42 posts in this topic.

  1. (I want to watch Les Miserables, so forgive the title)

Mentors, post your profiles here! It will make it easier for the mentees-to-be, and that way we will all get to know each other along the way :3

    *
Here's mine. I copied it from the Buddy System topic in Welcome Mat, since nothing changed so far (except for the number of SBs, I changed that).

    *reporting to duty*

~ name: I've been called many names.. But just Aria will do.

    ~ age: 18

~ what you write: Novels. A series I'm very proud of, at the moment.
One may call it fantasy, but I tend not to follow the usual scheme for the genre. Also, Storybook chapters. And long sentences that sometimes don't quite have the normal word order.

~ what you review: Novel chapters, and even whole novels (over mail or such, we can agree), and shorter stories, all with at least a touch of something abnormal/fantasy. I take other types of fiction too, but I prefer these.

~ what you read: Same as above.. Plus some classics. I'm especially fond of finding new imaginative ways to solve old problems, and always appreciate that talent in writers.

~ your "specialty": Characters, so they've told me. The ones who sooner or later show their dark/crazy side, mostly.. And particularly the development of their minds and those little things and feelings that make a person seem real (they are not often in mercy with me, though)
I'd say that I'm pretty good in making the whole thing really complicated, too.. That I enjoy doing And lately, people seem to like my descriptions, but I hardly can call it a specialty.

~ what times you are online: I'm GMT+1, and my time online is really random. On Mondays, that could be around noon. And maybe again later in the evening (think, after nine). On Wednesdays, in the afternoon/evening. On other days, it depends on how often the teacher is in the room with me, or how long I sleep (weekends) xD

~ five random things about yourself:
    * I'm finishing my High, School of Applied Arts and Design. That explains the teacher part up there ^^
    * I have a lizard pet named Calypso (it's a she)
    * I love Victorian era, Steampunk and all that goes with it
    * I'm sarcastic, very much, and sometimes I'm a bit mean. But only with people whom I know that won't hurt (or in case I don't care, that works too)
    * When they tell you I'm crazy about Storybooks, do trust them. At the moment, I have 12 active POV characters, a few active but not with their own POVs, and two (or three) still waiting for the SBs to start x)

~ anything you'd prefer not to read: I don't know how to review poetry. I never wrote it, and so I have no idea what to say about them, and therefore it doesn't make much sense to send it to me to read. I don't write short stories either, but I know how to review prose, so that's fine. Surprisingly enough, I don't like science fiction all that much, unless it's really creative and has something new to offer from the very beginning. As for fan fiction, well, I only see the point if I don't know which work was the base. If I read the original book (or seen the movie), I can read it.

    Kind regards, see you ^_^

Oh, yes. Also I'm different in reviewing when I know the person and when I do it privately, than when the work is posted on the site and I come to say a word or two.

    Go on, people! :)
  2. name: Shadowlight, but any variation of that is fine. The most common is Shady.
age: 22 at the moment. I'm old.

what you write: I write historical fictoin, and fantasy with a twist.
what you review: I will review anything save Poetry- I have a disability where I cannot distinguish rhyming. I love reading it but not so good at writing or reviewing it.

what you read: Mostly old classics. I am an archaic styled writer so I LOVE anything old. I have some friends who say I only read things by authors who are dead.

your "specialty": I do not review on things such as spelling and punctuation, I personally believe those are not the meat of the story (if something is so blatantly obvious I will mention it, but only if it detracts from the readability of the story.) I review on content- what I mean is this. Do the characters live in the story? does the description take me to the scene? I review on characters, and overall flow of a piece.

what times you are online: I am in Eastern standard time. And am usually always on in the evenings after 7pm.

    five random things about yourself:
    1. I like rainy windy days better then sunny warm days.
    2. I have dyslexia but still love reading and writing.
    3. Whenever I have a bad dream I ALWAYS end up dying.
    4. Chocolate is brain food, and if they don't have it in Heaven I'm not going.
    5. I LOVE steampunk things

anything you'd prefer not to read: No slash fiction, as to anything else as I say to everything- I will try (read) anything once.
  3. name: Cas
    age: Sixteen.

what you write: Prose in various genres, mostly free verse poetry, and sometimes scripts.
what you review: I feel most comfortable reviewing prose, be it flash fiction, short stories, novellas, or novels. I can review poetry and scripts, but know I’m not exactly a master at either.

what you read: I attach myself more to authors than genres. Admittedly, I tend to read YA work, but I’ve read books like A Clockwork Orange (on my own time) and the epic poem “Beowulf”. I’m a fan of the authors Robin McKinley, C.S. Lewis, Llyod Alexander, Nancy Springer, D.J. MacHale, Holly Black, J.K Rowling, Scott Westerfeld, Kevin Brooks, N.M. Browne, Laurie Halse Anderson, Jonathan Swift, Jack London, David Clement-Davies, Suzanne Collins, Erin Hunter, and Cinda Williams Chima. And, well, probably a dozen or so other authors and a few books, but I don’t want to murder you with a long(er) list. Sometimes I read movie or TV scripts, though I’m not sure if that exactly counts as ‘published’.

