Camp NovMo 2025: Generation Escapees

I've had this idea floating around for years; ever since I was in middle school! It started off with the basic plot line of kids getting kidnapped by crazy scientists for experimentation, but it's really expanded and changed ever since creating my first roleplay on YWS, Sovereign, with @Spearmint.


This takes place before the story in Sovereign, when Sovereign had just come into office.
The leader, Sovereign, is a little old lady who seems lovely but loves her power. She tasked the best scientists in their division to come up with some new invention or technology that could empower the leader of the country. So that she didn't need to rely on body guards in case of an emergency. Rats were too small of test subjects, and so were cats and dogs. So what better than human children?


Goal: A page's worth of words a day, whether it be ideas or scenes.

Have you ever read the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson?? Because that's what this reminds me of (in a good way!)

Human experimentation. No. Even better? Human CHILD experimentation. It’s cool that this has evolved from a sort of roleplay! I also like your goal. It’s modest but cunning.

A draft of the prologue has been published on YWS, however is being edited because it was written with not much world building aspects. In this prologue, it is from a writer's point of view when she gets a package that she received from the kids and then a short preview into the first video that shows some of the kids goofing off and getting ready to write their story for future generations so that they remember where they came from.

With that, going into some of the characters!

Okkerill "Oak" Percival

Okkerill is a 15 year old girl and one of the main characters in the story! She was formerly known as Chan Suet Ling, but it's kind of hard to say so she made herself a new name (which isn't exactly much easier, but shortens nicely to 'Oak'(It's pronounced more in a spanish way than it is english)). She is originally from China, and her family moved around about 13 times per year. For her most recent 3 years, she has been living in the Unites States and thanks to their immigration laws her family has stayed in one place ever since moving in.
Because of their constant movement, no ties really formed with other people and even now she's still learning social skills. She despises kids who are "popular", as many times have they picked on her in her freshmen year-- that is until she broke the nose of one-- and you'll get to see some of this aspect of her in the story. She's also very blunt, which can be misconstrued as harsh.
A major part of her character development is that socially awkward aspect. With the help of other characters, kind and rude, she learns to be more extroverted, outgoing, and caring. She learns what it's like to form bonds with those around her, some of them to be as close as siblings.
She was inspired by an outfit that I had randomly thrown on to go on a walk: leggings, a navy blue shirt that was light and airy, and a red and black flannel button-up shirt.

Generation Escapees is more than a thrilling story it’s a testament to how imagination matures and evolves over time. Starting with a high-concept premise children experimented on by power-hungry scientists and developing into a politically charged prequel to Sovereign shows just how expansive your worldbuilding has become. The idea of a seemingly sweet, elderly Sovereign being the mastermind behind morally corrupt science experiments is chillingly brilliant and loaded with storytelling opportunities.
