Rocky beaches and cliffs provide slim reprieve
between deadly grass and treacherous sea.
Fog and foam, sand and stone, hull and bone.

When evening's shadow rolls across the prairie,
the ominous rattling whispers in warning:
weed benign in light turns lethal at night.

Stone-paved switchbacks and misty waterfalls
lead to looming manor tall
where fang and claw meet knight and wall.

Draped in endless dusk and cradled by ice,
Ordavin Keep stands sentry over silver mine and settlement.
Is sunless safety worth this price?

Basic Context
Copied from the pad!
Spoiler
-> Ordadus
Many many generations ago, during this fictional planet's middle ages, the peaceful seaside Kingdom of Solimar was conquered. Just before the enemy broke down the fortress walls, King Ordavin took his family, remaining army, and closest subjects, and fled north into the Argen Sea, a notoriously dangerous area that few returned from.

Ordavin's fleet shipwrecked on an island. Many of the survivors soon perished at the hand of the island's bloodweed and other bewildering natural dangers. Eventually, Ordavin and his dwindling crew found safety in the center of the island, where they began building a new settlement which with time would become the new Kingdom of Ordadus. They never made contact with the outside world again for a long, long time.

-> New Solimar
Meanwhile, the descendents of Solimar lived in bitter opression for several generations, harboring their foolish king's abandonment with spite. When these descendents finally had the means to rebuild their new nation, which they called New Solimar, they built it on the foundation of resilience and courage.

-> Gloria Invicta
As the world entered its age of exploration, where ships became bigger and the planet became smaller, Ordadus remained medieval. It was protected from the outside world by its many layers of natural threats, and that's exactly how its rulers liked it. Any explorers who managed to survive the brutal coastline and the bloodweed were dealt with swiftly.

Ordadians were all taught that the outside world equals danger. The arrival of a New Solimar exploration vessel, the Gloria Invicta, however, challenges this long-held belief, and even the current Ordadian ruler Queen Corvinus isn't certain how to proceed. For the first time, these shipwrecked survivors speak the same language as every Ordadian, and it's startling to realize they have a shared history.

One thing's for certain: Queen Corvinus would never in a million years risk letting the New Solimar explorers leave Ordadus. Are they trapped here forever, on an unforgiving island under suppressive rule, stuck in the past? Will they find a way to escape? Will they want to?

Character Relationships
What each character thinks of the others.
Spoiler
FELIX
    Maggie
There will certainly be a great deal of respect there for her. Even though they diverge in their ultimate visions for Ordadus at first, I see them managing to overlook that and team up successfully even before their ideologies begin to shift. Felix will probably learn to look to her as a mentor who was a revolutionary once too, and allow her moral influence to guide him as he figures things out. For providing some growth in return, Felix could be someone Maggie learns to be vulnerable around with her grief-- they share the pain of losing family to this island, and Felix has had more time to overcome it. (Felix having good insight about a difficult emotional matter? It's more likely than you think!)

    Julian
Initially, Felix will have a good deal of scorn for him. He couldn't care less about him trying to steal from nobles, since who is he to judge, but his slimy nature will repulse him. Felix isn't vulnerable to manipulation and recognizes the red flags, so he's in no real danger-- although Sabina is a different story. If we go that route, Felix will be very defensive/protective of Sabina and push back fiercely against Julian's attempts to take advantage of her, and the two of them will clash frequently. It wouldn't be until Julian's growth and proof of sincere love that Felix could recognize the two of them might be good for each other, back down, acknowledge Sabina's own choice, and extend an olive branch to Julian.

Felix doesn't really need a father figure and has never actually wished for one, and I'm not sure we'd see stepfather-son bonding over the course of this roleplay if we took this path, but by the end I could see their relationship being set up such that it shows they're willing to give this family thing a shot (and such that if we were to somehow peek at everyone's lives a few years down the line after the end, we'd see they'd have settled into those roles). If Julian chooses to be with Sabina, caring for Felix is part of the package deal, and they both might find themselves building affection beyond tolerance of each other.

    Aurelia
Felix is definitely going to be mad about the betrayal, but he surprises himself by being more understanding than he expects. There's nothing personal about it, and he can't reproach her for doing what it takes to get by, especially when he was once that poor himself. Still, he's going to be slow to trust again-- which is why when he realizes he's going to need her help to make plans work, he won't be thrilled. Her gradual willingness will not go unnoticed, however, and Felix will learn to give second chances.

MAGGIE
    Emil:
Pre-shipwreck, Maggie will find Emil entertaining, if a bit annoying. But she puts up with the pretentiousness because she's enjoying the adventure, and he's adding a colorful flair to the whole thing. He's also is good at asking questions, and like any older person, Maggie is happy to tell stories and talk politics.

