“I haven’t been able to afford it. Counseling is ridiculously expensive, even when it’s bad. The only cheap ones I’ve found are some bad Christian therapists, or web therapists that require better internet connection that I could ever have.” Alex shifted, tapping out a pattern on their thigh. “What about you? Dad hates me -- Mom that's okay with Dad hating me and treating me like a possession that he hates. It was no one's loss, really, when they tossed me out. They didn't do me much kindness while I was in their home, that's for sure."

Sadie nodded. She'd be happy to listen if Alex wanted to open up, but she wasn't going to pry. She certainly understood that sentiment, though. Nothing hurt quite as bad as the sting of having your own family toss you to the wolves. Worse, even, for them to be the wolves they were feeding you to. "At least we've got rooms waiting for us!
