The story takes place in a place in Japan called Academy City. This city is filled with hundreds of schools, and more than 80% of its population are students. These are no ordinary schools, however, and neither are its students. This city's sole purpose is the training of a person's psychic powers, and every student is either an esper, also known as an ability user, or someone who wants to be one.

Each student is assigned a number from 0 to 5 that represents the degree of their power, with 0 being ability-less and 5 being the strongest in the entire city, to which there are currently only 7 students. The abilities in question range from many types, from telekinesis, teleportation, and telepathy to manipulating physics and controlling the various elements that make up our planet.

You are one such student in this futuristic city. Now choose; Who are you, and what is your power?

Character Profile

Name: (First name/Last name)
Gender:
Age: (15-20)
Appearance:
History:
Personality:
Ability: (Please, nothing too crazy)
Power Level: (0-3)

Your character cannot be any level higher than 3. Levels 4 and 5 are reserved for NPCs and other important plot figures. We don't want any Mary Sues, right? :D

The plot will be revealed as the story goes on, just so things can stay interesting. Fear not, I have a solid idea of where I want to take this story. I made sure to think of one before posting.

Name: Caitriona (Cait) Lowry

Gender: female

Age: 16

Appearance: A classic celt - a little on the short and petite side, but she has a cute build. Her hair is blonde, naturally wavy, and hangs just barely to her shoulders, but she usually flat-irons it straight. She has green eyes.

History: Before coming to the Academy, Cait performed on stage in many of her hometown's musicals and folklores, at first as a chorus girl. She gradually worked her way up through the ranks, as the directors discovered more and more of her range. By the time she was thirteen, she was taking on the highest soprano roles. However, on her fourteen birthday, she had the performance that changed her life: while singing, she caused a gust of wind to rip through the auditorium, breaking glass and dislodging people from their seats. Cait ran away then, not telling anyone where she was going. She arrived at the Academy a month later, and has lived here since.

Personality: She looks innocent and sweet, but she's really flirtacious and active. Yes, she is sweet, but only genuinely so toward those she really cares about.

Ability: Aerokinesis (manipulating wind)

Power Level: I'd have to say an upper 2, just because of the training she has had through voice - and her primary weapon is her voice.

History: She came to Academy City at the age of 12. She had a dream one night that she will study in that school, and it happened. Most people call her a psycho, because she can predict a lot of things (she's not using her powers when predicting).

Personality: She's kind and calm, always in the eye of a storm. She's always minding her own business, and she's not that sociable. But she's hoping for a lot of friends here in Academy City.

Ability: Precognition (future sight)

Power Level: Level 1 maybe, since she can't control her powers that much and it only shows in her dreams or occasionally, something like that. She can't see the future over a long period of time; her ability is limited. Her power also give her a lot of headaches.

It's fixed now.

My friend is going to join soon, so once she posts her character profile we'll start.

On a side note, is my character going to be the only male character? It's fine, though. I can always bring in other male characters to even out the ratio.

Name: Takeo Saitou
Gender: male
Age: 18
Appearance: Thinks he's cool because he has red in his hair, likes to wear the uniform inside out.

History: Grew up with his younger brother and family in a nice town. Takeo discovered his power at the age of nine. Nothing spectacular, he simply couldn't be bothered to get out of his chair but needed a pen. He stared at one, resigned himself to go and get it and then it hit him in the face.
Personality: A bit of a jerk in all honesty. Taki has a pretty good grip on his power which of course makes him cool and desirable. Or so he thinks. He acts cocky and flirty and generally doesn't take other people's feelings into consideration.
Ability: Telekinesis
Power Level: 3

(Now that everyone is here, we can start. Right now just worry about establishing your characters. I'll move into the plot when I feel we're ready.)

Ren woke up to the blare of his alarm clock. He rolled over in his bed to look at it. It was 7:00 in the morning, only an hour before school started. He moaned when he realized what day it was; March 16th, exam day.

Exam day in Academy City meant something much different than it did for schools in the rest of the world. Exam day is when every school in Academy City holds a series of tests to measure every student's ability. The tests in question were different for each student depending on what their ability was. For Ren, it meant trying to melt a piece of metal for the entire day.

