He ran in the 2000 election, at least. Here's what happened: The voting ballot was very poorly designed, so a county that was known to be very democratic ended up voting quite a bit for Pat Buchanan, because the arrow pointing to the appropriate punch hole for Al Gore was in between what was actually the appropraite place to punch for Gore and the hole for Pat Buchanan.
There was also an instruction to vote for one person on each page. The presidential candidates were on a...erm...spread, I guess you could call it, on the voting ballot. As a result, many votes were discarded because they had two votes on them.
