the instruments can actually help the emotions come out even more. Especially classical music.

Generalizing way too much:

Mozart or Haydn for happy

Bartok or Shostakovich for chaos or anger

Dvorak for serene or meditative

Chopin for reflective or a bit depressed.

Or just pick some quiet, fairly static, unchanging music that will give inspiration, but won't interfere too much with your thoughts.

When in doubt, Enigma is usually good. Pure Moods is one of their best CDs; very uplifting and for me, inspirational.

Try techno and classical. Or just a mixture of music you like and don't like.

Or how about technified classical remixes! There are some good websites out there for that kind of thing.
