After a short re-evaluation, i think i'll have to pull out of this rp. So sorry! I've just kinda been working a bit on trying to choose stuff and prioritize myself, and this RP sounds so so so so fun... I just can't bring myself to write for it.
Sharlyn Sharvienne was having an interesting day. It was one of those days that you just couldn't quite sum up. On one hand, it had been a total unmitigated disaster. Then on another very different hand, it had been incredible with memories to cherish for many a year to come. One couldn't just sum up a day like that. She sighed.
She was just going to have to end up winging it in the meeting that would start in...well she wasn't entirely sure. They were meeting at sundown and that could be anywhere from half an hour to an hour. The sun had been a little bit finnicky the past week. Or maybe it just felt that way. Time was confusing anyway.
She let out another small sigh as she reflected on the day. Trying to decide on what mood to set had taken up too much of her time. She needed to reflect properly and have her points noted down.
Reaching over, she quickly picked up her little journal from the lockbox that it was kept it. It was a precious little notebook containing all of her daily thoughts and keeping track of everything that she wanted to do and everything that she had done.
Flipping it open, she began to write down today's thoughts as briefly as she dared without leaving out any useful information:
Major disaster today /revaluate position of Anto, Rexy and Brie
Goal today was to take down rogue carriage on edge of Salachar. Grino gang stole valuables from local market. Attempt to sell to soldiers for taxes. Get in good graces Nasty Ass Air Traitors to the cause. Traitors to Salachar. We put stop. We seize goods. Return to people. Try and get Grino gang nice and gone.
Anto, Rexy and Brie were seduced by gold. Fair to them. They thought just gold. Not realize Nasty Ass Air gold. They only want feed family. Still true to cause. But cause major embarrassment. Grino gang will clown on me. On us. On our legacy. Bad day to be us. Must kick ol' Grino in the teeth again.
Meeting speak about embarrassment. Show how its going to down our reputation. Be gentle. Address Anto, Rexy and Brie kindly. Make sure no one goes on witch hunt. Its cause we all relate to. But be firm. Talk about not seduced gold. Talk about Nasty Ass Air. Construct game plan for kick in teeth.
Kick in Teeth
Major positive today /honor Naomi, Valerie, Panam
Midst of big bust. Trio stood up to king's guard. On the spot thinking. Able to fool them into looking like we were all in on it. Then beat them soundly and true. Nasty Ass Air won't hear from them. Sad day for those families. But they bullies. The children better off without them in the end. Esp cause. One good guard. Confessed. N, V and P offer good comfort. Good deal. Very good.
Image of us up. N,V and P give good name. Name we want. Our honor code upheld. Above and beyond work. Must honor for sure. Do we go full honor. Would it be rub in face for Anto, Rexy and Brie? Must we be calm. Gotta make sure no one feel single out. No one feel too dishearten. Mistake happen. Prize given out. Maybe private ceremony? Maybe honor now? But delay full thing? Make sure Anto, Rexy and Brie only remember good lesson. No humiliate go out.
Meeting speak about honor. Speak about doing things above and beyond line of duty. Importance of people. Importance of people to us. Importance of us to people. Shining example. Discuss what to do with bodies. Get all opinions on how help. Possibly talk and honor. But no reward yet. Postpone so we can be more delicate. Will further consider again this time tomorrow.
Kick in Teeth
Sharlyn leaned back and admired her handiwork. That looked to be about as good as it would get. She could refine thoughts later for final reflection if that was needed but she could conduct today's meeting on this. Right as she'd finished locking it away, the gang began to filter in. Her second in command, Alanna coming in first as she always did.
"Arly, how are you holding up?" She took her usual seat right beside Sharlyn. Sharlyn didn't believe in having a big seat for her towering above everyone else. The chairs were all in a roughly equally spaced circle. There was no clear head of the table. While Arly took charge and maybe her chair was in the best condition of the lot, it made it clear to everyone that they were all equals there to make decisions together. They weren't blind followers cheering on a supreme leader.
"Its been...a day." she confessed.
"Can't make up your mind whether to cry or laugh?"
Arly allowed a small smile to break out on her face, patting her friend on the back. "You know me too well. I should have you put down."
Alanna as always went for her theatric gasp. "But you won't because I'll divulge all your secrets with my dying breath."
"Unfortunately you will. With no hesitation."
