I think the former is better.

You are just random smithy guy coming along with the knights because you want to escape whatever you wanted to and one day, you saw a big interesting poster on a wall and that was some kind of what scarlett wrote here and you just thought the poster offer is really nice and joined our party because you are short on money and need to do some good-paid job that exactly like that poster is offering.

Or you just got transferred in my party because of no reason, (your former knight kicked you out maybe?).

I feel like it's better for Axel's character if he is knightless, and desperately trying to get someone - anyone - to take him on. It'd be a great character moment if he could prove himself worthy enough to one of the knights to be accepted.

Oh no I have a last name for him. I just sort of play off of the whole idea of being illegitimate. Way back when, if you were an illegitimate child then you might not have a surname.

Actually, they usually would have a surname. For example, in GRRM's books, each region has a surname specifically for bastards. Aka, illegitimate children. In TT, I imagine they would have a surname. Either their mother's (if she even has one) or one specific to an area. I imagine, in TT, that these would be names like "walker" or "smith" or "forest".
