Camp NaNo July '24: Rapunzel Retelling

Background

Does anyone remember when I made this wall post? So uhhh yeah. Initially I started a short story written in the second person not long after posting that, then never finished it (oopsies) but the idea never really left my head. Then cue me going to college and doing a lot of shows with this one student theater group that does entirely student written stuff and catching the writing bug and really wanting to write my own show and already having someone willing to direct it when it does get written, leaving it up to me to actually write the dang thing. So here it goes!

Premise

I basically laid it out in the post BUT this play is going to focus on two expecting mothers who are then throw out of balance when one of their exes shows up and offers her assistance in prepping for the baby. After a tragedy at the end of the first act, the second act focuses on one of the mothers' journey to get her child back from the ex. It'll be a lot heavier than I'm used to writing but I am still hoping to incorporate some lighter comedic moments in places that don't feel too tonally incongruent.

Goals

Write two pages per day - since it's a script, that should be fairly manageable, and each page turns out to ~1 minute of the show, so by the end of the month, I'll have around an hour written!

Leave encouraging comments! I love the vibes of Camp NaNo and want to spread the love as much as I can. Plus everyone's projects just look so incredibly interesting.

Come up with a title. This is actually the hardest one.

Day 5

I've been slowly writing bits and pieces, though as I've started I'm realizing I think I need to do more research + planning so I've not been writing as much as I've been brainstorming/researching. Which is definitely helping! Prob won't meet my original goal, but I'm at least doing more with it than I was before the month started, so I'm glad.

I remember a long time ago reading a second person novel called Zel, and I remember feeling moved by it. So I am very much excited for this project and see how you put your twist into it.

Day 10

I learned something today! Turns out when I have fun writing it's, like, a lot easier to do. Who'd've thought? I kinda did a full 180 and changed up the plot a lot. Now it's much more of a dramedy with a heavy side of Silly Shenanigans and feels much more my brand. Moral of the story? Trying new things is good but there's probably a reason you've been doing the other stuff for so long.

Here's a snippet, since I feel like I'm talking about this project so much in the abstract that I need to provide concrete proof it actually does exist.
