Oh. :P

I was starting to get my suspicions that you might have killed him off, but I wasn't entirely sure - I thought you threw him in Clockwork Castle to develop him a little more for your overall story, but that makes a lot more sense. Megara did need a little push.

Would you be down for somehow slipping in that little idea I had? Maybe Skull can slip off - not to find Fidel, but because he can see Megara has other things on her plate.

That answered my question.

It just hadn't been in the way that Megara had probably intended.

Part of me had known that I might not see Fidel again - Megara didn't exactly have the nicest past time, and Fidel didn't really fit into her side of her world from what I had watched.

Hadn't fit into.

I had to make that correction. It hadn't entirely hit me yet, but I knew that the reason she was avoiding the question was because Fidel couldn't easily be found - maybe he was rotting in some forgotten street, or tucked underneath a grave in a decrepit graveyard.

I didn't know how I felt about that.

"What?" I teased, a feeling in my stomach I couldn't quite describe. "Are you afraid of me doing something stupid in the time it takes to get to the exit?"

Sure. I don't really have many other characters in position for him to interact with, just half-baked ideas and placeholders so far, so my apologies on that front. I could just write the setting and 'NPC' characters that Skull interracts with for a while. Either that or he runs into the 'revolution' of sorts that I have set up so Meg can have an army of her own to combat her dad, and also to de-thronw pretty much every polotician in her world, but that's a long story.

Like I said, I don't really have any solid characters in there yet, so inconsisancies and such are inevitable, but if you want to go that route I'm up for it.

"Yes," she responded bluntly.

Could she trust him to keep his head down if she left him alone?

Could she trust him. What kind of question was that? Of course she couldn't. He was an outsider, one that had threatened her. Repeatedly. He'd followed her before, who was to say he wouldn't get curious about something else? What was stopping him from walking right into the manor and nosing around?

She pushed those thoughts from her head and pretended not to know why.

It was funny, how her hands only felt bloody after the death of someone she didn't personally kill.

Okay! We could develop them if you want to, but we could also just say that Skull explored for a bit during the time he's not with Megara and leave it at that - it'll let us focus on Megara interacting with Nathaniel and Asmira.

Although him accidentally running into a revolution might be fun. :P

"I'm offended you don't trust me more," I joked. The feeling was still there in my stomach - nauseous, uncomfortable and a reminder that death eventually claimed everyone. I had gotten the feeling when I thought Lucy was going to die. When I had died. And, even further back, when I knew my parents had.

Yeah, that could work as well! Since I'm still working on the revolution and such, it might be best to stick to what we both know works, that being the characters we've written before. I'm writing a few questionably-canon short stories to develop the revolution and its leaders and such, so it's no real loss to me to keep them unincluded.

Would you like the newcomers to just run into Megara by coincidence, or do you have other circumstances in mind? Coincidence might be easier, but we could underline it with a location to increase probability? Say, one of those secret criminal-only parties Megara attends because she's a self-destructive little bean.

Or that could just bump into her on the street or something and get curious. Either way is perfectly fine.

"You've threatened me before," she reminded him, "and you followed me. Now you expect me to trust you?"

She suspected he was joking, but she didn't know how she was supposed to react if he was. Besides, if she assumed he was kidding and he wasn't, what then? She guessed she'd have to kill him, if only to strave off her own embarrassment.

They were outside now, chilly morning air joining forces with the fog from the lake to create the perfect atmosphere in which to contemplate murder over a cup of tea. Megara wished she had a cup of tea.

The secret criminal only parties would probably be a lot of fun - it could explain why Asmira would get so on edge, and would explain why the two together are being so secretive.

Plus, it has the added bonus of ]really throwing Megara off if she thinks Nathaniel's Skull.

I could see my breath in the air when I spoke again - it was chilly morning with an eerie fog. If I wasn't stuck on another world, I would have probably enjoyed how spooky and mysterious it came off as.

"You did let me sleep in your room and take some of your clothes," I pointed out. I paused, looked out into the fog, and then asked, "So am I free to roam your world now? I'm asking out of politeness, by the way - I could easily outrun if I decided to dash down the street."

Okay then, let's go with that! In case you need to write anything pertaining to the actual system by which they operate, I'll give you the absolute bare minimum of what you need to know because, well, I don't want to be writing exposition all day.

1) They are owned and operated by Haven Keepers, called, in this capacity, just club owners by the patrons, who are contractors, Bonded, or just regular low lifes with connections. (Bonded are assassins who work specifically for one of the three leaders of the group Meg works for. She's Bonded to the Count)

2) Poison is on the menu, written and disguised as a regular drink. It's to weed out anyone who isn't supposed to be there. They order the wrong drink, they die. It's not the only defense against interlopers, but it's the one you should probably know about before having your characters order any drinks or anything. (They're written like special drinks invented by the house and listed among the genuine drinks of that variety, so one would have to be told by a regular which ones were toxic).

