Zak looked at me nervously, as if afraid I was going to scold him.
"No way! Lucky..." I muttered, grinning at him. He blinked a few times, staring at me.
"Wait..what?"
"I've always wished to be a necromancer. See, I have some sorcerer in me too, but that's it. Necromancy always sounded cooler than the crap I can do..."
I entered the lunch room reluctantly. I hated the crowds, hated the food and most of all I hated the atmosphere. Students sat in groups; talking, laughing, being friends. That hurt, that hurt so much that I often skipped lunch.
I bought a simple meal and dropped into an empty seat surrounded by other empty seats. Students avoided me, preferring any company or no company to my own. It wasn't just my race or how I acted. It was me.
"Hello again, I didn't catch your name..." Acacia looked up to see Tamaru making her way over with a half eaten lunch. Without waiting for an invitation, she sat down at the table and took another bite.
"I didn't give it," I admitted.
"Yes, I noticed that," Tamaru replied with a light laugh, "but there's always time for change."
"You do realise I'm a Necromancer don't you?"
"You are? Well I suppose that answers my second questions then, I'm a Zodiac shifter. Call me Tama. What should I call you?"
"I'm a Senior, grade twelve," Acacia replied, taking a sip of her coke. Her throat felt dry and she could hardly believe that someone was actually talking to her. And even more unlikely, she was talking back.
"Really? Oh wow, I'm a sophomore. So what do you study?" Tama sounded enthusiastic, her pretty lips arching into a natural smile.
"Dark magic," Acacia said.
"Oh? So what kind of spells can you cast?" Tamaru wondered. Acacia hesitated. She wasn't the type to show off her powers with huge displays but there again, this was the first real conversation she had taken part in for years.
"Well... I can conjure items..." Acacia gave a half hearted wave of her hand that was empty one moment but the next it was holding an athame. This drew the attention of several students before the weapon was placed discreetly upon the table. Tamaru reached towards it, tracing the pattern engraved upon the blade.
"Oh..." Tamaru pulled her finger back and studied the black sparks that had appeared there. They began to recede.
"A warning," Acacia explained. "A summoned blade can be held only by the summonor or a person it is given to." To prove this point, Acacia picked up the blade and passed it across the table. Tamaru held it for a moment and then Acacia waved her hand through the air and the athame vanished.
Seven laughed just a little and glanced back over to Storm, "There isn't a subject I hate more."
She took a quick look at the clock...class was supposed to start five minutes ago and yet the techer wasn't there yet, "Maybe she won't be here and we'll be off the hook today," she stated, turning back to storm.
There were a few other people in the class, but it wasn't a very big class in itself. Just a few others were who sitting quietly, some tapping their feet nervously waiting for ten ofter to come so they could leave if the teacher didn't arrive by then.
Zak and I talked about anything and everything, enjoying each others company, until the bell rang.
"What class do you have next?" I asked, looking at my watch.
"Um...something with Mr. Osentoski?" he asked.
"Oh, Mr. O! I have that too! You'll love his class," I assured him, stopping at my locker to grab my books. Zak's locker turned out to be right next to mine, conveniently.
"What class is it?"
"Advanced world history," I explained. His eyes grew wide at the word 'advanced.' "It's a special class for people like us." I explained, hoping to clear his worry.
She nodded. "Yes, Mr. O is a great teacher. Really fun, too."
"Awesome. My teachers i've had so far haven't been all that great..."
She shut her locker and stepped over to me, propelling me towards a distant hallway. I allowed myself to be led towards the infamous Mr. O's classroom.
Be the cartoon heart. Light a fire, light a spark. Light a fire, flame in my heart. We'll run wild, we'll be glowing in the dark.
I led Zak up to the front, introducing him to Mr. O. After mr. o had everything situated, I took Zak's hand and led him quite forcefully to the empty seat next to me.
I sat next to Bella with a smile and brought out my books for the class as well as a blank note-book. I looked around the rest of the room, saw no one i knew (which was to be expected) and turned back to the teacher who had began talking about the fall of the roman empire...
I only half payed attention, having already learned this. I found my eyes traveling unconsciously to Bella's face...
