"Probably multiple," Sadie muttered, closing her eyes. "I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of looking for them. The creeps can watch me as I sleep. See if I care."

"Same." Sadie was quiet for a few moments, breathing deeply in an attempt to calm herself. She was agitated. And embarrassed. She should have been smart enough to think of cameras before now. Of course they were monitoring her. How stupid could she be? But then a thought struck her and she cracked an eye open. "...are you still wearing your binder still? I don't think you're supposed to sleep in those."

Alex sighed. "You're right." Xe rolled off the bed and landed on the floor with a dull thump. "I'll go take it off." They stood up and walked into the bathroom.

Sadie nodded and settled back in the bed. Then thought better of it and scooted to the edge, pulling the blanket back welcomingly so they’d be able to crawl in easily when they got back if they wanted. No harm in sharing, right? She closed her eyes and turned over.

Alex returned a couple of minutes, smiling warmly, when they spotted the folded blanket. Then, without a word, xe slid back into bed, keeping their back towards Sadie's.

Sadie smiled a little, keeping her eyes closed. This seemed like the best case scenario. Now neither of them had to feel guilty about taking the bed. She tried to calm her mind so she’d be able to sleep. She needed to be well rested if she was going to survive tomorrows psychological grilling.

Alex fell asleep, subconsciously shuffling closer to Sadie.

Sadie stayed awake for a while longer trying to strategize but eventually drifted off as well.

The following day, the alarm clock started blaring at exactly 5:17 AM. Alex groaned, their eyes slowly blinking open.

Sadie woke with an f-bomb, sat up and angrily reached across Alex to grab the alarm clock, then yanked it out of the wall and yeeted it across the room. “Absolutely not,” she huffed, collapsing back onto the bed.

The phone started ringing. Though, not much a morning person, Sadie was clearly worse off, so Alex answered the phone. “Hello?”
“You have thirty minutes to get ready or you lose your place in the trials. Your time starts now.”
Alex slammed the phone down. “Sadie, we have thirty minutes to get ready or we’re out of the trials.”
