About two weeks later, Sera felt comfortable moving Ky and Tadaaki to separate rooms. She had Ky put in a room on the fifth floor and Tadaaki on the third floor. She explained to them that their doors would be locked from the outside each night but that they would be free to roam with escorts during the day. Emery Rand was assigned to Ky and another young man was assigned to Tadaaki. Sera informed them that Lord Ash would be coming to interview them individually, but they ought to take time to get to know their escorts in the meantime.

Ky was anxious about the prospects of being on her own in this giant place either locked in like a prison or watched like a criminal. But. Well. There exactly nothing she could do about that.
But she hadn’t expected to get split up like this.
When she was with Aleth, she didn’t have the burden of having to make decisions for herself. She just had to obey. It added a layer of security.
When she was with Tadaaki, she felt safe, which was a worthy trade off for having to make the decisions.
But currently she felt neither safe nor secure. And yet she felt like social acceptability meant she had to ‘get to know’ this Emery Rand fellow. She took a moment to compose herself and take a deep breath, then pulled her door open and looked at him with a small smile.

Emery stood there in a long, warm coat with a broad smile on his face. "Hullo!" he said. "Ky, I presume?"

“Yes, sir.” Was she supposed to offer a hand to shake? She wasn’t sure. Aleth wasn’t here to copy. “Mr. Rand?”

“It’s nice to meet you.” Ky shook his hand firmly.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. "I heard you came in pretty beat."

“Better than I was,” Ky said, then awkwardly raised her arm that was still in the sling. “Not as well as I hope to be once again some day.”

"I'm sure you'll be right as rain in a couple weeks," he said sympathetically. "Has Sera been giving you enough to eat?"

“She hasn’t stopped shoving food at me since the moment I got here,” Ky said with a chuckle. “I’ll rival a horse within the month if it keeps up.”
Ignoring entirely the fact that she was still very, very thin. But she had gained several pounds already so she looked ever so slightly less emaciated.

"That sounds like her," he laughed. "She's very good at what she does. Are your friends alright as well?"

“…I hope so.” Ky dipped her head. “We’re kind of apart now, but they were on the mend when I left, so I’m sure they’re fine. Everyone here is very, very kind.”

"They are," he agreed happily. "What have you been doing to keep yourself occupied while locked up in the infirmary?"

“Not much.” Ky shrugged. “I’m fairly easily contented.”
That, and there were literally no other options than to stare at the wall. She wasn’t allowed to talk — by command of Aleth not anyone here — and she had to claim illiteracy so she couldn’t entertain herself with a book. So she did a lot of thinking through her cover story. And even more time telling herself stories to stay entertained.
