Hi. I'm a Chinese teen who now lives in America! (Long story. Believe me.) My favorite genre to read and write is definitely fan-fiction. But other than that, I like humor, family/friend-based stories, and just the general stuff.

One of my biggest troubles is writing short stories. I just can't do them. If I try, they become these huge, long epic series that I probably can never finish.

That being said, the longer and on-going stories are the type of writing I prefer.

Anyway, this looks like a really cool site. It's pretty big, though...

Thank you Shina for advising me to post a new topic here! :) And big thanks to my bestest friend of all time for showing me this site. :D (You know who you are.)
Fruits Basket totally rocks! If you don't think so, too bad.

Hey there, Lsph99!

I totally know what you mean with the whole short-stories-turning-into-epic-novels thing. It's a problem I have too. (Although, recently I have been trying my hand at short stories. It's really gratifying to be able to finish a story, something I've never managed with a novel before.)

Hope you enjoy the site!
I wrote the above just for you.

hehe, friendship on YWS. Never had it! Well, coming into it at least.

Welcome! I have the same problem with short stories. But, you just have to push yourself. I basically have a conversation in with my mind. Here's how it goes:
"Oh, you're writing a story!"
"Yes, but I think it's going to be a novel."
"Yeah..."
"What?"
"If you turn it into a novel, it will be a stretched out, boring, cliche plot, everyone will think you stink at writing, and you will put shame to Classy's everywhere."

So, a little moral support never hurts!
Hope I didn't freak you out! :D

Hi Lsph99! I'm Hope, nice to meet you :D! So do you have any nicknames you like to be called, or do I get to make one up?

Haha I totally get the whole short story thing...in some ways it can be harder to pack all that you want your story to say into something short.

So I was just stopping bye to say hello, and welcome. And I must ask one random question...what is your favorite kind of chocolate?

Hi, I'm new to this site to. Nice to meet you. I have problems with short stories to. They just expand and expand and the ending never seems to come.

Welcome to YWS!

My problem is that I can't write long stories. I can write simple and short stories, but I don't have the attention span to write longer stories.

Which is something I might try to fix...

Hello and welcome to YWS! My name is Lisa, but you can call me Captain Cutthroat, or Cutthroat. I do not struggle with short stories, but I also do not enjoy writing them too much. I prefer writing novels, although I have yet to finish one. So your best friend showed you YWS, that is so cool. If you haven't noticed, we love to ask the newbies questions. That way we can get to know you better. So would you mind answering a few questions?

1.) What is your favorite color?
2.) What is your biggest pet peeve?
3.) If you could be any kind of ice cream, what flavor would you be and why?
4.) Choose one, Ninjas or Pirates. Choose wisely.
5.) Who is your favorite author?
I am not addicted to reading, I can quit as soon as I finish one more chapter.

Oy! Totally understand about the short stories turned epic novels. So annoying! But still, at least it's fun to write them. :)

Fan fiction, eh? What sorts of things do you have fandom for?

(Also, WELCOME TO YWS! :D)

Whoa! Holy moly, there's a lot of posts here. :)

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who has trouble with the short story thing. (That would be Sureal, Captain, Hope, AM, Snoink, and Writers) And I'm also glad some people have trouble with the opposite: longer stories. (Griffin and Cutthroat, among others) It balances the whole system out!

Yes, the problem with most stories that develop into novels is that they never really end. Like, take Harry Potter. The ending of each book up to the 7th just leads to the next book, and the real 'ending' is just a cliffhanger, where the reader decides what happens next. It's very unfortunate, yes, I know. *sniff*

Thank you, Captain! Haha, that's a very interesting self-conversation you have.

Hope, that really was funny. Haha, randomness...I'd have to say dark chocolate...and you can call me Lsph or anything, really...hehe....