I could see her talking with family about him later like "get a load of this guy - have you talked with him yet? he's a hoot" while also being passively judgemental
When Emil is one of the only survivors of the wreck, it's the ultimate mark of fate's cruelty. This useless annoying foreigner survived when her son didn't. (A lot of this is a projection of her own survivor's guilt, too.)

It'll take a while, but Emil will grow on Maggie. She'll admire his ability to hold onto/reclaim his "spark." It may not be the kind of courage she's used to, but bravery comes in many forms.

    Eventually: Grandma vibes

    Julian:
Julian is the only other born-and-raised New Soliman character in our cast, and like Maggie he would have grown up under Ustanan rule and experienced the revolution. So that alone will create a sense of camaraderie from Maggie's perspective when they're stuck on an island with people from completely different backgrounds. She naively believes that Julian is a guarranteed patriot.

Before the shipwreck, though, I'm not sure how much she would even be aware of him. Maggie has a high rank so maybe Julian would try to strike up a conversation with her at some point. She may pick up on his underlying phoniness but won't think too much of it.

As Julian's true colors begin to show, I could see Maggie feeling embarrassed and annoyed with him. New Solimar and everything it represents is her pride and joy, but in Ordadus the only representation of New Solimar outside of herself is Julian, a man who relies not on courage but on manipulation and selfishness. Like Emil, it frustrates her to no end that this is who fate decided should live. Her morality will drive her to form stronger alliances elsewhere.

In terms of Julian's "cowardice to courage" arc, she will probably constantly remind him of New Soliman's motto (Glory Favors the Fearless) in a "come on bro you should KNOW better" way

    Felix:
Especially when she learns what preposterous creed Ordadus rules by, Maggie will see Felix and what he represents as the only redeemable quality of the island. She understands and empathizes with his anger, and his revolutionary streak reminds her of her younger self.

As time goes on, I can see Maggie surprising herself with how protective she feels of him. Losing her own son changed that in her. Heightened grandma vibes.

They share the same goal in overthrowing Ordadian rule but their reasons for it are very different - this could cause some late-plot tension and help Maggie reform her blind New Solimar loyalty.

    Aurelia:
Maggie will have a decent amount of respect for Aurelia at first, especially as she learns of her circumstances and her daughter. Maggie knows what it's like to risk one's life for a good cause, and will appreciate her courage in keeping the survivors hidden from the knights.

The betrayal will be a big disappointment. By that point Maggie will be sold on the idea that Cambios = Ordadus' ultimate revolutionary good and knights = Ordadus' ultimate powerful bad, so seeing Aurelia side with the latter after all - all of that respect is now gone.

Maggie has never been very active in her children's lives, but across the course of this story her priorities will begin to shift away from national priorities and more toward personal connections. Especially after losing her son, she will come to yearn to see her remaining daughter and grandchildren again more than anything. She realizes that Aurelia's courage in always putting her daughter before herself is something truly remarkable and something to strive for, if she ever gets back home.

After Aurelia re-joins the cause, Maggie's fondness of her will only grow.

    Ilaria:
Maggie's early interaction with Sol will teach her that not ALL knights are bad, and since Felix seems to trust Ilaria, Maggie warily entertains the idea of trusting her, too. But as the queen's heir, that trust is a lot to ask for. Ilaria will need to prove herself.

Ilaria's leadership standards are something Maggie can respect as a proven leader herself. Once the whole gang is in on it together, it could be a source of tension - Maggie is convinced this is the right way to do something and Ilaria knows it's that. Ilaria has vastly superior knowledge about how Ordadus operates, but Maggie is stubborn.

AURELIA
    Emil
She will definitely be a bit put-off by him, at least at first. Aurelia has always been wary of those who carry themselves lightly and happily always, no matter what is going on around them. She thinks they're disillusioned, false optimists. So without knowing Emil too deeply, she thinks he's a little bit insane for carrying this persona even after the wreck and everything that comes after.

She also feels pitied by him (which she HATES, even though she definitely pities herself a lot). Sensing that he sees her as a charity case and still continuing to work with him is hard, but she does notice that he begins to respect her more as the days go on.
I feel like they'd get into passive-aggressive fights A LOT.

If they get close enough, I can see them connecting in their loneliness. Just two old souls with more in common than meets the eye.

    Julian
First impression: if she ever found out about his backstory with his previous lover, she'd be FURIOUS. Like slap-him-across-the-face furious. She has no patience for people like that, and she would forever see him as a man no better than her baby daddy.

Honestly, she'd probably get a bad vibe off him from the beginning. Unlike Emil, who is just genuinely annoying to her in his joyfulness, she can sense that Julian is someone not to be trusted. He's fake solely for the cause of manipulation, and that is one of the worst things to be in her eyes.

