My Father

I will never be like you
Never do the things you do
Never make the choices you made
Never make the mistakes you made

I was just a little girl.
A girl who thought you were her world
Until one day you disappeared
You came back, but I still shed those tears

You came back to someone new.
I’m no longer the girl you thought you knew
I am not the child you still see in those eyes

I used to be glued to your side
But then you went away
It made that little girl's heart break
It made our bond break.

You try to pick up the pieces
You try to go back
But it cut too deep
The way you left
And the words you’ve said

I thought of you as Superman until that day
When you made that big mistake
All that magic faded away

I thought the moon was you.
Until the darkness overpowered the light
Showed that even Superman has his kryptonite

Because of you, I have trust issues
Feeling like everyone will disappear like you once did
Yes, you're back, and you're better than you were
But it still tore me apart
Ripped up my heart.

All those fights
All those words
Every single insult
Felt like a punch to the throat
Hurt me in ways I can’t describe
Talked about bettering our bond
Fixing our relationship
It’s all lies

You are now just my DNA
Someone who was involved in making me
We share a face
A last name
We will never be the same

I am a daughter
But I am nothing like my father.

Hey hey! Welcome to YWS and thanks for posting this emotionally raw and honest poem.

What I loved: the journey from childhood admiration to disappointment and emotional distance is well developed, structurally speaking.

Favourite bit: It's a tie between

I will never be like you
Never do the things you do
Never make the choices you made
Never make the mistakes you made
where the repetition makes a heavy sense of determination and hurt in that powerful absolute, and

Someone who was involved in making me

That mechanical line, the matter-of-factness, hits deep. It's like a jarring contrast between your DNA - which IS you - and that disconnect rising from the abandonment. Like your identity is your fathers, yet very much not at the same time.

The contrast between the father's return and the lasting damage caused by his absence adds depth to the poem.
And that ending is strong, because it's bringing the poem full circle and reinforcing that you're no longer your father. It hammers in the poem's purpose.

What could be changed? Well, i found the line 'I have trust issues' to be a bit too direct; it removes us from your poem's strong flow. You could try something like
How can I trust
How can I know
How can you be back
When you did this to me

which is more like your style in the rest of the poem?

Enjoyed reading this piece, it was very emotive.

Good night, keep writing x

Congratulations on posting your first poem on the site! This one is filled with lots of emotions of a relationship between a father and daughter, you've done a nice job exploring that pain from multiple aspects of the relationship and drawing out the reasons and descriptions of that separation. Hope to read more of your poetry soon!

Hi Zoe! Saw you in the green room and wanted to check out your work. :)

You came back, but I still shed those tears

You can't take things back once they have been let loose. No matter how many time you say sorry, the past cannot be reversed. This is such a powerful line that shows that perfectly!

You came back to someone new.
I’m no longer the girl you thought you knew

Yes! So much time missed, so many changes. They were the catalyst for plenty of that change too!

You are now just my DNA

This line is painfully true and verberates on multiple levels. On one level we can't escape them. They will always be a part of us, hidden in the very script that wrote us into being. On another level there is no connection, they are strangers save for the damage they created.

I am a daughter
But I am nothing like my father.

And thank goodness there is a choice. We can't choose the circumstance we are born into, but we can choose how we behave and act as events unfold.

This was a very introspective and heartfelt poem. I think it is something a lot of people can relate to (unfortunately). For some it may be their mother instead of their father. Either way it's a devastating thing to experience but you have transmuted it here into something beautiful. Great job!

This is a really poignant and sad poem. I like how the length of the stanzas changes throughout the poem, giving it a level of uncertainty that fits well with the theme. One thing I thought was that the Superman and Kryptonite (should have a capital K) imagery is nice, but it can feel a bit familiar. Maybe find something more obscure to compare the feeling to? There is also a lot of telling us how the speaker feels about this, rather than using language that shows us or evokes the feeling. For example, phrases like "I have trust issues" or "Hurt me in ways I can’t describe" explain the emotion rather than letting us feel it! The shift from childhood admiration of the father to being an adult and setting boundaries is the strongest part in the poem, in my opinion.

We share a face
A last name
We will never be the same

This is such strong imagery, and I can feel the emotion in these lines! I think you should lean more heavily into this idea in the previous stanzas.

I will never be like you
Never do the things you do
Never make the choices you made
Never make the mistakes you made

I love this opening stanza, though using made twice in the last two lines doesn't quite flow right with me. I think you could find something better to say here!

You came back to someone new.
I’m no longer the girl you thought you knew

This is such a beautifully sad line, and the rhyme gives it a quiet playfulness.

This poem is so vulnerable and sad, and I somehow relate to it because I have something kinda similar written in my notes. Apart from that, this poem shows how someone you once thought was perfect—the person you wanted to feel safe and comfortable with, the person who was basically your idol—can become the person you feel the most hurt by. Someone who gave you issues and changed the way you see love and trust. In a way, it really stings. The emotions in this poem feel very raw and genuine, and I think that’s what makes it hit so hard.