your "specialty": My “specialty” is dialogue, but I’m also fair at description, grammar, punctuation, spotting cliches and tropes, and consistency. I’m admittedly pretty bad at writing action scenes.

what times you are online: I’m a Central peep with bad insomnia. So, I’m most often on in the afternoon until roughly midnight or later.

five random things about yourself: I’m an animal lover and former rescuer; I love riding horses, especially Arabians; I used to be a dancer; I can read/write/speak some German; and I’m a flaming asexual.

anything you'd prefer not to read: Romance. Well, I mean, I can manage it, but it’s generally my least favorite thing to read. Take note that I read fanfic, however. I don’t understand it either. It depends, but just understand coming to me with a sappy story starting with a meet-cute will probably make me respond like you tried to shove candyfloss down my throat. I won’t bite you or anything, though. I’ll just attempt sighing on my side of the Interwebs.
  4. *Gasp* Another Shady? Scandalous. :D

Name: Any variation of my name will due, really. I'll answer to a wide range of names...except for Vypekins. I don't answer to that. ;) However, Shady, Slim Shady, Vyper, and Vyp seem to be the most popular.

    age: 17

what you write: Fantasy/Action-adventure, both in my novel and short stories, and I'm beginning to dabble in poetry.

what you review: I prefer Fantasy, Fiction, and Sci-fi, but I will review romance if it's not descriptive. I will also review poetry, though I'm just a fledgling poet myself.

what you read: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, anything else by Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Inheritence Cycle, The Hunger Games Trilogy, The Ranger's Apprentice, and pretty much anything else that I think might be similar to these.

your "specialty": Grammar/usage, punctuation, and spelling are my strongest points. I am also good at action scenes, and creating 'rough' characters.

what times you are online: It varies alot. I tend to be on sometime between 6 and 11 PM EST during the week. The weekends are unpredictable, but don't expect to see me on before noon.

    five random things about yourself:
    1) I'm an athlete
    2) I know a lot about animals, especially fish, snakes, and cats.
    3) I am seemingly incapable of getting a new pet without researching their species.
    4) I live on a farm
    5) I am fluent in hillbilly, sarcasm, and English, know a bit of American Sign Language, and am learning Spanish.

anything you'd prefer not to read: Descriptive romance is an absolute no. Fan-fiction is only a yes if you ask nicely.
  5. name: Searria, Sea, O Ace One, whatever. ;)
    age: 18

what you write:Fantasy fiction, general fiction, and I dabble a bit in poetry
what you review:Pretty much any genres. I don't know how helpful I can be on Fanfics because I don't get out much, but I can always critique the actual writing.

what you read: I love fantasy fiction, medieval fiction, etc. Favourite authors include Lloyed Alexander, Jonathan Stroud, and Gerald Morris

your "specialty":Hmm...I don't know that I really have a "specialty." I'll pick out grammar mistakes and explain them if I can, and I know when wording sounds awkward, I guess.

what times you are online: During the summer, I'm pretty much on throughout the day from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. During the school year, I'm on less often, but can usually get on between 4 P.M. and 10 P.M. (CST)

    five random things about yourself:
    (1) I am obsessed with frogs! *ribbit*
    (2) I did not draw my avatar. That would be J. Haux, my sister
    (3) Expect a million emoticons in any reviews of mine. My favourite just so happens to be the dancing pink elephant.
    (4) I play cello and piano, and I sing
    (5) I got a 20% on a paper in second grade because I rushed through it to write.

anything you'd prefer not to read: I don't tend to read anything with excessive cussing, violence, horror, romance, and all that. I'll do Romance and Fanfic if I must, but I just can't promise I'll be very helpful. I don't have any experience with scripts, but I can look at those too if you want.
    -Sea-
  6. name: Rydia, Kitty, Kit, Heather, Kitty15, Sabre, Shopa, Pat Buchanan, Pulchra, Ry. I answer to a lot of names, even 'you over there' would suffice.

    5. I'm terrible at math. >_>

[i]Anything you'd perfer not to read:[/b] Again, sci-fi or history.

Though I don't write poetry I love reciting it for an audience.
I love watching cheesy movies if only to complain about how bad they are.

  10. Hello!

name: Carly. Carl. Car-Car. Carlito. Whatever.

    age: 20

what you write: Novels. I love YA and Romance. Sometimes short stories. Sometimes lyrics. Romance. So much love. I love love.

what you review: Basically anything. According to my Will Review for Food thread I like novels, short stories, lyrics, and romance. Always romance. I like some action/adventure in there too or just some general contemporary YA.

what you read: Textbooks and research articles (haha...I'm in college...) :) But for fun I like to read...you guessed it YA romance! (Shocker I'm sure) but I'll read just about anything.

your "specialty":I write really long reviews and nit-pick like crazy and give my overall impressions of what's working and what's not.

what times you are online:It's pretty random but I try to get on at least once a day.

    five random things about yourself:

  11. Name: GrantBlayfur, for now. Call me Grant, Garrett, or Kolth.

Age: 17 (just about there, anyway. :P )

What you write: Science fiction, adventure, comedy, dark, fantasy, and epic-length stories.