    Felix
Aurelia and Felix share some anti-government sentiments, but he strikes her first and foremost as passionate. For someone as apathetic as herself, this is new. But he also strikes her as dangerous, in that he will do anything to get what he wants. So while she agrees with his views, she may try to distance herself from him for her own safety.
She sympathizes with the loss he has felt, although she has never experienced it herself. The two have little in common, but once Aurelia comes back to the cause, she sees him as a valuable leader, and what was once dangerous is now admirable.

    Maggie
Although they have lead quite different lives, Aurelia will come to respect Maggie's maternal heart and love for her family--after all, it's her own daughter that keeps her going. Especially after Maggie has lost some family to the ship, Aurelia can feel the pain emanating off of the older woman. In a way, Maggie is what Aurelia could have been--they are both strong, with a soft spot for their family. Aurelia is almost jealous of this woman who had the luxury to retire, and still came back to keep working.
I imagine once Aurelia betrays the crew, Maggie might be resentful of her--after all, who wouldn't be? But she might soften and realize her intentions once she sees Aurelia and Lucia in Nevra Cor.

Random thing: Aurelia probably wouldn't ask Maggie about her eyepatch, simply because in Darnell these injuries are common and often go untreated. She'd be curious, but not enough to mention it until they got closer.

    Ilaria
Aurelia doesn't trust the government. Plain and simple. She was even hesitant to let her daughter potentially become a part of it. Living in Darnell her entire life, having never seen one member of the royal family ever visit, she thinks of them as selfish and pretentious. Before she meets Ilaria, she imagines they are all stuck-up and uncaring.

Once they meet, though, Aurelia can sense something is different about Ilaria. She is reserved (which Aurelia can appreciate) and not worried to get her hands dirty. In a way, she is the most commoner she can be given her circumstances, and Aurelia can recognize what a sacrifice that is. However, she will still have reservations towards the princess, deeply rooted in her distrust with the royal family. She still wonders why if Ilaria is so down-to-earth, why she has never advocated for the fishing families of Darnell.

EMIL
    Maggie:
Emiliano will find Maggie fascinating and view her honestly as a bit of a living relic. She's witnessed the rise and fall Ustana and New Solimar. She's a piece of living history and he'll want to hear her perspective on the purpose of their journey but also her perspective on the past. (He doesn't see any personality as a barrier to connection btw which is why i don't comment on that lmao... he... is drawn to anything) He thinks she's a living legend and is very cool.

    Julian:
Emil does not pick up on any of Julian's deception: he takes Julian's facade at face value, and will be incredibly easy for Julian to schmooze up to, befriend, and take advantage of. Since Julian is a master pretender of Caring About What People say, if he gives Emil an ear for but a moment, he'll have Emil's affection. All this boy really wants is to be cared about, so much so that he won't know if that care is fake: so... I forsee any form of betrayal of trust/percieved loyalty completely tearing him apart! (Please do so.)

    Felix:
He is amazed to meet an inspiring, fierce, intimidating leader of a rebellion and he finds Felix very mysterious and also far too uptight. He thinks Felix needs to learn to relax, but also is desperate to know his story. He can sense that Felix has one that's worth telling and its eating him alive.

    Ilaria:
I don't believe in love at first sight, but Emiliano is infatuated at first sight, and falls head over heels. Ilaria, to him, is the most beautiful, competent, commanding, praiseworthy woman he's ever laid eyes upon and he quite literally is not okay. Lovesick is a good word for it, for how sick he'll get with infatuation. From the start his respect for her is through the roof, but he can't deny he also just thinks she's drop dead gorgeous. He will not be normal around her, I fear. (Depends on what you define as normal, though).

    Aurelia:
In the worst pretentious rich-kid background way possible... he pities her, and I hate that he will. He'll feel sympathy, and he'll want to help in a very priveliged-saviorism way, but of course, he'll have nothing to offer. So that just makes his pity feel icky, and he won't know why, so it'll result in him being a bit awkward with her -- trying to relate, and realizing he really can't. Surprisingly, Aurelia might be the only person who manages to get him to shut up by virtue of existing. Somewhere inside him, he thinks he could "fix" her, but also knows he can't.

ILARIA
Maggie: Maggie is a very conflicting figure in Ilaria's mind. She is an impressive and highly accomplished woman who is obviously brave, strong, and a decisive leader, but it is quickly apparent what Maggie thinks of Ilaria's ancestor and Ordadus as a kingdom. As the story goes on and they come together to make change in the kingdom, they may have conflict in how they should approach the situation, who should lead, etc. I could see Ilaria having internal doubts about her leadership skills, worthiness, etc., due to her conflicts with Maggie over how things should be done, but it will help her to grow more assertive and to stand up for her own beliefs and stance at the same time.

