The year is 2012. Despite the scientific claims that an apocalypse was impossible, it turns out that the Mayans were right. A huge earthquake rippled across the planet. Buildings and mountains crumbled and enormous tidal waves crashed into coastlines around the world. Madagascar, New Zealand, and most of Australia sunk into the ocean, along with many other islands, like Hawaii, Fiji, and the Caribbean. This caused sea levels to rise dramatically. New York and other cities near the oceans were under several hundred feet of water. But that wasn’t all.

The planet was riddled with comets and meteors, wiping out nearly all life on the planet. Multiple volcanic eruptions sent the oceans steaming, vaporizing most of the water. The entire world was covered in a blanket of thick clouds. The eruptions continued, and soon the clouds were impenetrable. Darkness spread over the earth. This also caused a greenhouse effect, and temperatures soared to over a hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Rain fell in amazing quantities, only to disappear into the dead cracked earth. The clouds eventually thinned enough to let the heat escape. Day and night returned to the world, but the sun was never seen, always covered by smog. By this time 98% of the human race had been extinguished.

But there’s still that last 2%.

Now the earth is a barren planet, lifeless. The ground is riddled with ash and trenches, and water and food is scarce.

We are the remaining humans. Will we perish on this dead world, or will we rebuild our nation and start anew? It all depends on us.

Feel free to toss in aliens, demons, or any other awesome plot twists that can make this interesting, just please ask on the DT beforehand to make sure it’s okay with everyone else. :)

On the subject of profiles, I only want people who are willing to post regularly and write decent posts. (Decent being not ignoring anyone, leaving people behind, ect, and long-ish posts. At least a paragraph. Also, I’d really appreciate it if people would actually put some effort into using proper grammar and spelling). So if you want to join write up your profile and post it in the DT. Teddybear22 and I will pick ten characters. This includes our own. You can have up to two, but please note that we may only choose one of them to keep the ratio and character limit fair.

Okay, I'll start us off... :D

Natalie

Natalie trudged through ash that was almost knee-deep. Her younger sister walked a little ways behind, panting.

"Natalie, slow down!"

Natalie looked back. "No. We need to find shelter, Kelsey!"

"We've been walking all day!" Kelsey moaned, "just a little break?"

Natalie shook her head. "C'mon Kelsey, just a little further. I think I see a-" her next words were lost as she let out a startled yell and fell about ten feet into a pit, landing on her back. "Ow..."

Kelsey screamed and fell to her knees next to it. "NATALIE!"

Anton Hinton.

"Ow." Anton was unable to be more eloquent, as something landed on his stomach and the air whooshed out of him. He groaned and pushed it off, assuming that it was a piece of rubble. That was the problem when he kipped in holes; they weren't exactly the safest places.

But then the weight made a sound, and he stilled. There was another sound as well, a screaming, from above.

People, he realised. A girl, next to him in the pit. And someone else above.

The girl next to him was shouting and backing away. He smiled in the half-light.

"Hey, hey, it's ok! I'm not going to hurt you. Hey, you hurt me, right? Landing on my stomach like that! Rude, some people would call it. But I'm kinda happy to see another face right now. Even if said face did hurt my stomach."

The girl stopped shouting so much. His babbling seemed to calm her. God, Anton thought, I hope I don't so too crazy.

"Hey, it's ok!" he shouted up to the person above. "I think I broke her fall!"

Saint Shepper

Saint dug her way through the ashes, her chest heaving from the labor of it all. Her shoulder ached from her wound but she told herself to ignore it, she needed to find shelter somewhere.

The wind blew sending ashes into her jet black hair, and eyes, and mouth. She sputtered and cursed.

"Hey, it's ok!" a sudden voice sounded. "I think I broke her fall!"

She blinked and felt her heart pound. Someone else was alive?!

Saint took off the direction of the voice, digging and thrasing in the ashes. Then she saw her, a small girl, looking slightly pale. "Hey," Saint called running toward her, "hey! Over here!"

The girl looked up at her, she held up a hand. "Wait theres a ho-"

Suddenly the ground fell away from Saint and she fell into the hole. "Hole." The girl finished slowly. Saint groaned and sat up.

Aleksei Moriskova

Fire rained from the sky as Alec stumbled through the long, itchy grass of the plains. His breath came in short, terrified gasps as he searched for his sister's pendant. He ran in straight line, the same route his family had taken to the abandoned bulkhead just minutes before, in the hopes of finding her most prized possession.

This is no use, he thought in a panic. It could be anywhere! Just as Alec turned away to run for shelter and the comfort of his parents' embrace, a blazing meteor turned his everything white as it streamed over his head. He blinked rapidly to recover his vision, but it was too late...

Alec bolted upright with a gasp. His eyes adjusted wildly to the fading gloom of sunset casting shadows on the plain. He moved slowly into a crouching position, trying to take in the entire area in a glance. What had woken him?

He got his answer soon enough in the form of an unnecessarily loud voice speaking rapidly. Alec's heart skipped a beat in fear. He'd had no idea anyone was so close! And there were several of them, by the sounds of it.

He grasped the hilts of the hunting knives at his waist and snapped them out of the sheaths silently. Slowly, slowly, he crept through the tall grasses, thick with gray ash that clung to the roots like dandruff, and made his way down towards the intruders. Whoever they were, they didn't belong...and he was determined to be rid of them.