Alanna giggled. "With no hesitation."
"Well since I am keeping you around I suppose I can share a little of tonight's agenda with you. Just to help me choose."
"Fire away."
"Thank you," nodded Arly. "I. Well I want to make sure the people know that giving away your soul for gold is not something we should do. I. I don't know. I'm going to try and convince them the value of not giving up. No matter how tempting. I know most of them know it well but its a good one to keep reminding."
Alanna nodded along. "Oh yeah absolutely. And tell everyone to go easy on Anto, Rexy and Brie. Don't want them getting shanked. They got taken in good and proper."
Arly hummed. "Yup Yup. Gonna make sure no one's gonna go full witch hunt. All them folks can relate to being that poor. I doubt they would once the situation is explained. 'Course Grino would have them think otherwise but we ain't about to let Grino corrupt us folk like that."
"Hell nah."
"That's the spirit."
Roberta, Broad and Shiv chose that moment to walk in.
"Berta, Bro and Shi! Come in! Come in! Y'err a little early by the looks of it."
Shiv smiled. "Appears we are. Usually we the second lot to come in. But I heard its been a tough day for Anto and the rest."
Arly and Alanna both nodded. "That it has. That it has. Been a doozy for us all."
Broad spat on the ground. "Grino. We's kicking teeth for that."
"Oh absolutely we shall be." Arly promised. The rest of them were also filtering in soon after, the aforementioned trio, followed close by Hank, Pym and Natalie then their heroes. They were just missing the one at that point.
Alanna tapped the chair loudly to try and cut through the chatter that had inevitably started out once everyone arrived but it seemed they were just a little bit restless today to hear that. Alanna tried again as Arly worriedly glanced up at the sun. It was good and set now. Chorizo should be back now.
Almost like fae'd heard her thoughts, Chorizo stumbled in.
"Sorry I'm late Arly. Had to run some food for my mom. Hope that's alright."
"Perfectly alright Rizo."
Taking a look at all the faces chatting, a few laughs, a few worried glance and she noted with some amusement, one lovestruck look, Arly smiled to herself. No matter what kind of day it was. It was a day for all of them. For their family. They would be okay.
Arly raised her voice slightly, just enough that it would echo through this one small room.
"Night Slider's how about we have a little bit of quiet please."
The entire gang almost immediately fell silent, quickly turning to face her, some of them groaning at having their gossip interrupted, others looking about in surprise at the fact that all of them were in fact here now.
"Thank you kindly." Arly smiled at all of them. "Most of you were there. The rest of you have been caught up on it and or at least heard tell of it in the market. It was quite the day for the Night Sliders. There are rumors. There are heroes. And above all. There is a man named Grino in need of a kick to the teeth."
The whole gang cheered at the last part, even young Rizo joining in on the chant. "We kick some teeth!"
Broad as usual was quick to jump in on the opportunity to be teaching the Grizo's a lesson. It was quite the amusing relationship that Broad shared with that lot.
"I see everyone's excited about that. We'll plan that right at the end and tomorrow before it needs doing. Till then. I want to start today by addressing the rumors. The sour note. The bullshit that Grino has been peddling."
"Hear hear!" Broad said.
Hank joined in, his voice even gruffer than usual. "Total horseshit. The whole village knows. Nuff said."
Arly nodded. "Of course. None of it is even remotely approaching the truth. I do trust our faithful to know who we are and what we stand for but not everyone is as blessed with common sense. Hence we must address it in some form or the other. For the benefit of poor Anto, Rexy and Brie and for the night sliders."
There was a couple of side eyes at them by Pym and Broad, Arly noted, but everyone else nodded or grunted out some form of assent.
"Thank you all for listening," she continued as silence returned to the meeting."Anto, Rexy and Brie did get fooled by an offer of gold. They did not know who it was from. They didn't even realize 'twas the Grino's. They thought it was a stranger and a kind one at that. I know we all have practiced to not trust no one but I'm y'all can all relate to the allure of the coin. Our families won't feed themselves. We do what we can."
Hank grunted out an assent as several of them nodded. Anto, Rexy and Brie were looking a little deflated but they seemed to be a bit more upbeat now that they could see the gang was in support of them.
