“Mmmm.” She couldn’t really respond without nodding or moving her lips. Besides, it wasn’t her servant’s job to console her. She needed to stop being childish. Deal with this on her own.

She finished up her lips. "Right, I believe you're all finished, miss! How does it look?"

Rana took a deep breath and steeled herself not to react and then glanced into the mirror with a passive expression. She hated the way the look of the makeup made her feel. She could barely recognize herself. It was like the powder concealed any hint of depth of personality she might have otherwise. Head empty; no thoughts. Just like a good little Gowan girl was supposed to be. Not that she'd know how the heck she was supposed to act. It was like every single thing she did was a misstep. An added thorn to her father's flesh. No matter how hard she tried.
And yet she needed to pretend that the get-up didn't make her feel bad about herself. The servant had done an excellent job for the task she'd been given. Rana shouldn't take her own emotions out on a poor servant who had even less say in any of this than Rana had herself. She forced a smile, glancing back at the servant. "It looks wonderful; thank you very much."

She looked like an absolute fool. But Rana dipped her head, gracefully accepting the compliment. "...Do you happen to know what the meeting with the General is supposed to be about? Anything in particular I should prepare for?"