Ren got dressed and grabbed something out of the fridge real quick before walking out the door of his apartment. On his way out he almost tripped over one of the cleaning robots, which looked like a moving garbage can. The robots did their job well, almost too well. One time Ren dropped his keys when he was trying to get into his apartment, and before he could pick them up one of the cleaners swept it up. It was against the law to damage the cleaning robots in anyway, so he had to spend three hours trying to convince management to give him another key.

Ren went to the nearest bus stop, which was right beside one of the city's electric windmills. Academy City's main source of power came from the wind, so these tall towers with rotating blades were scattered all over the city like weeds in a garden. As he waited for the bus he noticed some other students approaching the stop. From the looks on their faces they didn't seem to excited about the tests today either.

The alarm went off... i groaned. Exam day, blah. That meant i had to push my limits, got knocked out, then sent to the nurses office until i woke up. That will happen about, six times. At least by the end of the day i'll be able to go ten more feet without dropping unconscious. I quickly got dressed, unfortunately it was laundry day, so that meant i was stuck wearing the dreaded skirt my father insisted i buy.

I stumbled out the door. My alarm had gone off late, so i would have to eat later. As soon as i locked the door i teleported outside to the bus stop. I like riding the bus, it was a chance to talk with people before school. The bus pulled up, i was thrilled. I was still dizzy from teleporting. So i stumbled onto the bus.

Ayaka

I sat on my bed, ignoring my throbbing headache. Another dream, I thought, rubbing my forehead. I checked the clock on my bedside table. It's 5:00 in the morning, and for me, it's still freaking early. Deciding I have a lot of time left before those stupid exams, I lie down on my pillow, and closed my eyes. Unfortunately, I can't sleep. I roll over, thinking about the dream I had: exams.

I shook the thought away. Well, those exams give me a more painful headache, and I don't want to think about them. Whoever thought about giving exams to students in Academy City? What a bad idea. At least, I'm getting better and better in controlling my power, and I'd be able to foresee the more of the future. I spent my extra time preparing myself for the day. By seven, I'd be at the bus stop on my way to Academy City.

I'm not that worried, though, thanks to my dream.

I rolled over and stared at the digital clock on my nightstand. The digital numbers read 6:45 and my alarm went off at 7. Sighing, I sat up and looked at the calendar on my wall, March 16. Exam Day, oh the joy, I got to spend a whole day just moving water from one place to another. Getting up I turned off my alarm, and got ready for the day.

Walking down the stairs of my small one-person apartment, I noticed that the place seemed kind of dirty. I really had to get that cleaning robot fixed. A couple days ago I had accidentally dropped something, not really sure what is was, on the floor. The cleaning robot sucked it up. Now it is jammed and stopped working completely. Oh well, a little cleaning won’t do me any harm, I guess.

Walking over to my cabinet I grabbed something quick to eat, got my stuff and walked out the door to go to the bus. I silently stepped right behind the two other students, right as the bus pulled in.

Ren watched through his sunglasses as students showed up at the bus stop one-by-one. He recognised a couple of them, including the girl who teleported right beside him, because he had seen them at the bus stop every morning since the year started. He had never talked to them before, but he knew their names by overhearing them and their friends talking to each other.

Bianca he knew had the power to teleport, quite obviously because it was the method she used to get to the bus stop every morning. Lene and Ayaka, however, he did not know what their powers were. He remembered one of them saying something about controlling water, but his memory was too hazy to recall.

When the bus showed up he climbed on and paid the fare, moving to the back of the bus. He wasn't looking forward to his test. For pyrokinetics the test wasn't simply about their ability to melt the metal, but rather how long it takes them to melt the entire thing. It took almost no time at all for a level 3 or 4 pyrokinetic to melt it, but for Ren it usually took all day.

The average melting point of iron was around 1200 degrees, and the limit of how hot Ren could make his fire was around 500 degrees. So, he had to stay longer than others and keep at it, slowly raising the temperature until the iron melted. During the exam four months ago he ended up staying after school for two hours and came home with blister-covered hands. At least this time he was smart enough to bring a pair of work gloves to give his hands a little protection from the heat.

(Now's your chance to have some of your characters introduce themselves to each other.)