Emil: Ilaria's first impression of Emil was that he is the most frivolous, soft, and spoiled creature she has ever met. But her opinion quickly softens when she sees that he is intelligent in scholarly matters and he is earnest (but maybe too earnest), but that he has no sense of self-awareness or of hardship up until this point. He's still irritating, but more like a fluffy, yapping puppy that won't stop following her around. I can imagine her getting him out of trouble on many occasions. She does pity him when she senses some melancholy hidden inside him. When she realizes that Emil has developed feelings for her, it makes her feel awkward and a little uncomfortable, though she does her best to not show it. I think that she may think of him more favorably when he begins to grow as a person and gain some new perspective. However, it may possibly develop into something more in the future. Maybe her feelings could change if they share some meaningful moments and find common ground to bond over. Or find that their opposing traits help to balance each other out. Either way, if he chooses to stay in Ordadus, she will probably appoint him as a royal advisor or scholar of foreign relations.

Julian: The way that Julian would probably quickly ingratiate himself to her would put Ilaria on her guard against him. She is used to people who try to get into her good graces with flattery and slimy behavior, so his act doesn't fool her. However, she treats him politely, since he is a foreigner who was shipwrecked on their shores with no choice and she is a princess. Their relationship could change if she finds a reason to respect him or they have common ground. His experience with handling a variety of people could possibly help in the royal court in the future if he chooses to stay in Ordadus.

Aurelia: Ilaria initially does not have a strong opinion of Aurelia, just that she is one of her subjects. She seems like a regular common woman who has a hard life like many living on the coast. Ilaria is a bit suspicious of her since she helps the rebels at some points, but she begins to trust her when she betrays the rebels. Ilaria can respect the sacrifices that she has made for her family. Maybe getting to know Aurelia better would help Ilaria to be better informed or prepared to make changes in Ordadus that will benefit the regular citizens as well.

Felix: Her best friend and brother figure (though she doubts he feels the same way). He's one of the people she cares about/loves the most, if not THE one. If we're being real, he probably is number 1. Ilaria would probably call him one of the best, nicest, and most generous and genuine people that she knows. She feels a great sense of guilt towards him since his parents were killed due to the laws and she feels she wasn't able to protect him and help him to live a happy life despite losing his family. At the same time, despite harboring stress over how she thinks she wasn't able to stop him from becoming the angry rebel he is and that she wasn't good enough to help him, he is the one she feels the most at ease around. She has a lot of people she wants to please in life, but she would do anything she believes is in her power and doesn't go against her principles for him. She wishes they weren't pitted against each other on opposing sides of conflict, and she's afraid that she may one day have to face him in a fight against the rebels. Eventually they will be able to overcome the obstacles between them to join together and push for a better Ordadus for all.

Character Role Descriptions
Also copied from the pad!
Spoiler
The Loyalist - [@Wolfi]
Fiercely committed to the cause of the Gloria Invicta to the point of absurdity. They feel a sense of urgency surrounding the global “race for exploration” and see Ordadus as New Solimar’s rightful territory. They hold King Ordavin with the utmost contempt.

Suggested Arc: Over time, the humanity of Ordadus chips away at The Loyalist’s conviction. They now advocate for allegiance with Ordadus rather than subjugation.

The Magister - [@soundofmind]
The Magister is an educated New Soliman survivor of the shipwreck who sees themselves as better and smarter than others, especially the technologically primitive Ordadians. Motivated by pride.

Suggested Arc: Hardship humbles them, and they see how much they still have to learn. Finds new fulfillment in teaching.

The Lackey - [@winterwolf0100]
The Lackey is a subordinate survivor of the Gloria Invicta shipwreck. A follower through and through; easily manipulated by whichever side holds the upper hand. Always chooses safety over morality.

Suggested Arc: Tired of disappointing the people they care about, The Lackey places themselves in harm’s way in a demonstration of immense courage.

The Noble - [@Lael]
Closely related to Queen Corvinus, and shares her beliefs that all outsiders are a force of danger and Ordadus must stay hidden from the rest of the world. Can be a knight.

Suggested Arc: Time with the New Solimans opens The Noble’s mind. They become the successor to the throne and seek out an allegiance with New Solimar.

The Commoner - [@daisyletters]
Complacent with their life in Ordadus, The Commoner has no serious qualms with Queen Corvinus’ rule and only wants to improve their own life. It's hard enough as is to make ends meet for themselves - how can they waste resources on others? They are motivated by security or money, and pulled into the cause unwillingly.

Suggested Arc: Once a passive bystander, experiences with the New Solimans has taught them that they have greater potential outside of their comfort zone.

The Scoundrel - [@SilverNight]
Harbors hatred toward Ordadian royalty due to an injustice in their past. Distrusts the New Solimans because they represent an even greater authority, but sees in them an opportunity to further their own goals.