"That's good to hear. So I'm going to lay down the law here. Anto, Rexy and Brie have found the error of their ways right through all the horseshit going on right now. They accepted it truthfully. They know what they did and they will be better for it. I don't want to see no witch hunts. No nicknames. No nothing. They were doing what they thought was best. While that was not best. They know better now. Right?"
There was a quiet nod from all three.
"So no harm coming to them?"
There was a murmur of assent.
Alanna spoke up. "With feeling!"
There was a louder murmur.
Arly tapped into her voice again. "WITH FEELING SLIDERS!"
"YES ARLY!"
"That's what I like to hear from my folk. Onto to more pleasant matters then."
There was a small cheer from Rizo.
"Go Naomi! Go Panam! Go Valerie!"
There were fond smiles all around, including on Arly's face. "Thank you kindly Rizo. They are indeed our heroes for the day. Some applause for them. They risked their necks to give that poor guard a home and to be away from Nasty Ass Air over in his fancy pants throne."
There was a good smattering of applause. Hank went so far as to slap Naomi on the back. That coming from Hank was a pretty big deal.
"Now that's what I like to see. I will arrange a little dinner for our heroes and maybe a small trinket or two in a few day's time. I want to do it at a happy time because first..."
Broad roared. "KICK TEETH!"
Rizo, Pym and Shiv joined in and Arly glanced at them, a little bit amused, waiting for the lot to settle down again. They really did get a little hungry for vengeance. Given the slimy, scumbag git Grino happened to be, she didn't blame them.
"Exactly, Thank you Broad. How do you think we should proceed?"
There was silence for a bit before Broad offered a hand.
"Kicking teeth will already take place Bro."
Broad put his hand down much to everyone's amusement.
Hank offered his opinion next. "Well I think we should have that guard come out and expose everything. Bugger owes us that much even if he was just doin' his duty."
Arly nodded. "You do have a point on that."
Alanna nodded. "I'm sure he will, just to help us out."
Panam nodded. "He was very grateful-"
"-yeah man's was so grateful I'm sure he'd write and perform a whole play about it if we actually asked, " added Valerie.
Arly beamed. "That sounds wonderful then!"
The gang all murmured an assent.
Rizo beamed. "I can be the one to ask? Smallest person. Might get more sympathy?"
Arly shrugged. "I don't really mind who goes for it honestly."
Hank huffed. "Well I'll join ya then Rizo. Just to make sure the fellow does no funny business."
"We can vouch for that," Panam promised.
"Well y'all can join but I'd like to be there."
"Fair enough," Arly conceded. "You guys handle that then."
Alanna noted that down as Arly deliberate in her head to make sure they'd covered everything that she'd noted down in her book. Figuring that she'd covered just about everything she'd really wanted to, she raised her voice again, cutting through the din that had started up again as she fell silent.
"FOLKS!"
Everyone fell silent again.
"Thank you for listening and also for turning up here. Please do as we have discussed here today and report to me at the slightest problem. As always. No question is too stupid. No problem is too small."
"Hear hear!" Broad echoed and with that began the long parade of people thanking each other, wishing goodbye and forming duos and trios to wander off in. Arly sat back in her chair, smiling and nodding and responding to anything anyone had to say. It looked like today most of them were too excited by all the gossip to have too much time for her until eventually it was just Rizo, Alanna and Broad left.
"Thank you Lady Death!" Broad bowed. "Grino will rue the day he missed with us."
Arly nodded. "He sure will Broad. You'll bee right up at the front if we're kicking him. I promise."
Broad bowed low. "Thank you for this honor Ma'amsir."
"Of course Broad."
Broad grinned broadly, and hopped on out as Rizo settled down on the other chair by Arly.
"I wanted to apologize for-"
"-Rizo I have told you time and time again, we ain't got exact times out here. This isn't the king's court. You show up by sundown. You're good. And you did show up by sundown."
Rizo stood up, excited. She often thought the kid really was too good for this world or a gang. But then, that's just how the cookie tended to crumble out here. It wasn't an easy world and sometimes a gang was the safest thing.
"Thank you ma'am for being so kind. I'll be going then."
Arly nodded and patted Rizo on the shoulder. "Of course Rizo. Proud of you."
He practically skipped his way out of the den.
Alanna grinned. "That kid is adorable."
"Amen to that," Arly agreed. "He has a bright future."
"Hopefully not here and without Nasty Ass Air."
