Nicholas rested his arms on the counter, adjusting his glasses.
"Big day today?" Marie asked, returning with a massive chicken.
"In a sense."

Sadie hopped in her car and drove home, excited to enjoy their meal. And her husband.

Marie glanced at him. "You were in pretty bad shape yesterday."
"Was I." Nicholas returned the look with a small frown.
"Might wanna keep the drinking at home from now on; I heard from Cillian that the teacher there had to drive you back."
Nicholas grimaced. "Yes, I was told. Listen; how much do I owe you?"
"Fifteen dollars."
He pulled out his wallet and handed her the cash. "Keep the change."

(Poor guy)

Sadie turned on some music and started blasting it as she seared then baked the steaks, then baked some asparagus with butter and garlic and roasted potatoes. It was going to be delicious. She was excited.

(He's got it rough for sure)

"Thanks."
Nicholas took the bag with the chicken in it. "I'd your mother well?"
"She's alright." Marie shrugged. "Same old same old."
"Give her my well wishes, please."
"Sure."

(I mean he kind of brings it on himself lol but still)

Sadie had the music blasting over their home stereo system and was fully invested in her craft. She'd decided to make a pan of brownies, too. She was in the process of sprinkling chocolate chips across the top.

"OOPS! I DID IT AGAIN--"

She started as she heard a voice scream-singing right behind her along with the top hit that was all over the radios lately. Sadie whirled around, only to find that Meyer still was holding his duffle bag and had his backpack slung over one shoulder, but had plucked a cucumber off the counter to use as a microphone. He was doing his best Britney impersonation.

"I PLAYED WITH YOUR HEART--"

Her expression changed from alarmed to delighted in an instant and she started towards him eagerly. "GOT LOST IN THE GAME!"

She threw herself into him hard enough he stumbled backward and dropped his duffle bag, laughing and hugging her as tightly as she hugged him. "Hey babe, love you."

"Love youuuuuuu."

(Yeah a tiny bit)

(Awww Meyer is so cute)

"Bye."
"Bye."
Nicholas exited the shop and headed toward his car. He'd convinced the kids that he'd cook for them, and so he was. He had all the ingredients now, plus a full head of lettuce and a raging hangover, but he was feeling better than yesterday. He had control of his faculties, at least.
He couldn't remember much of what had happened yesterday, but Martin had confirmed that he'd been driven home by the young woman who wa sjust in the store. Sadie Lovett. Nicholas remembered seeing her around before; apparently she was a teacher at the school.

(hehe thanks! In canon he's a hitman (and Sadie doesn't know that for the first bit of the novel lol) but absolutely has golden retriever energy when he's off duty)

He hugged her for a long minute, then inhaled dramatically. "It smells like I died, went to heaven, fought god -- won -- established my own empire, got overthrown by the most beautiful goddess in the figment of anyone's imagination, then got treated to a meal cooked by her own hand."

Sadie laughed at that.

Meyer pulled away and took her hand in his own, looking at it earnestly. "What did you cook for me, madam goddess?"

"Aww!" Sadie laughed again and pulled her hand away, blushing. "You're a dork."

He grinned and looked up at her face with a playful twinkle in his eye. "Can't help your taste in men is shameful."

She rolled her eyes, still smiling. "Steak, asparagus, and potatoes."

"Fuck yes." He kissed her cheek. "Just when I thought coming home couldn't get any better, you go and shatter my expectations yet again. What a woman."

(Yikes!)

(He reminds me of Rocky from Lackadaisy right now)

(Or maybe I'm thinking of another character--it'll come to me)

(Also asparagus is like my favorite veggie)

He'd have to apologize later. Or maybe he'd just not acknowledge it. He'd gone this long without interacting with her, he'd be fine, right? Besides, he wanted to take this time to bond with Mary and Martin. God knew he'd been robbed of that after Victoria died.

(I'm not familiar)
(and it is pretty great! I always forget it exists, but enjoy it a lot when I eat it lol)

Sadie smiled and planted a kiss on his lips, then turned back towards the kitchen and walked over to check on the food in the oven. It was sizzling and smelled amazing.

"What are you gonna do with this?" Meyer held up the cucumber.

Sadie glanced back at him then lifted an eyebrow and smirked suggestively. "I mean... I had a few ideas..."

Meyer blinked, brain buffering for a second, then he grinned wickedly and started towards her. "I can help!" He wrapped his arms around her abdomen and picked her up, carrying her towards the living room.

She laughed, hitting his arms. "Put me down! I didn't buy steak to skip straight to dessert."

"Mmmm dessert--"

"Stahp!" she was laughing as she thrashed. "Go put your stuff away... then we'll eat... then--"

"Dessert?"

"We'll see."

He set her down and kissed her cheek again. "Fair." He bent and picked up his duffle bag. "Back in a jiff!"

(I can keep bantering but I've got nothing super pressing to get out there)

(Lackadaisy's an excellent webcomic about Prohibition-era speakeasies, but the characters are anthropomorphic cats (not in a furry way). It's ridiculously good.)

(I eat it whenever I can; it tastes so good. Especially with lemon chicken)

(Neither do I, just bitter reflections.)

(ooh nice!)

(did you have an idea for the next scene? Are you wanting to bring his kids in more? We could have them running into Sadie maybe? Inviting her to dinner as a thank you? I really dunno, just grasping. I feel like we didn't pick characters easy to get together lol)

(I agree; it's kinda tough. I wonder if we could brainstorm a supernatural element to throw in, or maybe discuss the prospect of the whole coal situation, but I think it would be great if Martin invited Sadie to dinner, especially since Nicholas has basically no memory of what he said to her and he'd be sober this time)

(I think that would be good, yeah ^^ brainstorming would be good. And I'd be down for a dinner for sure! It'd be delightfully awkward lol)

(Nice! I can set that up and then maybe we pm about the brainstorming.)

The next morning on Saturday, Martin was out shopping for dinner since he'd volunteered. His father had cooked a fine chicken; he'd enjoyed it a lot and so had Mary, though she was struggling to admit it. She'd never really gotten over her resentment of him. Martin hadn't either, to be fair, but he was good at hiding it and he knew that his dad was trying, at least. He supposed. It was hard to tell right now, since he'd turned up drunk the first night they were there. The church seemed to help boost his morale a little, which was good, but his aunt had warned them both they'd be disappointed by him.

akdsjfh you know that feeling where you start writing a scene but then you get bored with the scene so you move on and start writing a different scene and then you get bored with that scene so you move on to an entirely different WIP and then you get bored with that so you move on-