Suggested Arc: Initially selfishly motivated, The Scoundrel find greater purpose in advocating for the common Ordadian. Learns to trust/love again.

Captain Rufus Cato: Maggie's grand-nephew, ambitious; he's a patriot but he's also in this for selfish/prideful reasons - discovering new land is a big deal

Admiral Magdalena Seneca: veteran advisor to the captain, has privileges afforded to her b/c of her status and experience (and a dash of nepotism)

First Mate: Commodore Francis Seneca, Maggie's son and Rufus's uncle. 43.
Fiercely loyal like his mother but more upbeat, extroverted, super sociable; helps create a strong sense of comraderie with the crew. High charisma. Takes after his father's more relaxed temperament. Well-humored.

Quartermaster: Commander Hebe Morandi. 37, female.
No-nonsense, runs a tight ship. Known for tough love and letting people learn the hard way. Well-respected.

Gunner: Lieutenant Macedon Palacio. 46, male.
Good friend to Francis/family friend, weapons expert, a little mischievous. Sarcastic, witty, dry humor. Pokes fun at you to show affection.

Boatswain: Ensign Cordula Roche. 32, female.
Life of the party - life motto is to party as hard as she works. Here for a good time. Very YOLO, has lots of crazy stories.

Cook: Ensign Josias Silvestri. 51, male.
Big laugh, gruff, but actually a teddy bear. Looks scary and could kill you but won't, unless you enter his kitchen while he's cooking. Only laughs at slapstick humor and crass jokes.

Overall crew is very large: as an exploration vessel there are up to 100 people manning the ship, enough to split into 3 shifts on a 24hour clock. (The losses... will be Great).

SOUND'S OVERALL VIBES: Heavy on the spirit of comraderie, generally upbeat leadership style focused on getting the job done well when on the clock but heavy on relaxing and having fun when off of it. Likely heavy vision casting for exploration, and the feeling of "discovery" creating a buzz of ambitious expectation.

New Solimar History
Spoiler
The Kingdom of Solimar was a flourishing coastal trading center, renowned for its advancements in nautical technology. King Ordavin was celebrated for maintaining the peace and constructing its new capital city, but when war broke out across the continent, the merchant kingdom was sorely underprepared.

Trapped, with Lord Goryn’s forces about to break through the capital walls, Ordavin chose the coward’s path and fled by ship, bringing family, noblemen, and servants along with him, and a fleet of remaining warships followed at his command.

As their leader disappeared over the horizon into new frontiers, the vast majority of Solimen were left at Goryn’s mercy. A moonless night of flame and slaughter bled into a bleary morning where the entire kingdom was under the kingdom of Ustana’s bootheel. All survivors were imprisoned or enslaved.

Never again did they see their traitor king. His legacy was crowned not only with cowardice but also idiocy, for the Argen Sea into which he sought refuge swallowed ships with a fury unmatched.

The kingdom’s descendents lived in bitter oppression for a long, long time.

The generation that rose from the ashes and built New Solimar on a different coast is unrecognizable, save for the same same language on their tongues.

The world has entered a new age, and their ships are mightier, their sails as wide as clouds, their bows fixed on undiscovered realms.

The northern sea beckons.

Ordadus' towering mountain range entices any adventurous ship passing through with promises of safe anchorage and exploration, but it always proves to be a trap. The shoreline is a deceivingly treacherous minefield of shallow rocks and jagged reefs, hidden by roiling, frothing, ice-cold waves and a blanket of fog.

The beaches are rocky with dark gray sand, home to seals, crabs, and migrating seabirds.

Image

Darnell
Ordadus' primary fishing village is located on a delta, where fishermen live in shacks on the beaches.

Angler
Angler is the primary base of operations for Cambios, the rebel group in Ordadus. The tall, bloodweed-covered cliffs surrounding the beach provide a natural fortification against knights. Much of Angler consists of wooden boardwalks stretching out into the gulf, connecting various pieces of shipwrecked vessels, like the giant shredded hull in the center, where the rebels make their homes.

Cambios rebels are known for rescuing shipwrecked survivors and hiding them from the knights - to varying degrees of success.

Cambios Crew:

Medic: Sertor Severino, 35, male.
- Grew up with a family of iron miners in the mountains. Learned the basics of setting broken bones, patching bites/wounds, and treating bloodweed poison from a multitude of incidents in his community. Knights always did a poor job of protecting them and mostly left the miners to fend for themselves, so he holds a serious grudge against royalty/nobility.
- Dry and sarcastic humor. Isn't fazed by much. Doesn't ask for favors, he just knows where he's needed and steps in to help.
- Stocky, blond.
- Only person besides Felix who knows about Sabina's illness.