    What you review: Anything, honestly.

What you read: See the list of stuff that I write, up there? ^ Yeah, that's what I generally read as well.

Your "specialty": Catching errors, fixing plot holes, being really sarcastic and full of dry humor when I really shouldn't be.

What times you are online: Thanks to the wonders of technology, I'm always connected via my phone. If you send me a PM, I should get back to you in a few minutes. Otherwise I'm actually online generally after 6:00 PM Pacific time.

    Five random things about yourself:
    1) In case you can't tell, I'm a brony. I try not to be too in-your-face about it, though. Except for...y'know, all the time.
    2) I'm narcissistic. Horribly, horribly narcissistic. I'm great at everything I try to do. Except for, oddly enough, writing. I'm only pretty good at that.
    3) Jazz is the superior musical genre. All those who disagree will be disposed of in the most jazz-tastic way possible.
    4) Online, I'm a really nice guy. Go on, try and make me mad. I dare ya'. :3

Anything you'd prefer not to read: Most Romance (unless it has a HUGE Comedy tag attached). Straight-up Dark/Gore stories. Anything that you, the writer, have not already reviewed yourself twice.
  12. name: Spark! :) But really, call me anything but late for dinner! ;) (I know, terrible joke.)

    ~ age: 15

~ what you write: I write everything! Romance, Teenage Fiction, Fantasy... (The only genre I don't really touch is horror,) and then I write poetry, lyrics...

~ what you review: I most often review poetry, but sometimes people can convince me to review novels/short stories

    ~ what you read: Novels!

~ your "specialty": Hmmm... I would say my specialty is description, novel/short story wise, along with characters and making a heartbreaking story. (I'm a sucker for a not happy ending.) Poetry wise, I'm really good at editing and finding more interesting words to replace the duller ones there.

~ what times you are online: I'm Eastern Time, and I'm usually on in the mornings, a little in the afternoon and then late at night. But I'm never far away from my laptop, so if you need me, just shoot me a PM.

Anyway, I hope to help n00bs in any way I can, so drop me a line if you'd like to be my mentee!
  13. Name: Black (Though I don't mind being called Nether!)

What you read: Anything at all to tell the absolute truth.

Your 'Specialty': I'm 'pretty' good at writing fantasy, and as far as reviewing goes I'm good at most anything (When I have time) other than poetry, though I tend to pay a lot of attention to the plot and theme.

What time's I'm online: Really it's rather random. I'm six hours behind GST! I'm usually on on Wednesday and Monday afternoons (For me). I also usually have a bit of time on Tuesday's, Fridays, and Saturdays. . . . But it's pretty random overall.

    ~Black~
  14. Name: Aley
    Age: 22
What You Write: I love to write poetry and I've dabbled in short stories and novels. I try to keep sentence structure clean and easy to follow, but mainly I work on themes and plot development or characters. Within the poetry I typically focus on style, theme, and creativity. Word choice and structure are a big deal for me. In short stories and novels I like Fantasy, Adventure, Sci-fi, and Action. Romance isn't quite my thing although I won't diss it.

What You Review: I mainly review poetry. It's quicker for me to get into that mindset and with everything going on in life right now I don't have a lot of time to sit and really delve into a long novel. I do review short stories, prose, and other pieces sometimes too, but that's mainly when I am requested to do so. I'm willing to get into a novel right now if it is at the beginning and we can have discussions about it. I love to discuss novels more than review them.

What You Read: I read a lot of things but my favorite are poetry things. I am not a fan of romantic poetry. It tends to get on my nerves pretty quick when it's really sappy. I love poetry dealing with intense metaphors and similes, alliteration, syntax, and other structural things. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to that though.
When I'm reading short stories or novels I need something that's very interesting and posted in short bits due to the natural world. If you're working on beginning a novel I love to help set them up and work though the beginning stages of character development, plot, setting, themes, and syntax again.

Your "Specialty": I feel that I specialize in thematic poetry. Some styles are also things that I typically feel I'm pretty good at such as the villanelle.

What Time's You're Online: I'm on at a smattering of times but I'm always willing to help through PMs, reviews, wall posts, and other such things. Currently I'm mostly on during the week Monday Wednesday and Friday. If you need different times than that we can work something out to talk.

    Five Random Things About You:
    I'm in college
    I have fish
    I weave
    I paint
My first complete Novel was last NaNoWriMo and it needs editing still.

If you have any other questions then send me a PM or a Chat Message.

    -Aley

    Age: 14/15

What you write: Lots of poetry, fantasy, and some action/adventure.

What you review: I tend to review mostly poetry, though I do from time to time review novel chapters and short stories, even the occasional non-fiction piece.

What you read: A wide range of stuff, including poetry, fantasy, action/adventure, and sometimes Sci-Fi.

Your "Speciality": Poetry as a whole. For fiction, I'm not entirely sure though I tend to focus more on characters and plot than grammar and wording. Example fiction review.

Anything you'd prefer not to read: Slash, (excluding YWS fanfiction) fanfiction, horror, and thriller.

Hope to see you around. :D