3) They're literally underground, under hotels/inns that also serve as safe havens for the morally unsound. The inn won't look it, though. It'll look really high-end and such. How your characters, newcomers, could have ended up in there is a little bit of a complicated question. Either they followed someone suspicious looking (who was probably about to be permanently kicked out for looking suspicious) and BSed their way in from there, a difficult feat but a possible one. Or they just popped up in, say, a closet inside the club when they messed around with magic and haven't been able to leave (it's open 24/7)

"Me, maybe," she said, leaving the implications hanging in the air.

Silence.

She turned to him, "Stay out of trouble. You're flesh and blood now, I can put you in so much pain you won't even know if you're begging for mercy."

She might not have meant it, anymore. She wasn't sure. He was different now, or maybe just in a different mood. Or was she the one acting differently? Gods, she hoped not.

A closet sounds good to me! And thankfully Nathaniel and Asmira aren't really drinkers - they can easily avoid the poison. I could have them at the bar right next to each other whenever Megara comes, and Nathaniel could do the majority of the talking because Asmira's too overwhelmed.

(She's from King Solomon's time, so you can see why she'd be a little thrown off. :P)

Want to timeskip in your post?

All you need to know about Nathaniel and Asmira is that Nathaniel is in his late teens with short hair and a very mature face, and Asmira is in her early twenties. Nathaniel is a little bit more than pale, and Asmira has darker skin and long, dark brown hair.

Nathaniel has also been considered pretty attractive.

"I'd possess you before you could do that," I joked - a final jab before I started heading out into the fog. I'd find a way back to - well, whatever I was calling the world that wasn't my own.

Okie dokie!

Megara watched him go, sighed, and turned to walk in the other direction.

There was a Haven a few blocks down the road, after the buildings changed to show the class divide and with a much nicer view of the lake. She went there, warmer now that she was wearing something more practical than that gown and ready to get something to drink. Yes, she knew it was still early morning, but she didn't care. She was having a day that she would rather not be sober for.

She arrived inside the hotel, greeted the Haven Keep, and went down into the club.

The music was calming, the kind used for background rather than dancing, and the people were classy, all decked out in whatever extravagance their persona required.

She ignored them and sat down at the bar to order her first drink of the day.

Someone had sat down next to Nathaniel.

The temperature immediately dropped a degree. He sent a quick, warning look in Asmira's direction; they had to keep a low profile right now, and her using her powers wasn't going to help.

But he was nervous, too - the very tips of his fingers, currently hidden underneath the table, were going back and forth between shadow and human. They didn't know where they were, but both could tell there was something off. They were trying their best to fit in as they tried to figure out where they were and how to find Skull, but both were on edge thanks to the lack of information they had on the situation.

But he had spent years working in the government, so he was the one best suited to getting answers from the girl who had just sat down.

"Hello," he said.

A drink was placed in front of her just as the stranger beside her said hello. That was the first thing she noticed, he was a stranger. They didn't get newcomers here often, not ones who were strangers to her.

She took a sip of her drink and considered him.

"You new?" she asked. People couldn't just walk in here. If he was here, he had to have been let in by the Haven Keep. Or he snuck in somehow. She would never make the mistake of thinking such a thing impossible. Improbable, yes, but not impossible. Briar could probably do it.

He gave a nod just as the temperature dropped a little more.

"I am," he confirmed, resisting the urge to look at Asmira again - he didn't want the girl to realize Asmira was the one causing the temperature to change.

"Contractor?"

It was getting cold. She shivered and took another sip of her drink.

She'd ask him more challenging questions, let him dig his own grave. She wouldn't be the one to kill him. She was too tired for that. Anyone else here would do it for her at the flick of her wrist. Contractors didn't disobey the orders of the Bonded. Not if they wanted to keep breathing.

There was a pause.

"...Yes," he said, not entirely sure what a contractor was supposed to be. He knew that there were people who made contracts to work with the government, back in London - they did the kind of work that the spirits couldn't do.

But then the air suddenly dropped again - lights flickering a little - and Asmira took a very quiet sharp breath from beside him.

He took a sip of his drink and tried his best to not focus on Asmira's distress, because then he would start feeling distressed, too.

"My name is Nathaniel," he said, his tone polite and cool.

She froze. Blinked.

Coincidence.

Funny, she wasn't supposed to believe in those.

She chuckled, "You're the second person with that name I've met recently." She didn't offer her name, not yet. If he knew anything about the criminal underground of this city, he would recognize it, and if she used an alias here it would put everyone else here on guard.

"Oh?" he asked. The air was starting to get too cold. If people hadn't already noticed the change, they would soon.

Asmira and him both knew that the girl was trying to hint at something, but they didn't know what that something was. Why did it matter that someone else had that name?

"That's interesting," he said. Another sip of the drink - he tried to ignore the flickering lights in the background. "I've never met someone who shared my name."