Messenger: Jocasta Darius, 19, female.
- Lithe, bright-eyed, and too eager to please. High deception because of her innocent, disarming, childlike friendliness/charm.
- Blends into almost any place in her coming and going because of a lifelong reputation already establishied: she is a social butterfly and a true extrovert, always talking to anyone and everyone and never staying in one place for too long.
- Works closely with Solange/Sol/Ace - a well-established "friend" (a real friend, but-- ya know).
- Fast sprinter.
- Day job: sells fishing bait that she makes herself.

Handyman: Titus Catellus, 30, male.
- Knows a little about a lot of things-- and a lot about a few things you didn't know someone could be an expert in.
- Friendly, eager, and always willing to talk. The only drawback to his work quality is that he'll get distracted from the task at hand if he's chatting with you.
- Originally from Ledros and a survivor of a shipwreck that took place three years ago. - The other survivors were successfully rescued and managed to slip into Ordadian society with some help, but Titus decided to stick around and repay a debt of gratitude.
- Burly, towering, bald guy with an auburn beard who has never once actually looked intimidating due to his constant, wide smile. Unless you're a knight. Then he'll scowl up a storm.

Armorer: Toriano Abatello, 57, male.
- Lives in Nevra Cor / safe place there

Quartermaster: Vettia Darius, 53, female.
- Owned an apothecary shop in Nevra Cor but became fed up with hiding in the cold. - Moved with her family (three teenagers, including Jocasta) to Angler to support the Cambios cause.
- Organizes and distributes supplies. Runs a "market" called Vigilantem, after the ship it's built out of. It has crude tables set up where the community gathers for meals.
- Overwhelmingly extroverted. High emotional intelligence. Lives for gossip.
- Shares Felix's love language of food.

Guard: Ulixes Winograd, 41, male.
- No, no one knows where he came from: everyone just knows he's not from Ordadus. - - No, he won't talk about it. Yes, he knows he doesn't look Ordadian. He has brown skin and straight, thick black hair cut short. His eyes are near-black. His expression is :|. - - - He always wears a flat-cap hat. Always.
- Joined the Cambios early on, first connection was Sabina.
- 5ft9, but thick, muscular, and bearded.
- Infamous for knocking people out in just a few seconds with little fight at all. (Here, that's a good thing.)
- He looks scary, but really, he's just tired. He's committed to the Cambios, but he's dangerously close to burnout/losing hope for the cause. What keeps him tied is Sabina.

Scrounger: Francisca Renatus, 23, female.
- Trader for the Cambios-- not everything can be made at home, and sometimes you need someone to march into the market and buy what you need. Or blackmail someone into giving you what you need. You know, whatever's necessary.
- Quite the networker. She's gotten three people and counting to join the cause.
- Silver-tongued and spunky at the same time, Francisca knows the art of the deal and how to barter better than anyone. She always brings back more than anyone expects for the money she's been given, and it's not always because she picks someone's pocket on the way in.
- She has semi-affluent parents in Nevra Cor and has, through her constant requests for money from them, made them into the first unknowing sponsor and donor to the Cambios Rebels. Oops. Oh well. Everyone say thank you to the Renatus family.
- Had a silly crush on Felix until she learned he was married to the cause and oblivious to anyone else. Got over it quite well, thankfully.
- Short, blonde, brown-eyed, and surprisingly freckled for someone who hasn't grown up with much sun.

The combination of Velmara’s orbital path and Ordadus’ proximity to the north pole creates a unique day and night cycle where the mountains cast long shadows over the island.

Even more unique, however, is how the grasslands respond to this cycle.

This entire region is swathed in a dense, knee-high yellow grass called bloodweed. It earned its sinister moniker from its symbiotic relationship with a subterranean nocturnal fungus that makes nighttime in the plains a living hell.

As soon as the mountains' shadow creeps over the land, the bloodweed begins to rattle as the fungus at its roots awakens. Any living creature that dares wade through the bloodweed at night is prey to the fungus' deadly poison.

Image

Bloodweed
A hardy, fast-growing grass, bloodweed in the daytime is completely harmless, aside from being so thick and tangled it can grab at your ankles.

At night, a carnivorous nocturnal fungus pokes out of the soil at the bloodweed's roots, emitting pheromones that attract small herbivores. The fungus has tiny thorns, so small you can barely feel them, that secrete a slow-acting poison. There's a sprawling subterranean network in the bloodweed's roots where clusters of the fungus communicate with other clusters, allowing it to zero in on prey.

Once the prey falls, mycelium takes over, decomposing the body and feeding the fungus, in turn providing nutrients for the bloodweed's soil.

