The Faerie Dances

I keep discovering pleasant surprises on YWS! I happened to have a few sketchbooks in my collection, but i consider sketching as a hobby that helps me with my writing. nonetheless it would be great to have some feedback on them!

ive seen a few sketches around here, and im glad that im not the only one who's a victim to the scanner! forgive the quality of the images.

This picture is really pretty!
You draw the body beautifully and the very long legs make the drawing seem unreal (Like a faerie.)

I love this!! Mainly because I love wings. I'll stick wings on anything, even a cat. But faeries are so orignal and exotic, like this one! It has this aura to it...
Back to the point! My only problem were the arms. They seem a little flat. The body and legs are skillfully shaded and it makes them look almost like they are popping off the paper, but the arms just kind of are there. There really isn't much shading or life-likeness to them, like you were in a hurry just to get them on there. But other than that This was... Amazing!

I think you've gotten to a really good start, but I definitely think the drawing a rich, primal quality to it.

For starters, you should always make sure that you're shading dark enough! Even though it make look fine, once you scan/photograph the picture, things can get a little off. It would be a good idea to outline whatever you drew in black pen.

Oh, and speaking of photographs, I shouldn't be able to see anything that isn't picture. I see you've set it on a table, and it's good that it's nice and flat! Sometimes you can't always avoid that stuff when you take the picture, so when you put them on the computer, crop 'em out in an editing software like photobucket or flickr before you post them.

As for the actual drawing, I can't tell what style you're trying to capture. It looks like you were aiming for realistic, but it comes off as more cartoon-y.

Zebra, I laughed at your fascination with wings! i get you about the arms. guilty I think I was so pleased that the finger proportions were right that I just backed away slowly after that, too afraid to touch those again! I'll see what I can do.

Elinor, you had a lot of valuable points. the style I was going for was cartoon-ish I guess, but I don't really think in terms of styles when I draw. I have three "styles" - drawings from my head (like the Faerie), drawings from real life or photos, and imitations of other artists' digital art. I have a secret fear of pens and a milder fear of pencil colours. basically if I can't erase it, I run a mile! so I will have to try overcome that fear to darken the lines.

You caught me! Wings are amazing But I see what you mean with the fingers, hands are very difficult to draw. I'll have to post a few of my winged hearts to express my obsession with wings... And don't be afraid of darkening it! Add the shading slowly, gradually making it darker, it helps a lot! Gradually shading it makes it easier to control where it gets darker and erasing it is a tiny bit easier because you can just erase the places where its too dark and you want to make it lighter! Beware of smudges though! Always use a clean eraser!

Hey, this is the review you requested. I will try to review more of yours. I'm thrilled to see so much to review! Okay, I think it is very pretty. I especially like the water drops at the tips of her wings. One thing to work on though:the eyes. When I first looked at it, it looked scary like a monster. Fill in the eyes and it will look very cute! Overall, this is pretty good!

oh dear... haha! ok maybe its not that clear without the colour, but her eyes are closed. she is completely absorbed in the pleasure of dancing. Don't worry, I didn't give her pupil-less eyes! I'll see how I can make the eyelids look more like eyelids

I know what you mean about pen I despise it. To get darker lines it helps to use B pencils if you haven't already. They are pencils with really soft lead so the lines come out darker it helps a lot.
