The lab assistant twitched uncertainly, his hand poised over the door handle of the office. His stomach jerked and twisted uncomfortably as he ran one of his hands nervously across his mouth, wetting his dry lips before finally gathering the courage to enter the room before him. He had seen the room many times, though it never failed to terrify him...
It was the strangest office one could ever see. Every available space was filled with that of cages, all precariously stacked atop each other and stretched towards the ceiling. Rhythmic drips from the water feeders that hung from them created the atmosphere of a beach cave; cold, unpleasant and wet. Every one of the steel cages were home to a creature, animals of various shapes and colours and sizes. The glared at him from behind the bars, retina's flashing an eerie green in the dim lights. Most would expect the room to be noisy from the multitude of animals contained within, but every creature in this room was silent.
There, seated at the back of the room, was a man. To an outsider, he would appear normal. But the assistant knew much more about the man in front of him, and feared his intelligence and what he had accomplished with it. Doctor Arthur Whiteside looked up, as always that foreign flash of insanity in his eyes as he studied his assistant from behind small glasses. Before the assistant could speak of the news, Doctor Whiteside stood and turned away from him, running a hand through his whitening short beard and turning to a cage.
"Animals. Amazing, aren't they?" he murmured, placing a fingertip on one of the bars, dragging it briskly across to make a sharp tinging noise that rang through the room. The assistant shrunk away in the intensity of his stare and nodded, though knowing that his question was rhetorical he muttered an answer in agreement.
Whiteside turned from him, folding one arm across his back as he reached for the latch of a cage, unlocking the thick metal padlock even though the assistant could see the cage only contained a small white rat. Whiteside smiled, dipping his head to the small creature. The assistant almost choked on thin air alone when the rat rose on it's hind legs and imitated the motion, clambering onto Whiteside's up turned palm.
The assitant watched almost transfixed as he set the creature down onto his desk, gazing at it in almost a loving way, but with that same glint of madness.
He turned away from the white rodent and looked at the assistant again. "Take the rat for example. Amazing senses of smell and hearing, small and easily surpassed, not to mention their sharp teeth and ability to swim." The assistant nodded blankly, failing to see what was so amazing about the vermin that sat on the table before him.
Then suddenly, the rat on the table shuddered. It grew and grew, white fur on it's body shedding and being replaced with clothes, limbs lengthening and tail shrinking until a young boy sat on the table in front of the assistant, blinking his beady black eyes and snuffling.
Whiteside laughed hysterically, applauding the boy as the assistant gasped in horror. He was keeping these children in cages.... this was what he had been helping Whiteside with. The shock and terror of it all caused him to jab a finger at the doctor, cold sweat gathering on his brow. "You.... they'll lock you up. Just....J-Just like what you've done to these kids."
The smile vanished from Whiteside's weathered face so swiftly it appeared it had never even been there. "You will regret that." With a clenched jaw, he whispered something so softly that the assistant could only guess what he had said. Then suddenly, another boy appeared in the doorway, shutting it softly behind him. The doctor nodded once as the assistant shook violently in terror. He pivoted slowly, turning to face the cold eyes of the other person in the room, gazing into his inhuman eyes with terror. Then suddenly the boy was not a boy anymore, but a huge snake that raised to be level with the assistant's eyes and hissed, the his scaled neck spreading out into a terrible hood.
The cobra struck in such a terribly fast movement that it took him a few moments to feel the blood trickle down his neck and onto the floor. Within a minute the venom took hold and the assistant met his end on the grimy floors of Whiteside's office, the horror of the doctor's evil deeds still flickering in his eyes as they clouded over with death.
Whiteside eyed the gasping assistant from his full height. He chuckled and seemed unable to stop laughing madly, as he squatted down to level himself with the assistant. He leaned in forward so that he could see the sweat and tears merge on the assistant's face, he let his laughter develop in to insane yells. The cobra observed him quietly from the floor as the terrified rat boy wailed.
"You see?" he cried to the animals, suddenly standing upright and rushing over to one of the walls of cages. The animals, big and small, prey and predator, all shrank back into the back of their small cages. Whiteside, in a rage, began banging his palms against the cages and spit flew from his mouth. "You see what they do! They hate you! They hate me!"
Rage reddened his face as he tossed chairs against the cages, terrible metallic crashes shaking the room as they splintered in an explosion of wood. Some of the cages that had been in more unsteady positions clattered to the floor.
The cobra hissed, slithering backwards as the rat boy wailed and cried louder and louder, tears streaming down his cheeks and soaking his clothes until Whiteside stopped. He shrunk to the ground, curling up into a foetal position on the ground. His hands gripped the few tufts of white hair he had left on his head.
He murmured almost to himself in a pained voice, shaking his head. "They took her away.... we'll make them pay. Make them pay, make them pay."
