Someone in the NaNo 2007 thread asked if there was a thread for telling what our NaNo's are about, and I said I'd make it if no one else had/wanted to, so I'm finally doing that. Tell us:

Code: Select all
Title (temporary or otherwise):
Genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc):
Summary of your NaNo (as much of one as you can give):

You could even go as far as to talk about the main character and what you're most looking forward to when you start writing (if there's a specific scene/chapter), if you know those things yet.

I'll go first, I guess.

Title: Shards of Alaycia
Genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc): Fantasy
Summary of your NaNo (as much of one as you can give): I don't know very much about it right now, and I can blame that mostly on having not done any outlining yet- all I've done is written down some ideas and figured out a basic timeline since it takes place after my Archer's Legend story. I don't plan on starting to outline until around the week of the 22nd, because I'm still trying to finish Archer's Legend.

Right now the main character is nameless, but she was taken to the Alaycian palace when she was around five years old to train to become the Queen's Dream Keeper. She doesn't remember anything about her family, really, and is probably in her twenties now. The queen is Kaliyah (Archer), the main character of Archer's Legend. Beyond that, I really don't know much else. x.x Hopefully once I start outlining (which I'm really tempted to start doing, but I'm NOT going to let myself do so) I'll be able to give more information about it, and even say what scene I'm looking forward to writing the most.

Title (temporary or otherwise): Brevitas (Working Title)
Genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc): Fantasy.
Summary of your NaNo (as much of one as you can give): Well, basically it's about a country (yet to be named) which is teetering on the edge of civil war. It is in the midst of a drought which the majority of the populace blame on the newly emergent telepaths in their midst, and the queen is an incompetent woman who has alienated their potential allies and seems oblivious to the suffering of her people. To make matters worse, the powerful Empire with whom they share a border is eyeing their land and resources and has sent in spies to stir things up in the hopes that they will be able to take over.

The MC’s name is Amara, daughter of the queen, who is extremely patriotic and convinced that she alone can save her country from self-immolation. Accordingly, she kills her mother, frames the murder on her two elder sisters and takes up the throne. The story is essentially about how she goes about saving the country and what she learns along the way.

The part I'm most looking forward to writing? Well, at this stage it's the assassination. I have no idea how she's going to do it, save that it involves daggers and a lot of good acting, but I'm hoping it's going to be a very interesting scene that will reveal a lot about Amara's character.
Got a poem or short story you want me to critique?

Title: Danger de Mort
Genre: Suspense/noir
Summary: There's still a lot to be planned out but it is basically a revenge story. After bringing his lover out of a life of crime, she stabs him the heart (oh yes, literally). After recovering, he seeks her out and the thing she stole from him. It incorporates aspects of Dostoevsky's "The Idiot", but not nearly as philosophical. It is, after all, a revenge story. Prince Lyov wouldn't have it in him to kill. ^_^
Perception is everything.

Title (temporary or otherwise): Their End of the World
Genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc): YA/Literary
Summary of your NaNo (as much of one as you can give): My story is about a family with two sons (Tom, 19. Ethan, 17) and two daughters (Charlotte, 15. Annabell, 13), a mum and a dad. Tom kills himself and it's pretty much about what happens afterwards.

The story mainly follows Ethan, Charlotte and Annabell, all of whom the death effects greatly. Each makes a big mistake or does something they shouldn't have, which leads them to question both their own life and their brothers.
*Don't expect to see me around much in the next couple of weeks. School has started again, and it'll be a couple of weeks before I've settled in. If you've asked me for a critique, you will get it, but not for a little while. Sorry*

Trident, I really cannot wait to read your novel. Promise me you'll post it so that I can admire it's beauty?

Title: Death Machine
Genre: Historical Fiction
Summary: Set in WWII. In the simplest terms, an SS officer working at Auschwitz starts to question whether what he is doing is right or not. It's much, much deeper than that, but I'm horrible at synopsizes. It's a love story, too, in strange ways, and it's also a story about wandering, it seems. Hopefully the novel will actually be more exciting than my summary of it. ^^;

Title: Doves
Genre: Literary Fiction
Summary: It's sort of like The Hours, just not about three women. It's about two pairs of a grandmother and her grandson; one pair lives in Israel during Gulf War, the other lives in San Francisco 2002, both when war starts. Each pair has to deal with their fears. The first pair, in Israel, fears the idea of growing up, especially the grandmother, who fears that her son will eventually become an adult.

The second pair is fighting a fear of mortality and just family fall-apart. She is his guardian, unlike the Israeli pair. The San Francisco grandson has anxiety tantrums, and they are always searching for his long-lost mother.

I have basic themes circulating all over my outline right now, but the two that are probably the most noticeable are that war is bad, and the second is that life never stops.

Title (temporary or otherwise): Objects in Mirror
Genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc): eh... general fiction, I suppose
Summary of your NaNo (as much of one as you can give): basically, one town is trying to eat the other [not literally] and... the specifics are clearer than the generalities, unfortunately. ^_^

Title: [s]Zeitgeist[/s] The Prince of Annemark
Genre: steampunk/urban fantasy
Summary: I'm honestly not entirely sure what's going to happen. It involves [s]a changling, a scholar/dandy,[/s] a bastard son, a dusty old book, a changeling, the prettiest girl they've ever seen, a blind prince ... and Nostradamus's prophecies, among other things.

Title: (I hate titling things before they're written, so it's 'untitled' for now.)
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Summary: The story tracks the budding romance between two college women. The couple soon discovers that this is not the first...or fifth time their souls have met. It will be a modern-day romance filled with clippings of memories of past lives, images from alternate planes of existence, and messages from those who have gone before.

Title: Altus Pennae(Working Title)
Genre: Fantasy/Sci-fi
Summary:After the middle ages, fantasy creatures (dragons, griffins, etc.) went into indefinite hibernation for fear of what humans were beginning to do to the earth. They were originally supposed to awaken when humans went extinct, but...
The year is 2010, and the USA has just tested its first hydrogen-helium fusion bomb. Despite being a test, the bomb causes such a disturbance that it wakes up all fantasy creatures that had been previously hidden from humans. It goes on from there to describe how the creatures cope with the modern world and how the humans react. That's about how far I've gotten with the plot.

Title: Children of Lecraesa
Genre: Fantasy
Summary: Prequel to Flames of Lecraesa. Senzieda Listenzir's far-from-normal life was shattered by the king's violent pursuit and murder of her mysterious aunt, and she is torn between leading the life she imagined and protecting two orphaned children, one of whom is the king's new target. After claiming sanctuary for four months, she embarks on a mission to reunite the last heirs of Lecraesa, placing her at the forefront of a treasonous cause hated by the scarred people of Kalinth who want nothing more to do with fallen Lecraesa. (Arillo, Markus, Gietan, Sophie and Strick are back. ^_^)

This novel is going to be a challenge because of the enormous amount of time it spans - I'll have a lot of gaps where time will just have to pass; however, I'm still really excited. That was a horrible, cliche-sounding summary up above, but, like Flames and Tears, Children is going to be completely character-driven (as there basically is no set plot). How I love dynamic characters. I'll be waiting impatiently for my favorite scene where Senzieda gets to shout, "Look me in the eyes and tell me you don't care!"