Lisa/Cutthroat: (which one do you like better?) 1) I really don't have a fav color. Mayhaps I could say 'all the colors in the rainbow and beyond'?
2) Biggest pet peeve...hm...ooh, this one's hard...well then, I'd have to say people who keep nagging/bullying me over a long, extensive period of time on purpose and who have no respect for my feelings at all, just trampling me like I'm a piece of dirt. That's my biggest pet peeve. Unfortunately for me, it's happened to me more than once. And nowadays I face it every single day.
3) You have very interesting questions! I'll say that. :P Hm...I'd wanna be choco ice cream, just 'cause it's fun to say choco. Yup. (Also, choco is my fav flavor of ice cream anyway...and you know what choco means, right?)
4) Ninjas or Pirates, eh? Well...I say ninjas! 'Cause they're from awesome Japan...no, that was not sarcasm just now....
5) Fav author, huh? Let's see--probably J.K. Rowling or Natsuki Takaya. Harry Potter series, or the best shojo manga series ever in the world. (Fruits Basket) I choose Furuba! (just another nickname for Fruits Basket; there's also FB)

Snoink--as you might've seen above, I absolutely adore Fruits Basket. La Corda D'Oro is a nice inspiring manga/anime series for those who enjoy music. And Sailor Moon is a pretty cool manga/anime series too, I think. There are these awesome Wii games I have, like a couple Mario games and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. (SSBB for short) Also, I'd love to have Mariokart. Dad's still lookin' for it as a late Christmas present to my lil' sis and I. There's a couple awesome TV shows/cartoons I really like: Teen Titans, Calvin and Hobbes.

Writers, I usually write adventerous stories with a touch of humor and a pinch of romance tucked in it. Also, the general theme of family/friends will always be present. Currently, I've written up a few chapters for my first Furuba fan-fic here; there's also a Sailor Moon fan-fic with about half-a-chapter done, and a La Corda D'Oro story in the workings of my mind. Right now, I'm perusing the idea of getting some game fan-fics done, or maybe the cartoon/TV show things started. Hmm...

Anyway, thank you everyone for welcoming me! I never expected this many replies. And I'm sorry for the extremely long post. xD Thank you again! :D

I have to say, I'm quite liking your story recipe. :D

Hi Lsph! Welcome to YWS! I'm peanut and I can write short and long stories :D (occasionally). It's good to see you like ninjas, I think they are awesome. I wish I could write a fan fic but I think I just like making my own characters. Oh well I hope to see yours on the site. Enough about me, time for you to answer more questions :)

What's your favorite bug?
What's your favorite Pirate word? (I know you like ninjas but you have to have a favorite word)
What's your favorite mythical creature?

PM me if you need anything or just want to talk.

Whoa, there's so many posts here! Anyway, I joined Snoink's Evil Minions group, so no worries there.

Mira--thank you so much for the cookie! I love Oreos and choco chips. :) I would definitely recommend Furuba--it's the best anime/manga series I know of. As of now. :P There's this one orange-haired teenage boy who has quite a bad mouth though...

Peanut--1) My fav bug is...um...probably a ladybug! :smt001
2) Aaarrrrr, mateys! (or something like that...;))
3) Fav mythical creature, eh? Mayhaps it's faeries, mayhaps it's unicorns. I'm goin' with the former. :D

Thank you everyone for welcoming me! I never expected this many replies. Well anyway, thank you again! Once I get my point count up, I'll definitely be givin' gifts like crazy! :)

Oooh! Fruits Basket! A lot of completely awesome writers I know love that manga. And by completely awesome, I mean $%^#ing GENIUS. If you catch my drift. Is it a TV show or comic book or something? I mean, so many people love it so I'm curious as to what it is! Or... you know... I'll just read your fanfic and figure it out from there. It'll probably be genius anyway. XD

And OY. You are part of the epic long series of doom group, aren't you? I kind of made up my own mythology... there's tons of stories and I have NO idea how to write them all down. It's fun to think about.

Evil minion? Mwhahhahaha, excellent. I hope you'll play around with the activities and stuff there! Right now, we're conducting raids on the Poetry Discussion forum... it's quite fantastic! In fact, it's so fantastic that Nate's starting to get suspicious... so definitely participate in that. We love freaking out our lovely admin. :)

Thanks, Snoink! :)

Anyway, Fruits Basket (FB for short) is a Japanese manga series read from right to left. That was not a joke just then. FB's so popular every respectable public library should have it, unless it's just starting up. Every respectable middle thru high school library should have it as well.

FB is a family-centered story about a high school girl who learns about the Sohmas' Zodiac Curse while living with them. (Zodiac refers to the awesome Chinese zodiac! Go China!) It may seem like fun and games at first, but nothing in the Sohma family is that simple....

Anyway, it's also been made into an anime-thing, with all these episodes and stuff going up to the 8th book. (Although in reality there are 23 books) So yes, FB is definitely worth checking out! :D
