Camp Nano July '24: Sips of Serendipity

I wrote a mini scene of Aisha working at the cafe. It's not very long, but it was at the top of my head.

I started writing the first page on my typewriter. It's super messy, but I think it showcases Aisha's and Britney's personalities quite well.

Sometimes having a premise and cool characters is all you need to get a story going! Usually if you start writing a conflict will create itself! Good luck with writing and characters, take it easy and I bet things will come to you!

I wrote Aisha's first nervous rambling, and now I understand why writers like to hurt their characters. It was so much fun, I had to force myself to cut it off. Also, I wrote my first favorite interaction between her and Britney.

"Hey, be careful with that," she cried. Britney paused, finger just hovering over the coffee machine. "We don't know what's wrong with it."

"Yes, we do," Britney said. "It blew up."

I wrote 3,005 words as of today, and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Most of it were random scenes that I really wanted to write about even though I'm nowhere near them chronologically. My first draft is much messier than they normally are, but since I'm using a typewriter, I can allow myself to make those grammatical errors.

Also, I made a new character! Her name is Viktoria (last name pending) and she's Aisha's boss in the cafe. I originally named her Mariah, but there's a scene where she's inspecting the cafe, and I kept picturing a Russian woman. So she's a Russian woman named Viktoria.

Wow. I can't believe this month has flown by so quickly. It's like it was yesterday when I created this thread to show my progress... and then I tapered off near the end. I didn't complete my writing goal, but in the back of my mind, I kind of knew I wouldn't. I was packing for college, and work was piling up, so this novel was put on the back burner.

I wanted to write this novel since April, and I don't plan to completely stop it. But I need to manage my time better and motivate myself to do it. Now that I am going to take a writing workshop this semester, I'll have accountability to continue my novel.

Thank you so much to everyone (@Carlito, @EllieMae, @goodolnoah, @Snoink, @Spearmint, @IcyFlame, @redcarnation, @Roxanne, and anyone else I may have missed) who commented kind words, encouragement, and positivity in my thread. Your support kept me from giving up. I'll see you all in November.