Some extra details:
Spoiler
  • Fire can burn bloodweed, but it doesn't help much because the fungus is mostly underground and bloodweed grows back quickly
  • Spores from the fungus can travel on shoes/clothing and briefly take "root" in other soil (like in the mountains) though it will die out quickly without bloodweed
  • Though not deadly themselves, spores can cause painful rashes
  • The average Ordadian assumes the poisonous fungus and bloodweed are not separate species but one deadly entity

Faelk
The faelk is the most versatile domesticated beast of Ordadus, used for riding and hauling, and for its thick coat and meat. A tall, muscular, oatmeal-colored antelope with dark brown points, faelk have a pair of forward-facing horns, feathered hooves, and light blue eyes. They're social creatures who enjoy the company of their kin.

Like wild horses, some faelk are temperamentally more gentle than others, but all need to be "broken" before they can be used as steeds. Two types of Ordadians are found atop their faelk more often than their own two feet: knights (royal guards) and falken (cowboys).

Falken
Falken shoulder the dangerous responsibility of protecting the great herd of faelk as it grazes along the sun's path, hugging the foothills in endless circles. Falken, like knights, have special bonds with their faelk steeds, and though they lack the status of their purple-and-silver-adorned superiors, falken are nonetheless admired for their combat ability. Typically armed with a spear or one-handed sword, falken are frequently warding off packs of wolves and the occasional saber-toothed tiger. They also carry a lariat and a whip to keep dawdling faelk on schedule, lest the mountains' shadow creeps too close.

Commonfolk
Folk who require flat grasslands to earn their coin (like farmers and falken) spend the night in the foothills of the mountains.

Common occupations include:
Spoiler
  • Farmer
  • Falken
  • Vintner
  • Miller
  • Travelling merchant

The most prominent geological feature of Ordadus is its ring of jagged mountains that encircle a glacial basin.

No Ordadian would ever know this, but the mountains surrounding Nevra Cor are in fact the walls of an ancient, extinct volcano. Millions of years ago, the largest volcano the world had ever seen erupted in Velmara’s northern hemisphere. Erosion has deepened its crater and steepened its walls.

These often snow-capped mountains are home to lush pine forests, meandering cave systems, mineral deposits, waterfalls, and steep stone-paved switchbacks. They're also abundant in animal life. Fierce predators like saber-tooth tigers, wooly boars, and silver wolves find refuge from bloodweed in the rocky hillsides. They prey on mountain goats, hares, faelk, and unlucky humans.

Image

Pinnacle Manor
While Ordavin Keep in Nevra Cor is the heart of the kingdom, Pinnacle Manor, a multilayered stone castle, is the royal court's mountainside base and the primary location for Ordadian knights to be trained, complete with stables for their royal-bred faelk. The manor contains terraces where nobles can enjoy sunlight in safety and watch young knights-to-be sparring below.

Solea Stable
On the west side of the river, where the mountains meet the plains, the grassland slopes up to meet rockier terrain where bloodweed can't grow. After falken (cowboys) lead the herd across the river, they all climb the final stretch up to Solea to bed down for the night. It's a big rocky basin that the river runs through, with waterfalls and a mill. The herd grazes and gathers their strength for the next day, while domesticated faelk sleep in their own stalls in a big stable.

The falken, meanwhile, sleep in scattered cabins - many of them are young adventurous folk who share a roof and costs of living with each other. There would also be rooms for rent because this area is considered the safest stopping point along the foothills between Darnell and Nevra Cor. There's a knight posting here as well, with a separate fancier knight stable. Lastly, the center of entertainment is a corral for "breaking" wild faelk.

Commonfolk
Save for the occupants of Pinnacle Manor, which has little capacity beyond its noble and knightly tenants, those choosing to live in the mountains of Ordadus do so at great risk. Established towns and significant work sites, like mines and lumberyards, are guarded by knights and fortified as best as possible. However, when night falls and animals scramble up the rocks en masse to escape the plains, bloody encounters are frequent, even for larger communities.

The most common occupations in this region include:
Spoiler
  • Lumberjack
  • Miner (iron)
  • Hunter/Trapper
  • Potter
  • Weaver
  • Beekeeper
  • Traveling merchant

The mountains surrounding Nevra Cor are tall enough that not one drop of direct sunlight ever reaches the basin, creating a unique tundra biome where plants have evolved to photosynthesize in very low light. Snowfall is frequent.

There are no trees in Nevra Cor, just a few species of wide-leafed shrubs and vines that climb village walls, hungry for whatever light they can draw from the bleak gray sky. Some groundcover plants, meanwhile, absorb the soft purple glow of Lucibella, a bioluminescent mushroom.

The majority of Ordadians live in Nevra Cor. It's cold and bleak and they don't have as much freedom living so directly under the shadow of Ordavin Keep, but the basin is the safest place to be, a refuge from the beasts of the mountains, the poison of the plains, and the greater threat of the world as a whole.