"Without Nasty Ass Air, everyone's got a bright future."
"Too true that." Alanna nodded, getting up from her seat now that everyone else had left.
Arly sighed. "We'll give it to him. One way or the other."
Alanna nodded. "Oh absolutely."
Arly got up as well. "Well thank you for coming Lana. Couldn't do it without you."
"Nor I without you, hang in there, and come over for dinner please once you're done with things."
Arly nodded. "As long as nothing comes up, which it shouldn't tonight, I'll drop by."
Alana nodded. "Sounds good to me!"
Arly nodded and waved as she walked out with one final goodbye.
"You make quite the leader Sharlyn Sharvienne!" Arly jumped almost a food. A voice. Where was that? It almost sounded like..
Stay Safe The Princess of Darkness
Hello! You? Yes you reading this. Have a nice day because you're wonderful and you deserve it!
Yes I am in your head. No you didn't imagine it earlier on. Arly fell back in her seat startled. It was such an odd sensation. Like someone was whispering in her ear and yet there was nothing there. Not even the wind. At the same time it was also somehow the perfect volume to be audible without going so loud as to hurt her ears. It was mind boggling.
"Oh. I. Well you can't blame me for thinking so."
I will allow you that. I suppose it is not typical for a spirit to contact a human. Well. I suppose this may even be the first such occurrence. Certainly I didn't imagine us spirits could do this either until... well I don't really know. That certainly isn't the important part of what I would like to discuss with you.
Arly nodded. She knew the spirit wasn't going to see that most likely but it just felt natural.
"I...well. Before you proposition me in any manner, you ought to introduce yourself first?" She smirked slightly before adding. "Or take me out to dinner. It isn't proper."
To her amusement the spirit only laughed, a melodious tune echoing through the air, almost as good as a gentle breeze.
"I think we'll get along quite alright if you're going to remain quite that entertaining." Even though she didn't want to, Arly felt herself glow just a little bit with pride.
"Why thank you." She responded after a few seconds. "You can hear more about my highly entertaining self if you continue down the path of that introduction you were about to provide me."
"Very well." For some reason Arly felt like the spirit was nodding back at her, even though there was quite literally nothing but empty chairs and an approaching night visible to her eyes.
"I am Myrna. Myrna the Bold you may know me better as. I was once a ruler of this land. I ruled over Aiteach alongside my sister Aleta. You may know of her too. She was quite famous for her work. Aleta the Honest."
Sharlyn's eyes widened. "Myrna the Bold. Like THE Myrna. Wielded a scythe and struck fear into the heart of Adranus himself Myra. Myrna the queen."
"That would be me indeed."
Sharlyn gasped. "Oh my. Oh.. he.. oh... be. I... I don't really know how to respond to that to be completely frank. I. I've dreamed of meeting you. You inspired me to do the work I do you know. Your story. You and your friends, banding together and bringing peace to the land. I was hoping to emulate it."
Myrna chuckled. You're in luck then.
"And why would you say that?" Arly was curious now.
"That is precisely the proposition I have for you.
Arly sat up straight, trying to think back her answer instead of saying it out loud. This felt like the sort of thing that shouldn't easily be spoken out loud. And what would that be?
"Perfect I was about to request you think your answers back because I will hear," Myrna noted before continuing on. "We've been released into the world again. As Spirits. In a desperate hope by the current rebels to win over the one they call Nathair."
"Nasty Ass Air. We use that to make sure no one can spy on us. Plus that is what he is. It works on two levels.[/i]
Myrna was chuckling again."Oh that does indeed. Nasty Ass Air. I adore that. Although you might have to remove the Ass around my sister.
Arly giggled."I can live with that."
"So Nasty Ass Air needs overthrowing."
Arly nodded again. "He very much does."
"We're attempting to do it again. However as spirits our influence on the world is limited so we decided to take on hosts. You will be one of them-"
"-me? Gang running, stealing, barely scraping by me?
Myrna sounded quite firm as she responded. "Yes you. Gang running, stealing, keeping herself, her family, her gang and their families all fed you."
Sharlyn swallowed heavily. It wasn't that gratitude was scarce in her profession or gang. Everyone was always ready to sing her praises but this was different. To hear it from someone that wasn't dependent on her, had only ever seen her from the outside.
