Awww, thanks! I'm not sure if I'm panicking unnecessarily or not, so this is helpful. ^^

A lot of the authors say that agents are saying that YA works over 100K are instant rejects, even for fantasy (which tends to be longer since you have to do world building too) so I am nervous! But also, agents tend to seem a lot more sympathetic to authors and encourage authors to send their stuff in anyway, since if it's slightly over word count, they will work with the author to bring it down... which is slightly encouraging? But also the entire process is admittedly nerve-wracking. XP

On one hand, I don't want to get bogged down in editing this down without even knowing if it's publishable. So I know, intellectually, that I need to need to send it in and see what response it gets. But on the other hand, if it automatically gets disqualified for being too long, I will hate myself for not even trying to get it trimmed down first. (I don't mind working with an agent to trim it down... but like, I want to snag that agent first!)

Anyway!

For yesterday, I eliminated a subplot which just had a... lackluster ending, and that got rid of almost 1000 words! So I am at 107.4K words right now!

I have several other plans for revisions too... I've been going through the ending again. I changed it up a bit last time I went through it, so I want to make sure the changes I made are solid. I've already made a bunch of notes of what I would like to do based on my rereading... so hopefully that helps me get it slimmed down even more! :)

RIP I added almost 300 words to Book 1. XD

Here is a section of some mostly brand new words from a fairly new chapter.

Spoiler
“That’s enough!” Sergius snapped, standing up and stepping in between Cyrus and the girls. He turned to Cyrus, his face stern. “Leave the handmaid alone!”

Cyrus scowled and crossed his arms. “Don’t worry. I have no intention of ever bothering the handmaid again.”

Solea grew red. “You don’t mean that.”

Cyrus glared at her. “I’ve told you before. I have no patience for tyrants or those who enable them. If you wish to abandon reason and support your sister’s murderous path, I cannot stop you. But I will never support you, if that is the path you choose.”

...I added more because I think I have a query blurb that I am happy with? Maybe????

Here is the query blurb!

Spoiler
Solea is the handmaid of the Lady reborn, though she would rather not be. Still, what else can she do? Defy her powerful Swan family and refuse to serve the very person prophesied to defeat the Conquerors and bring peace to the world? Even if that person is her domineering stepsister, Alainna. Unwilling to fight her family, Solea resigns herself to a life of servitude.

Until Cyrus arrives.

A young, charismatic language teacher, handpicked by her family to help the sisters master the prophecy’s language, Solea is initially suspicious of him. After all, the more trustworthy members of her family seem to hint that Cyrus might be a Conqueror. Yet, instead of focusing solely on the demands of the prophecy, Cyrus introduces himself by promising to help them find their voice, a sentiment that captivates Solea immediately.

Under Cyrus’s influence, the sisters form a tenuous alliance to face the prophecy Alainna must fulfill as the Lady reborn. But as they uncover the prophecy’s secrets, they discover the Conquerors may not be as evil as they once thought. Worse, the prophecy demands the death of a Conqueror — someone potentially innocent, condemned solely by their bloodline — an act Solea finds unconscionable. Yet, without that sacrifice, Alainna will die.

Desperate to survive, Alainna demands Solea’s total obedience to help her fulfill the prophecy, even if it means resorting to murder. Meanwhile, Cyrus, horrified by Alainna’s cold resolve, offers Solea a chance to escape and forge a new life with him in exile, away from the cruel demands of the prophecy. A path that risks killing Alainna and tearing her family apart. Torn between Alainna’s desperation and Cyrus’s promise of freedom, Solea must decide where her loyalties lie — and what she’s willing to sacrifice.

...so yay!

Anyway, today's edits were mostly about highlighting Solea's impossible choice (as you can kind of see in the edit, hahaha) so even though I added more words, I think it will make it more awesome overall! :)

I am not done trimming! But still, progress! Now that I've hit this point, I'll start rewriting some scenes. :)

OKAY.

Book 2 is now 159K words! I haven't rewritten anything for that yet, so that's just simple edits. I am hopeful that my rewrites will slim it down even more!

Also! Book 1 is at 106.7K words right now, so it's in a downward trajectory again! :)

More babbling about word count and queries (no real spoilers, just kind of long, haha).

Spoiler
In other news, it's apparently the length of The Cruel Prince, which is totally a comp, so I am slightly excited!

Also, I've been looking more into word counts and fantasy tends to be a littttttle more forgiving for books that are set in a different setting compared to your generic medieval fantasy setting with a unique mythology. So, since my world is not medieval (it's kind of based on the Victorian age, so there's more of an industrialized setting) and there is a unique mythology involved, THERE IS HOPE FOR ME.

MAYBE. XD

Okay, this part might be more spoilerish, though honestly it probably doesn't make any sense to most of you. So I dunno. Still, thoughts about the ending...

Spoiler

I am still afraid about the ending. Like, the writing is sooooo good. And then you get to the ending and it's just... a lot.

