American Idol in my opinion is a dumb show. But coming from me, every show is a dumb show because I don't really watch TV unless it's just to please someone else (like my mom). But I don't HATE it. There have been worse shows in the past. My family watches it, but not me. However, I must admit, it's rather addictive...

Personally, I reckon these shows are complete you-know-what. Seriously. What kind of image are they promoting here? That unless you have marketable talent or happen to appeal to the masses, you cant sing? Total B.S. There's a definite niche for the unusual and unconventional in any market (as in, people who actually have a unique voice, rather than the mass-produced rubbish that gets churned out daily). During the Renaissance in France, there was an Academy of Arts which dictated the style and techniques artists had to master in order to get work. This resulted in a lot of work that was technically brilliant but inspirationally lacking. Shows like this are doing the same; they're sapping the individuality out of music, turning it into a mass-produced, sterile, just-add-backing art form. I cant stand it! Not to mention the cruelty of the judges. Preparing the contestants for the "real world" is all very well, but Simon is just plain brutal and its not necessary. Although I only caught a few fragments of the whole thing so, you know, I'm no expert, it seems to me that we dont really need encouragment to criticize people like that. What kind of impression must this make on younger viewers? Adolescence is hard enough without "'tweens" being taught that its cool to cut people down.
And if its all a set-up anyway, one has to ask...what the hell is the point?
Honey, it would never work. I've been praying for a "Next Broadway Star!!" or "Metropolitan Opera Idol!" or something, but I know it will never work. Creativity like that is hard to package into a forty minuty show with a million comercials. Besides, would you really wany your art form perverted like this? No, I think it's best there's just one show that exploits both the contestant's and the viewer's hopes and dreams.

there was an opera style idol thing in europe where they looked for an opera star. i didn't watch it, but there was one. in england. so maybe, there'll be one in america next.

I don't know about that...people don't like opera here. Well, at least not most of them.
Actually Qi it's a British production that has been sold around the world. It started here with Pop Idol. We sold it to America along with Simon Cowell.
I know its not origionally fox, the idea that fox would send spotters to the UK and start using a forign show worldwide isn't a new one. theyve been doing it for years.
Opera is actually fairly popular in the States, Chevy, you just have to know where to look. It's a more sophisticated audience, true, that doesn't stop it from being widely popular. Opera albums sell pretty well here.

Yeah, I'll vouch for opera. My dad and I listen to it occasionaly. I was in fact gonna go to Aida, but we couldn't get tickets.
And it's not like American Idol is the first reality tv show the US has stolen. Trading Spaces, What Not to Wear, and almost every house make-over-renevation-bullshit show there has ever been in America came from the UK. Just look at BBC America.
The people on American Idol aren't really very good singers, anyway.

Triple post. Whoops. Anyway, I don't get what's the big deal about hating American Idol. No one is forcing you to watch it. If you don't like it, fine, change the channel. I actually like the singing some of the time, although not as much as the first season. But honestly, I wouldn't buy any of their CD's. I guess it's mostly because I'm not interested in that kind of music, though. But they're not bad singers, you probably just don't like their style. That still doesn't make them bad, though. Heck, if you watched any of the tryouts, you just learn that people think horrible singers sing well, so...
No, they're bad singers. Being able to wail at the top of your lungs does not constitute talent. Most of them are completely technically inept. All okf them won't have a voice by the time they're thirty, because of the way they abuse their vocal chords. It makes me physically ill to listen to it. Really. I already destet pop music.

The audience really should put more thought into their votes. I mean, would you really buy a CD of some unattractive over weight person who can sing? Not trying to be mean because to make it big, you have to be attractive even if the people who voted for you only liked you because you could sing. I too, think the only one who deserved and has actually made it big is Kelly. She's the only one. Clay and Ruben died out fast.
Actually, the person who won Aus Idol last time is overweight or whatever. People still like her. I never actually saw her on the show but I don't see why it would matter though. I agree though, the voting system is pretty screwed-up, I know most of my friends only like the hottest guy on the show.