"I. I'm honored. I'm beyond honored. I don't know how to describe this. I'm. I'm at a loss for words to be honest."
"Well being honest was always my sister's job. I need you to be bold." Myrna's voice echoed through her like a silent battle cry, energizing her somehow. Can you do that Sharlyn Sharvienne."
Arly nodded. She hadn't been more sure of something like this since the day she'd finally risen to being the leader of the Night Sliders. I can do that Myrna. Call me Arly."
"Arly it shall be. I think this will be a good partnership."
"You know what? I can't find myself disputing that theory." Arly nodded.
Somehow, Arly knew that Myrna was smirking again. "Indeed. Well onto specifics then, if that is nice and out of the way. You can't remain here if we're further our goals. You need to meet up with the others. All eleven of them."
"And how exactly would I go about doing that?
"I am quite glad you thought to ask," Myrna sounded ever so slightly sarcastic on that one,"I certainly wasn't about to tell you or anything."
"Oh my bad. I'm just curious. I was wondering if I'd have to go round everyone up maybe?"
Myrna seemed to shake her head. "No, we're all meeting at the same place. You might be familiar with it from your various dealings in various areas. I believe Kaladin's exact instructions were along the lines of 'You shall go near the border between Aiteach and Meadhan, where the roads meet. You're going to go into the town of Crois-Rathaid and to a tavern and inn called A Good Knight's Rest' or thereabouts. I don't remember his exact wording off the top of my head. I didn't inherit the memory Aleta did."
"Crois-Rathaid, I know that town. I've been there before. In fact right to the Good Knight's Rest. Its quite the lovely place. The name caught my eye and I went in, and well the rest is history."
"Well isn't that awfully convenient then. I believe you would know exactly where to go and exactly how to go."
"Oh I can in fact do you one better. Not only do I know of a good route into Crois-Rathaid, I am well versed in the kind of routes that would get on there undetected by the Nasty Air's guards."
"Well aren't you full of pleasant surprises that continue to confirm I did in fact make the right choice by picking you."
Arly found herself flushing slightly. " Okay you're starting to lay it on maybe a little too thick now don't you think?"
"Absolutely not. I speak my mind. You know I'm not one for flattery. Once again, that was more Aleta's thing."
Arly felt herself glow at that. "Well. Well. In that case. When do we leave?"
"First light at the very latest."
"Hmm I could get some supplies together fairly quickly, then just tell Alanna, Chorizo, Broad, Hank maybe Panam too and I'll be good to leave. Alanna and Hank will take good care of the gang while I'm over there. Soo... I could leave right as the moon rises honestly. The night would make for good cover too of me leaving."
"Do you think you'll be fit to do that? You've had a long day. I've been observing."
Arly shrugged. "I'll have to make camp and catch a few hours of sleep before daylight but I am good to set out. Functioning on low sleep is a skill I've had to pick up."
"Well as long as you're sure."
"I'm quite sure. Don't worry I will be taking a proper rest in a good spot before continuing on and properly into Aiteach.
"I can accept that."
Arly beamed. In that case, allow me to make those preparations I spoke of and we can be underway."
"Sounds great to me. I'll be quiet then until we're ready to leave. I must ponder on a few things to come.
Arly nodded."I can work with that."
There was no reply that time. Arly took a moment to just sit in and let it settle in again. Myrna. Myrna the Bold. The Myrna the Bold. The one she'd modelled herself after to some extent. The one she'd gotten the idea of a scythe from. She was in her head. Or in her. Or tied to her with soul string or whatever. She didn't know how spirits worked but she knew this was happening. Myrna was with her and together they would save Rudeigin.
She was up in a flash at that though, gathering herself, and already picking up the lockbox which she would have to entrust to Alanna in order to run the next few meetings until she could get back. She all but ran out, doing her best to contain her excitement. It was best that rumors of Sharlyn running around excitedly before skipping off into the sunset didn't spread by morning.
Arly kept her pathing efficient, quickly, ducking into the tunnel that was closest, which just so happened to be Hank's place. She knocked seven times on the door in their usual pattern.
"Yes Sharlyn?"
"Hank. I have to be at the Good Knight's Rest in a few days time. I'm leaving tonight. Urgent business opportunity based on Nasty Ass Air being sent out the window."
"Good for you lass. Suppose you want me to help Alanna out."
"Yes that would be lovely."