Image

Ordavin Keep
Queen Corvinus and much of the royal court of nobles live in luxurious Ordavin Keep, named after King Ordavin, the first ruler of Ordadus. A looming stone castle, the structure is built to be well-fortified (as if the mountains weren't tall enough!) and its main entrance is guarded by knights.

Commonfolk
Any medieval occupation that doesn't require sunlight can be found in the village surrounding Ordavin Keep, including:
Spoiler
  • Blacksmith
  • Carpenter
  • Miner (silver)
  • Tanner
  • Mason
  • Tailor
  • Herbalist/Apothecary
  • Baker
  • Spindler
  • Glassblower

Lucibella
The purple glowing mushroom found throughout Nevra Cor has many uses:
Spoiler
It's the key ingredient in the only known antidote to bloodweed poison. Lucibella and the antidote, therefore, is constantly imported to other parts of the island. Once picked, the mushroom itself will only last a few days before decaying; the antidote's potency, too, wears off with time. Lucibella's most common side effect is sleepiness.

(Lucibella is, in fact, a cousin to the bloodweed fungus: sometime or another, spores traveled from the crater to the plains and followed a carnivorous evolutionary path.)

The mushroom goes beyond medicinal usefulness. It's a frequent ingredient in many Ordadian dishes, and can even be candied with honey. Its pigment, too, is boasted in the royal court's official colors - purple and silver - glittering in the textile of every noble banner and knight's caparison.

Knights
Young people pining for knighthood begin training in combat at an early age. If they are accepted for training, they live in Pinnacle Manor as squires for four years, from the ages of 13 to 17, where they bond with their faelk and learn to be knights. Upon graduation they are knighted and presented with their armor and personalized caparison.

Knights are posted around Ordadus in each significant settlement. When on the job they are expected to be stoic and calm. While their primary responsibility is to protect people from immediate danger, their secondary orders are to report anything out of the ordinary to their Commander or General.

Most settlements have a bell which is used to summon any nearby knights if more aid is required. Lookouts posted in a few areas around the coast also have bells to report sightings of unfamiliar ships.

See some faelk/knight drawings here!

Knight rankings:
Spoiler
1. Squire
2. Knight
3. Knight Commander
4. Knight General
5. The Grand Master (currently Grand Master Remus Pollux)

Extra details:
Spoiler
  • While tailors craft each caparison with only purple and silver pigments, every knight's "brand" is different in some way - some are checkered, some are striped, some have different symbols
  • The knight uniform is gray and white, with purple accents, chainmail, and steel armor
  • Knights are referred to as "Sir" or "Dame"

Religion
Ordadus follows a loosely defined pagan religion where different elements of nature are embodied by gods. The most popular god (especially for those in Nevra Cor who miss him greatly!) is Sol. There's also Mar, a female god of the sea, Sax, a male god of the mountains, and Gel, the female god of ice.

As if their egos weren't big enough already, kings and queens of Ordadus are believed to become some kind of lesser deity after passing. Each ruler has their own statue in Nevra Cor, which are frequently used as shrines.

Curses inspired by the gods:
Spoiler
Each of the gods' names are expletives on their own.

"My God":
- Solah!
- Marra!
- Saxo!
- Gela!

"Sol blind me!"
"By Sol's dying light" = "I swear"
"Gel's breath!"

Magic
While there isn't any magic or magical creatures in Velmara, superstition abounds like in any medieval society, and varies from region to region. Of note: bloodweed is widely believed to be a curse cast on the island by the Solimar survivors who were left behind all those generations ago. It's how early Ordadians coped with the guilt.

Calendar
Ordadus and New Solimar share the same calendar.
Spoiler

The Blight
a @Silvern addition

Every decade or so, Ordadus experiences an outbreak of the Blight, a deadly contagious illness. Ordadian nobility always seize the opportunity to throw the blame on outsiders by claiming they're infected and responsible for the spread, while the nobles, in the meantime, suspiciously never get sick. There is a generational and cultural fear of the Blight, to the point that virtually everyone on the island has lost or nearly lost someone to it, and the population is highly vigilant to signs of its resurgence.

The outside world long ago figured out the cure to this Blight, which to them is just a common cold: a mushroom similar to lucibella, but blue in color. Every ship arriving on Ordadus' shores will be carrying this medicine, and nobles have taken it and used it for themselves. After studying it, they've even managed to cultivate their own cure, a strain of glowing blue lucibella in a secret apothecary under lock and key in Ordavin Keep. In order to perpetuate the fear of outsiders, it's a cure they strictly keep to themselves.

During her reign, Queen Corvinus has gone so far as to initiate outbreaks of the Blight herself so that it coincides with the arrival of outsiders.

Note to self of some other helpful lore things I want to add down the line:

- Some fun Ordadus/Solimar curses/phrases
- What technologies Solimans are used to that Ordadus doesn't have

Let me know if y'all think of anything else that would be useful!
