Sadie, despite her reluctance and defiance, was slowly starting to wake herself up. She was just so tired. Why in the world did the trials need to start this early? They didn’t, that’s why. This was just cruelty.

Alex took a deep breath, staring at themself in the mirror. Xe still has bags under their eyes and their ribs protruded from their skin. They hated it.
Xe quickly got dressed and walked out of the bathroom. "Alright, Sadie. It's time to get up."

Sadie mechanically rolled out of bed and grabbed her clothes, then trudged to the bathroom. She emerged three minutes later with an empty bladder, clean teeth, and questionably combed hair that she tied back into a ponytail. Her clothes were disheveled but on. And they still had four minutes to spare.

Alex followed them, making their way down to the lobby. Xe checked every visible clock on the way there, their heart pounding even louder with each second.

Sure enough, once they got there they ran into a group of people from the Trials. There were two huge guards, though different ones from the one they’d argued with last night. And wandering around in an aimless circle was Meyer. “Ah! There’s the little bundle of sunshine!”
“Go die,” Sadie muttered. She felt like she was literally dying. So, another typical early morning.
“Wakey wakey eggs and bakey,” Meyer taunted, striding towards them with a smirk. “Just kidding. The two of you ate enough last night to last you at least a week, don’t you think? So no need for breakfast…”

Emily looked up from her clipboard, her signature smile plastered on her face. “You’re both exactly 20.76 seconds late.” She set down her pen. “But don’t worry about that. You’re not perfect. Yet.”
Alex sighed, hunching into xemself. Maybe facing homeless was better than facing Emily expecting them to be on time down to the millisecond.