Finally taking a spot up and to the right of them, he watched--and waited--in silence.

AMBROSE

Amp heard a noise just before him. Was that...a girl's voice?

"Maddie!" He yelled, running towards the sounds. Or at least, he tried to run. The ash was much too thick for him to run at full speed.

He ran as fast as his legs would allow. But really all he did was trudge. His sister had to be alive still. They promised to never leave each other. He said that he would always have her back. And he didn't make weak promises.

A small girl was weeping beside a deep, deep hole. Amp walked closer.

"Natalie!" The girl cried. His heart broke. The small girl reminded him of his younger sister. The poor girl looked so fragile and weak.

"Hey," Amp said, quietly, making himself known. "What's wrong?"

She looked at him wide-eyed. "My sister told me not to trust strangers."

Amp knelt on one knee. "Well I'm Ambrose. Amp for short. What's your name. We won't be strangers then and I can help you."

The girl looked at him curiously. "Kelley," she whispered.

Amp smiled. "Now what's the matter?"

The girl looked down the hole. "My sister's stuck down there. And I don't know what to do. Natalie," she looked so worried.

Amp frowned. "We need to find a way to get her out then," he replied.

Cara Rose-Miller

As Cara's eyelashes fluttered open, the darkening tint to the sky told her that dusk was approaching. Unzipping her sleeping bag, Cara found the night to be surprisingly warm. She took her water bottle out of her knapsack and took a sip.

That was when Cara heard what she recalled to be a voice-or so she thought. It had been nearly seven months since she had last had contact with another human. It was during those seven months that she looked for another, but by this point, she had already lost hope.

I must be dreaming, she thought. But Cara heard the voice again. It was as if someone was screaming for help. Then there was conversation. Conversation!. There was more then one person there!

Cara nearly threw herself out of her sleeping bag, and she left her things behind, knowing that she could come back for them later without the fear of anyone to steal them.

Sure enough, Cara counted five. There was a little girl, about nine years old, three girls about her age-one lying on the ground and coughing-and two strapping, older men. Eager, she ran forward to see what was going. They saw her, but she couldn't think of anything to say. Finally the words came.

Natalie

Natalie blinked at Anton several times, shocked. "I-I'm sorry," she stammered.

The man smiled good-naturedly. "Hey, don't worry about it. My name's Anton." He held out his hand for her to shake.

Natalie eyed him mistrustfully, then slowly and cautiously shook his hand. "Natalie."

She jumped as someone else fell into the hole, hand going to her revolver, which was in an inside pocket of her jacket. "Who are you?"

Kelsey

Kelsey stared at Amp, fear etched onto her face. "H-How?" The poor girl was obviously terrified.

Amp frowned. That was a good question. But as he looked into the innocent girl's face he knew he had to help. She had large doe-like eyes. Just like Maddie.

"Hello!" He called down into the hole. "Hello!"

There was a spaz of coughing and a very worried voice called, "Who's there? Kelsey?"

"She's fine," Ambrose replied. "We need to get you out of there. About how deep is this hole?"

There was a pause. "Around ten feet."

Amp whispered low in his throat. He had to help the girl, but how? Amp frowned.

"Tell me, is this just a cave in in the Earth or does it lead somewhere? Could you walk out or is there no room?"

Natalie

Natalie sighed. "As far as I can see, it's just a hole." She looked at Anton. "Is it a cave?"

Kelsey

Kelsey still looked absolutely terrified. Her heart was thumping hard. After the apocalypse Natalie had been the only person that she had. "W-We have to get her out," she whimpered, "I-I need her." She gave Amp a pleading look. "Please, help her." She looked like she was on the verge of tears.

Cara Rose-Miller

Cara shook her head. "It might be a cave," she said, "But the way I see it, we just go in. We've not nothing to loose, and everything to win. There's a slight possibility-if that is a cave-whatever is down there will lead to something better. And if we die down there, I could care less. I've just been trudging along for the past couple of months."

Wit that she went to stand to by the hole/cave, gesturing for the others to follow. When they seemed skeptic, she added, "Who knows? There might be other survivors down there."

He looked down at the girl beside him. Like a minature Maddie. Living proof that his baby sister might still be out there. Would he let her jump into some unknown hole?

He looked at this new mysterious girl. "No. I'm not going to let her just jump. She's alot smaller than us. I'll find a way to get them out."

He looked around. "We have to find a way to get around all this ash. There has to be some...well, now destroyed city where we can find supplies. I don't want Kelsey or myself to jump down there and just be stuck there waiting for someone else to find us."

In fact, he didn't want to jump for some stranger. He wanted to look for his sister. He needed her like Kelsey seemed to need her sister. Amp swallowed. He knew he was only staying because the girl reminded him of Maddie. He would want someone to help her. Maybe a single good deed was what he needed to do to help find her.

She had to be alive.

"So what do you say?"

Anton Hinton.

Anton shielded his eyes and looked at the people above him and the people in the hole with him.
"You didn't need to jump down, you know," he said in an exasperated voice. "If you'd let me get a word in edgewise I could have told you that there's a simple way out."
He looked at the people above him again. "And no, it doesn't lead to anywhere. It's just a hole."
"A way out?" the girl asked.
Anton grinned happily. "Yep! That's why I was sleeping down here. Well, I was until you fell on me. We just climb up. Obvious, huh?"
