i cut off my hair the october after i left you
to live with my lover in a new set of suburbs

after i got a cat who’d hiss and bite
at the touch of affection on his back

after the call where you said “i feel
like you’re confessing something to me”
as if you were god
as if hair is holy
as if i hadn’t already

and i sobbed like a baby
(your baby)
the night before i did it

and i thought of you
stroking my head
kissing my hair
telling me to never grow up
telling me to never change.

this one was hard for me to write. i'm not happy with it really but i can't sit with it too long or i trigger myself lol. but hey,,, i haven't been able to write ANYTHING about this for over three years so it's a start

2. remember

the air outside is crisp with
the dying breath of winter, we turn the heat up
and down with it

i take my cat into the
last gasps of sunlight after work and flinch back
when he hisses and slices his claws
like he doesn’t know who i am

the returning green and the
longer days should have a certain
hope to them but –

i am lying next to you on
the carpet back in my shitty college apartment
the tears sticking
my hair to my face

i am begging you to stay alive

and you just look back at me
as if you don’t know
who i am
