He ducked back under the blankets, shutting the book and holding it tightly.
"The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that." -Karis Nemik
Kivvien's eyes locked with a set of black inhuman eyes in the brush. His wand was out now in one hand, a bottle of iridescent oil in the other. He stepped in front of the cart just as the creature moved out from the brush. It was hideous, like a birdlike frog with flat black eyes that stared unblinking at Kivvien.
Hieronymus peeked through the slats once again, eyes wide as he saw what Kivvien was facing. It must be a demon.

Hieronymus flipped through the journal quickly to see if there were any spells, anything he could do to help.

The journal focused primarily on the uses for the carcass of a demon, with only a few notes about their behavior.
The demon leaped at Kivvien, who dashed out of the way. He hadn't finished his trapping spell, and the demon broke right through the incantation he had set so far.
Hieronymus cursed under his breath and climbed out to fetch the book Kivvien had put in his satchel, hoping he had left it on the seat of the cart.

Hieronymus stared at the singed robe for a moment, then started rooting through the satchel.

The demon leaped again, this time being caught in the air, the sigils latching onto its skin and holding it in place. Kivvien stooped to grab a stick and forced it into the beaklike mouth of the struggling creature. He prayed its mouth open and poured some of the oil into it.
The spell gave out and the demon dropped to the ground. It stumbled a few stepped, looking disoriented, then its legs gave out. Its chest shook with a final shuddering breath, and went still.
Hieronymus paused in his searching, awestruck. "You...did you kill it?" It certainly looked like he had.

"It's as dead as these things get," Kivvien confirmed. "Would you open that chest in the back there-" he gestured, "-there are some tools inside to preserve the carcass."
"Of course, of course, sir!" He scrambled back into the cart and opened the chest. "Which tools do you require?"

He got the gloves and oil with ease, but he struggled with the tarp.
