Lactrodectus hesperus. The female black widow is a solitary spider that builds its nest in quiet, undisturbed areas. They are not generally aggressive and will only attack a human if provoked (like if someone sat on it.) Though their venom is reportedly 15 times stronger than a rattlesnake's and usually causes localized pain, severe muscular cramps, nausea, and difficulty breathing, the venom is delivered in such small doses that fatalities are rare.
