It's been a minute! Have a couple digital portraits!

Last year as I was talking trekkie things with my exceptionally nerdy coworker, he shared that he wants to commission an artist to paint a huge battle scene of starships from his favorite sci-fi franchises. He listed off like fifteen different series, and inside I was thinking, hah, good luck finding someone who'd be crazy enough to bring that to life for you.
uh, well.... Yeah, that crazy person ended up being me.
After finalizing a digital mockup, I bought a 30 x 40 inch canvas and pulled out the crate of oil paints. Here's a progress shot:
It took me SIX MONTHS to finish this puppy. I struggled with motivation a lot of the time because the project was a bit overwhelming and unlike anything I've ever tackled before. And there are still things about it I wished I spent more time on, like the Borg cube which I never quite got right. But here's the finished thing!

I'm proud of myself for accepting such a daunting project. I learned a lot from it, and all things considered I'm fairly happy with the final result! I varnished it so it's extra vibrant in person!

Holy Hannah, this is incredible!!! Oh my gosh, I thought it was great, and THEN I saw the detail shots and there's so so much detail! Props to you for taking on something so big :0

This was my first attempt at a technique that has become my absolute FAVORITE as of late. First, I draw everything in pencil, fairly detailed:
Next I spray it with sealant so it doesn't smudge. Then I start to layer watercolor on top!
Voila!
The paper in my sketchbook is not built for wet mediums but it is very hardy, so luckily it takes a LOT of layers for the paper to start to "pill." I just have to be careful because unlike watercolor paper it's not forgiving when it comes to blending colors on the paper or scrubbing out mistakes. Which is why the pencil-first layer is really helpful!
