“I liked Lyra’s story about the ravens,” Ky said. “It feels like an allegory… allegory? Is that the right word?”

"I think so." Anneliese shrugged. "It was very good. I hadn't heard that one before, I don't think. It was strange that she wanted to go first; she always goes last."

“Oh?” Ky said, looking at her curiously, wondering if there was a deeper meaning.

"She likes to think before she speaks," Anneliese said. "Seems like she's the only one in this family who does that. It was just weird today."

“That’s fair,” Ky said. “Maybe she’d already been telling herself this story for a while?”

"Maybe." Anneliese frowned. "She's even quieter since coming home. Mother and Father won't tell me much but I don't think the marriage went very well."

“Yeah…” Ky was quiet for a moment. Abuse tended to have that effect on people. She was actively trying do be talkative so that she matched the energy of the household. But it still made her so anxious to do that — even though she used to never shut up, when she was little. Being with Aleth had changed her. She didn’t doubt being with Tarr had done the same to Lyra. “I don’t envy her… but hopefully she’ll start to feel better, now that she’s back home.”

"Mother was so mad at Father for sending her away," she remembered. "I'd never seen them angry at each other before but she was furious. She wouldn't talk to him for a few days. None of us liked Lord Tarr before so I was just confused why Father would set up that betrothal. Why not marry her to Ewan Barraster instead? He's very nice; he gave me a bag of river stones once."

“That’s very kind of him,” Ky answered. “I’m sure he’ll lead the Barraster estate well, some day.”
It seemed like safer territory, to focus on Ewan rather than Tarr. Ky also didn’t understand it. It didn’t fit with who Loquitur seemed to be. Why would you send your own daughter off to a brute like Tarr? That seemed like an even bigger betrayal than what she’d gone through.

"I bet he will. His mothers are training hin every day, and so is his father. It always struck me as strange," she said suddenly, "that Lady Constance doesn't actually love Maxwell Eden, and he doesn't love her, but they had to make a child so House Barraster had an heir. It all seems very tedious to me."

“I agree,” Ky said. She also wasn’t sure how she was going to have biological children. She wanted to raise them with a wife, not a husband. “I suppose biology makes things difficult sometimes, when it doesn’t align with who you love.”

"I guess so. I don't even want children when I grow up. I want to go live down South and ride horses without a shirt on and get sunburned and kill slavers all day."

“Admirable goals,” Ky said with a nod. She wasn’t even sure how she felt about that. Slavers had — quite literally — ruined her entire life. And yet it made her want to curl into a little ball and hide away from them. It made her anxious to so much as think about being near one again — nevermind the thought of killing someone on top of it all. “You don’t have to get sunburned, though. Rubbing mud on you helps a lot… it just washes off when you go swimming.”
