Ren

Ren was the first to get up the next morning. When he had gone to bed he forgot to close the curtains in the living room, so the light of the sun woke him up. He looked up at the wall-mounted clock above the T.V. and noticed they had fourty-five minutes before school started.

"That's right, today's the last day of school," Ren said to himself. Thanks to all the chaos they've been through these past few days they hadn't been able to get to school. He figured the teachers wouldn't be too hard on them for missing a few days. After all it was the last week of school, most of the students were skipping anyway. He was somewhat glad this whole mess started so close to the end of the school year. Unfortunately it meant their summer vacation would be spent helping the Necessarius find this new orb, as well has take back the one that was stolen from them while everyone else was free to party and go to the beach. But at least it meant they wouldn't have to worry about keeping track of two schedules at once, putting their lives on the line for these orbs while still trying to find time to do homework.

Ren let out a groan when he realised they would still have to do homework regardless. On the last day of school their homeroom teachers give them a huge assignment that they have to finish over the summer and have ready for the first day of school next year. Last year Ren had to do a twenty-page report on the methods used to develop esper abilities, and he had to compare the pros and cons of every one. He had been smart and got started on it on the first day of summer vacation, but it still ended up taking two weeks out of his life. Having to deal with Necessarius and homework at the same time meant the only spare time he could get would be spent sleeping.

No point in worrying about it now, Ren thought. I'll find a way to deal with it when I'm actually given the work. He got off the couch and stretched for a moment before going over to Cait's room. He knocked on the door and asked, "Cait, are you awake?" The girl answered with a tired moan. He opened the door and entered her dark room. She let out a groan of protest when he opened her curtains. "We need to get ready for school, Cait," he said.

She pulled her blanket up over her head. "Do we have to? It's the last day, no one's going to care if we show up."

"Our teachers will be assigning our summer homework today, we need to show up or we'll get in trouble. Once school is finished today we can come back and you can go back to sleep."

"All right, I'm getting up," Cait said with an exasperated huff as she sat upright. They spent the next few minutes getting ready and grabbing a quick bite to eat. They stopped by Ren's dorm to pick up his school stuff before heading to the bus stop.

When they arrived the bus had just shown up at the stop. They managed to get on with Taki just before it left. "Where's Lena?" Ren asked as the three of them found a place to sit.

Takeo shrugged. "I dunno, I guess she must have slept in or something." He motioned them to move closer before whispering, "I think I've found the second orb."

Both Ren and Cait's eyes went wide. "You did? Where is it?" Ren asked, surprised that they had found it so quickly.

He nodded his head toward the back of the bus. "Bianca and that other girl were talking about it before the bus got here. I got a chance to look at it and it looks like it's the Virgo stone."

Takeo

The group fell silent for a little while as they observed Bianca who was sitting near the front of he bus. She didn't seem to be holding the stone anymore, but the idea of her walking around with it openly freaked Taki out. She'd get hurt. And he didn't want that to happen. It reminded him of when he'd helped her get her bag off that mugger, way back when life was just a little less crazy. Would she believe them if they told her what had happened? Should they involve her?

"Maybe I should just try to steal it," Takeo suggested.

"Wouldn't that be too obvious? I mean, they're probably watching us so if people started talking about you stealing an orb from another class-mate-" Ren let the sentence trail off.

"Hey, I'm not going to let her see me steal it. I'll be careful. She sits in front of me second period, I can just levitate it out of her bag or something, and into mine."

(It took a while, but I'm glad to see you back and posting with us Kitty. :D Don't forget, Takeo has to go in and explain why he missed his re-test.)

Ren

"Let me try something first," Ren said before getting out of his seat and approaching Bianca and the other girl's seat. The seat behind the two girls was empty, so he slid in and rested his elbows on the back of the seat in front of him. "Hey," he said with as friendly a tone as he could muster.

The two girls looked up at him. Bianca smiled when she saw his face. "Hey Ren. I didn't see you come to school the past two days."

"I had some personal issues to take care of," he said before shifting the conversation. "I heard you two talking about an orb."

Bianca shrugged. "It's just some antique that Sky found," she said, jerking a thumb toward the other girl.

"An antique, huh?" Kai said, his voice filled with interest. "Mind if I see it?"

"Sure," Sky said before reaching into her backpack and pulling out a blue orb with the virgo sign on it.

Ren couldn't stop his eyes from going wide. Takeo was right, it was the virgo stone, and it was right in front of his eyes. It can't be this simple, can it? he thought. There was only one way to find out if it was real or not. He decided to take a chance. Clearning his throut, he said, "Mind if I have a closer look at it?"

"Sure," Sky said as she handed the orb to him. The moment it touched his fingers the stone began to glow. Sky's eyes lit up with wonder, while Bianca's face shifted into shock.

Feigning ignorance, Ren said, "Is it supposed to do that?"

"Hell, that old man was telling the truth!" Bianca said with disbelief.

"He said it would only react to a certain person," Sky said, still awestruck. Her eyes moved from the orb to Ren's face. "This orb was meant for your!"

Again, feigning ignorance, Ren asked, "What do you mean?"

"I'm not sure, but I think you were meant to have that thing." She hesitated a moment, the added, "I think you should keep it."

It was Ren's turn to be surprised now. "Just like that?"

Sky nodded as the bus came to a stop at its destination. "Well, there's the school," Sky said as she got out of her seat. "I guess we'll see you later, Ren."

Bianca was starting to get out of her seat as Sky made her way to the door, but Ren took a chance and put a hand on her shoulder, keeping her seated. Bianca gave Ren an odd look and was about to say something, but stopped when she noticed the seriousness in his eyes. "Ren, what's wrong."

"Bianca, promise me you and Sky won't tell anyone about this orb. I can't tell you why, but it's for your own safety." She was about to open her mouth again, to protest most likely, but Ren cut her off. "Please, it's important. I don't want anyone else to be put into danger."

Bianca stared at him a moment longer, studying the pleading nature of his gaze. All she could do was nod and say, "All right."

Ren took his hand off her shoulder to let her go and watched her get off the bus. As Cait and Taki came over he quickly hid the stone into his own back before facing them. "We've got it," he told them.

(This storybook has been dead for a few months now, despite my efforts to the contrary. Even if it was still going the characters are so tightly invested into the plot that I don't think we'd have enough room for another person. Sorry, but unless you can talk to the rest of the people who had been posting with me and get them to start again I don't think this storybook is ever coming back to life again, which makes me a little sad to tell you the truth.)

Maybe what most people wanted wasn't immortality and fame, but the reassurance that their existence had meant something. No matter how long... or how brief. Maybe being eternal meant becoming a story worth telling.
