Gray or Grey?

I'm no expert, but some of the spellings (which are not entirely phonetic as we would wish our language to be) may also be remnants of French spelling, since English was originally formed by combining Anglo-Saxon and French.

But I'm with the grey caucus on this issue. Not sure why, but gray just does not look right. Probably for the same reason I spell 'defense' as 'defence' and often spell words that have a 'z' with a 's' instead; the Economist and Financial Times. It's too bad the US does not have any good news mags...

But I will never ever spell color with a 'u.' And women should be spelled wimmin.

I have to go with you here. I mean, I love the simplicity of American spelling (after all, remember, we *were* the ones who came up with the dictionary!) but yet... gray just doesn't look right to me, and the more I think about word choicing and everything, it just appears to be more awkward.

How about this Gray for a name of someone and Grey as the colour, cause Gray like this looks better as a name of someone. Then both parties win.

What? That's just plain wrong.

Technically the first "dictionary" is thousands of years old.

If we are talking about modern accepted versions, Samuel Johnson's dictionary in 1755 (before America properly existed ...) came way before Webster's of 1806.

I live in America, but use a combination of British and American spelling. I use "grey", but not "colour" "armour" or anything of that sort. But I do spell defence "defence" and that sort of thing. What can I say, I'm weird.

I actually use both gray and grey.

I've always been taught to use 'gray' by teachers. It's automatic for me to spell it this way when I'm typing.

Grey<= Too awkward to use, let alone typing it.