"Consider it done."
There was silence for a moment, until Arly turned to leave.
"Be safe out there," came Hank's voice gruff and quiet.
"You be safe too Hank," whispered Arly, before she was off to the next stop where Alanna and Rizo were likely now cooking up dinner.
Alanna and Rizo were out in their tiny little herb garden, plucking a leaf or two to put into a pot. Alanna looked up as Arly approached, smile breaking out on her face. Arly felt a twinge of guilt at the news she was about to break. Alanna would miss her.
"Alanna-"
"-you're early for dinner. We're so-"
Arly held up her hand, sighing a little heavily. Somehow she felt Myrna understood what she was feeling.
"Leaving behind loved ones to go to war is the hardest thing you can do. I. I will make no false promises on this. Its hard. It'll hurt. They'll be hurt."
Arly tried to nod in her mind. "So I've come to realize. This might be the first time I away from an unspecified time, but I've done this before. It never does get any easier."
"Too true that. Too true."
"Alanna I'm so sorry but I have to be gone about a week. Its an opportunity about Nasty Ass Air. I'll tell you as soon as I'm able. This is unprecedented stuff. I have to go. I came here to let you know to take over for a week."
Alanna, for her part, hid her disappointment well. Rizo wasn't so well versed in it, running into the house, quite possibly to cry. Arly didn't let herself thing too far down that path. That would only result in her not actually leaving.
"I understand Arly." Alanna was only two years older than Arly, practically Arly's elder sister, at this point but she was her rock in many ways. Alanna pulled her into a hug. "I'll take care of them. You be safe out there."
Arly hugged her back just as tight. "Thank you. It means a lot."
Alanna squeezed her once, before slowly pulling away. A small smile had returned to her face. "Of course Arly. I'm always here for you." She winked. "Maybe I'll be leader by the time you're back."
"Like hell you will," Arly smirked right back, the tension and the guilt momentarily at bay. After a bit of giggling they sobered up again.
"Be safe Arly. And you better come back to me. Or I'll find your spirit and kick your ass."
"Oh believe me I know," said Arly giving her best friend nay sister in all but blood a gentle kiss to the forehead before finally turning to leave.
"You two do remind me of Aleta and I"
Arly just nodded. "She is my sister."
There was silence again as Arly handed over the lockbox then made her way toward the night market set up on the outskirts of Uamhan. Her parents would be there. Along with Panam who helped tend to their stall.
She found it quickly enough, her mother coming around to give her a hug as she always did when Arly visited.
"Mama, Papa, Pan I have news of something big. Something that could fetch us the best wine west of the Nest."
"The best wine you say," Panam said, taking a step back, playing it up a bit, but also probably genuinely surprised.
Mama's hug became a little tighter. "Ahh its never easy to say goodbye to you. Not on journey's like this. Not on any journey. But you have to go."
Arly nodded, allowing herself to bury her face in her mother's neck for a moment, taking a moment of solace in the comfort.
"Thank you for understanding Mama. I'll be back right quick."
She nodded and pulled away, Papa also stepping in for a quick hug. With a final set of goodbyes and a wave to Panam, Arly set off again, heart heavier still. It didn't take long for her to gather her belongings. They were also neatly packed away into a small bag, ready to go at a moments notice. Picking them up from her little hidey hole, she quickly made her way to the little pass that would lead up to the mountains. From the mountain's she'd cross into Aiteach along their edge and then make her way to its border.
It was an easy route and she was soon at the guard post near Uamhan where they would watch for anyone leaving and make a note. It had been a good five years since a guard had any inkling of her passing however. At this time of night, it was so easy she wondered if Nasty Ass Air just didn't care ab care about Uamhan enough to up the number of guards.
Creeping through the few cacti on the side of the road, she stealthily made her way right up to the guard hut. A quick stone tossed along the road, naturally prompting the guards to go investigate, and she was off scot free, charging into the desert. By the time the guards would think to look up, she'd be long long gone, for even with the visibility that came with the desert the dust she kicked up and the darkness would obscure her completely.
Sharlyn the Dauntless was off on a mission. A familiar one, to save Rudeigin. Except this time she wasn't alone. Myrna the Bold was alongside her, the result of some probably long forgotten ancient magic. The twelve who'd done it once. And off she was to join perhaps the twelve who would repeat history.
