The next day, the dog didn’t go down to the fields, he was sad and lonely and wanted to know his name. So he went to the stables and asked the horse again, “Harry, do you know my name? I don’t seem to remember.”
And the horse said, “Of course, I do, Darry you silly Dog.”

The dog ran away, he knew that wasn’t his name and he was sad.

He ran and he ran and he ran, all the way back to the farmhouse. And when he finally got there nobody noticed.”

The big copper cat looked at me and asked, “Do you remember my name?”

But I just shook my head and watched as he carried on, he sounded sad.

“He ran through the door and into the house where the farmer’s son was reading a book. The dog asked again, “Tom, do you know my name? I don’t seem to remember.”
And the boy said, “Of course, I do, David you silly Dog.”

The dog hurried away, he knew that wasn’t his name and he was sad.

The dog hurried out of the old farmhouse and started to cry. He cried and he cried and he cried until it was dark outside.

And when he stopped crying he stared up at the Moon and dreamed of chasing it like a bright red ball.”

But the little girl only shook her head and watched him blink his sad kitten eyes.

“The dog woke up the next morning in the field behind the barn. He sprinted to the pigpen and lapped up water from the trough. “Hello Peter,” he said to the old hog.
“Hello Dog, how’d you do?”

“Not too good. I’ve forgotten my name.”
“I have heard so, the old wife used to know, but I’m not too good with names. Ask the chicken.”

In a happy mood the dog went to the henhouse and asked his best friend, the chicken, “Chucky, do you know my name? I don’t seem to remember.”
But the chicken clucked and said, “Once a day I used to remind you in the hope you would remember it but those days seem so long ago. Dog, I no longer remember but when I would remind you we would go down to the pond and you would look at your reflection in the water.”

So they walked down to the pond together and stood under the willow tree. The dog looked down into the pond, but he didn’t see a dog. He saw a cat with a big furry tail. That was when he remembered a big house in the city and his lost toy mouse.”

The big copper cat looked at me and asked, “Do you remember my name?”

“Your name,” I said, “Your name is Jasper.”
And I remembered those poor little eyes that went away every time I rubbed his soft belly. So I rubbed his furry belly and watched his sad eyes go away.
