Band Geeks

Sorry if the title offends you, but I wear that badge with honor - I'm a flute girl myself. Anyway, I've just noticed that a lot of people post about taking band in school and marching band and stuff like that, so here's our post, fellow band members! (And by band, I mean like a school band - flutes, clarinets, trumpets, saxophones, etc.). I've been playing for nearly 5 years now, and this year I'm starting in marching band, and it's soo fun.

So what do you guys play and what activities are you part of?

Clarinet. Just got back from the last parade of the year (thank you god) the local rodeo parade.. we're forced to go.. and it was HOT! and wool uniforms. Let me see, I've been playing for a little over 5 years, and as a sophomore was 1st chair (not becuase I'm good, but becuase everyone else sucks. Not kidding, either). and yes, we have to wear the title with pride (and make fun of ourselves, least everyone else do it for us).

I've been first chair since I started, but like you said, it's cause everyone else sucks. Private lessons make all the difference!

I play clarinet and bass clarinet.

I can't do clarinet this year though... sad sad stuff. It turns out my Spanish class I want to take is at the same time as band. Therefore, no band. However, I'm still in the other band which means I get to honk out on a bass clarinet. Definitely fun.

Oh yeah, I play in concert band. Or wind symphony, depending on what you want to call it.

Anyway, I play DA FLUTE (and part time piccolo). AND I just learned today that I'm gonna be the flute section leader for the 2005-2006 school year. Woohoo! I'm so excited! So yeah. I play in marching band and concert band, and while I was third chair this year I've been told I'm the best in the section. I believe it too, not to be conceited. It's just that everyone else sucks lol. Seriously.. Only the first four flutes (out of about 12 in our class) got through all 8 scales for our final. It was extremely pathetic. And I was.. either fourth or fifth chair at Silver Lake in the Senior Band. Which reminds me.. Mesh, that's PROOF that you're excellent: you made first chair in Senior band when you would normally have been placed in the JUNIOR band! And you made it there two years in a row. Honestly, woman! Sheesh. I was first chair two years in a row in the Junior Band, but Senior Band was harder and I think he based it more on tone than the Junior Band judge did. My tone is much better now that I have my braces off.

It's so funny.. There's this huge list of "You know you're a band geek when.." and I fit almost all of the descriptions. It's great.

I'm not a band geek, but I hang out with a bunch of them. Like marching_gurl89, who just quit marching band. She played the charinet. Paige plays the trumpet and got 2nd chair Symphony (the second-highest). My friend Audrey who's graduating tomorrow played flute in Wind Ensemble (the highest). Sandra, another friend of me and mg89, is the last one that's actually still in marching band, but I don't know what she plays. Lindsay quit last year, I think she played the trrumpet. Sharon still has a tan from being outside all last summer, even though she quit, and she played the flute. Kathy and Kelsey were both in Varsity Band (the lowest).

Now Marty Hawkins brings a whole new meaning to the word "band geek." He's been going to the Nationals with the high school band since the 7th grade as a prop person (his brother who is graduating was in it). He thinks marching band is the meaning of life. He plays the trombone, and he seriously does not have a life beyond band. Not that you're allowed to if you're in marching band.

EDIT: I forgot my sister's gonna become one too! They can play band in 5th grade, and she's going to play the sax.

Anouther clarinet!!! I've been in Concert band since it started a couple of years ago (my school's into expanding things like music, art and PE recently) and Clarinet Ensemble since it started last year ... there are only three other clarinets not including the teacher. One it undoubtably the worst, but probably only because she is too shy to play properly, another likes to be the best and if she's not will have a tantrum and stop talking to everybody, another is easy going, and plays the bass clarinet too. ANd there's me. I only started learning in year 8 ... and everyone else has been learning longer, but I get either 2nd or 3rd parts in Clarinet Ensemble (the teacher plays first though) and 1st or 2nd (whichever I choose! Aren't I lucky?) in Concert band.
Actually, that's not all that good really. In Clarinet Ensemble, there are usually 4 parts, and the bass clarinet player always gets the bottom one, and the teacher always gets the first. Me and the not so great player play one together. I think the one we get is determined by will the other girl get annoyed if we get the higher part, or will she not mind. So yeah. Not that great then. But still FUN!!!

I miss out on four lessons a week for music, two of those lessons are Science *grins evily*.

My sister plays flute (and I think is one of the best flutes, even though she's the youngest) and my brother plays the sax. So, FAMILY OF BAND GEEKS!!!

Nice! Oh, and niteowl, I don't have a life outside of band either. Well, except for writing. But that's it lol. Everything else is about band.

Anyway, my mom played flute when she was in high school, as did one of her sisters. Her other sister played clarinet, and all three of them plus my grandmother sang. So I'm lucky I got the talent from that side of the family! Otherwise, I'd be doomed to the tone-deafness of my dad's side lol.

For the band I play Trumpet. We travel a lot and we have lots of concerts and of course I am part of it.

I play the saxophone for Concert Band, which is the highest band available here. And I also play the drums and guitar for Jazz Band, which doesn't give you a grade and is just a band made for fun. We had a concert a couple of days ago and it was awesome. I didn't realize all the 6th graders were so good (maybe even better than some of us...*shifty eyes*...)

I play clarinet and I just started Marching Band. I named her Clarice or Clari for short. My clarinet's boyfriend is Curtis the bass clarinet. Cheesy, I know, but fun. I also do Concert Band

My brother plays trumpet though which is cool 'cause I can help him and play his music since our instruments are in the same key... even though his music is deathly easy...

All our bands are for fun ... and I wish I was allowed in the "stage band" (plays loads of jazzy or bluesy music) but clarinets aren't in it *sighs*.