Which I previously ignored because I would say, "WELL. THAT'S JUST THE END OF THE STORY."

But like. When I had my family read it, while they were absorbed, they were definitely anxious throughout it all. And then, when they got to the end, they immediately wanted the next book, just because they were like, "You cannot end it like this without letting us read the next part."

Which kind of signifies to me:

1) The ending is final, but not conclusive, and it leaves more questions than answers.
2) It is an anxiety attack.

Also, when I was writing the query and then reading over the ending... it's kind of passive for Solea? Which I don't like. She has her moments of doubt and hesitation, and it's completely understandable that she hesitates at the end because she is overwhelmed and that's what she does when she is overwhelmed. But she is also strong and, once she finds her voice, she can be bold and decisive.

Like, for example, when she initially meets Sergius, she is scared because he is antagonistic toward her. But she stands up to Sergius several times during the book!

Also, she has a rocky relationship with Alainna... really all throughout the story, haha. They sometimes make up and there's peace, but also they clash so much and Solea, while she occasionally hesitates and is overwhelmed, she also stands up to Alainna multiple times!

So when the climax comes and Solea is hit with the greatest challenge that she's ever faced, I think it's understandable that she is overwhelmed at first and hesitates, because that's completely in character for her! BUT ALSO. I want her to rise up to challenge with courage and really just... really transform into a better character. And so yeah, the ending will still remain the ending in what happens (so I'm not changing that), but when it happens, I also want you to be cheering for Solea because of her strength and grace.

So... yeah!

Anyway, I'll have to think about that more. ^^

OKAY!!!!

I REWROTE THE ENDING FOR BOOK 1 TODAY AND I AM CURRENTLY SUPER PUMPED ABOUT IT AND THAT IS WHY I AM WRITING IN ALL CAPS.

WOOOOOOOOO.

It is still very dramatic and the same thing happens, but it is not so... brutal, for lack of a better word, and Solea isn't so passive. Like, she is... but also she isn't? There is AGENCY involved.

Also!!! Did I mention that now the manuscript is 105.5K words???? YESSSSSSSSS.

I have to add a couple of things -- like, there has to be an altar in the pool of water now at the Temple. But like. YESSSS. I am pumped.

WHELP. I decided that my query blurb above wasn't completely accurate to my story, so I revised it more today. XD I'll probably sit on it for a while, but I think it's good???

In more exciting news!!!

I GOT THE BIRTHDAY PARTY CHAPTER LESS THAN 6K WORDS!!!

This might sound ridiculous, but I assure you that when I wrote it, it was like... 14K words? So like, the very fact that this is less than half the amount is actually a really big thing.

(OMG, I am sorry, I am such a longwinded writer... I assure you that it's looking better!)

ALSO. It is now 105.1k! This after I extended some scenes... so like, I've deleted about 800 words today, which is AMAZING, trust me!

Book 1 is now 104.4K words, which means it rounds down to 104K! Yay!!! The closer I can get to 100K (or less) the better shape I'll be!

I finished a full draft of my query letter! YES. Not just query blurb, but query letter! Comps and all. It is written in a clear, concise, relaxed style, which is amazing because my first drafts were hot messes because I was SO NERVOUS writing them and word vomiting everything. Like, seriously, one of the sentences was over fifty words long, it was so bad. But now it looks polished... maybe???

Anyway. That is all. Working on the synopsis today...

Ahhhh thank you!

At this point, I'm only focusing on getting it two pages... the one page synopsis honestly terrifies me, haha. One step at a time! :)

Weirdly enough, after spending weeks on my query blurb, the synopsis is... somewhat better? I think I spent all my stress worrying about the query blurb, haha. It's going along much faster anyway!

ANYWAY.

Book 1 is 103.9k!

Synopsis is 1188 words so far!

*blinks*

Omg, is it really the last day???

- I did not write ANY of my novel that I intended to write. Instead, I got excited about editing, so I did that gleefully... whoops.

I do intend to go back to this story! I just... got excited about editing, lol.

- I trimmed more than 30K words from Book 2 without any major rewrites, which is honestly as amazing as it is scary. It is still overly bloated (159K) but like. I know I can trim it more and that makes me happy.

- Book 1 is currently at 103.6K words, which is amazing honestly. I still need to trim a little bit more, but it's not in instant reject territory, which makes me happy.

- I wrote a query letter that I actually really like. Also, my bio is awesome:

When I’m not writing, I wrangle children and watch grass grow — literally — on my hay farm.

Like LOL. I shouldn't be so amused, BUT I AM.

- I wrote a decent (I think?) synopsis less than 1000 words long that fits comfortably on two pages.

I am soooo close to querying, I can smell it. I still want to get my word count a little more down (current goal is 102K) but yeah! I am soooo close!

So YEAH. Work hard, play hard, I guess! :)
